Very good job breaking down different lines and why certain seemingly intuitive moves for a lower level player (like myself) won’t work at the higher level. Keep it up!

Useful hippo concept: "make sure that you are never outmanned in the center in terms of pawn structure." That, in addition to limiting the opponent's bishop on C4. I'll be collecting those ideas! Big thanks!

You want to get the NM title by playing the Hippo only, good luck to you. And its great to see that you are having a strong tourney. Keep it up. Do you plan to self-coach yourself to the NM title or will you get a coach to guide you along the way? Also, will you prepare different openings for the journey that awaits you after getting the NM title?
@TheChessGiant
@TheChessGiant 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrei! Ya I am planning to self coach until then. This last tournament I had a performance rating of around 2275 so hopefully I can get some more solid tournaments together and make a push for 2200. Once I hit 2200 we shall see. The Hippo has been very effective so far but there's other interesting options like the Czech Pirc from both sides or the Saragossa/Caro-Kann systems with only 1. c3 and 1. ...c6 no matter what the opponent plays. Once NM happens I may try to make a push for FM but we shall see. One step at a time :)

I used to play the French and the Berlin alot. I've started to use the Hippo in some of my games I like the Hippo more than those openings now, it's easier to get active peices and it's a more flexible opening.

Hey Jack, nice man! Ya the French and Berlin are both super solid openings for black. However, having the Hippo in your back pocket never hurts if you want to escape some theory and get those flexible Hippo positions you were talking about!

Thank you Joe! Ya it's interesting as I've had a KZbin channel for a long time nearly solely focused on opening theory. But, I haven't been playing just one opening like all of these primed up tournament players. So, I went with the Hippo and it got me some fun positions to work with!

@@TheChessGiant Do you the think the Hippo would be a good starting point to simply learn about strategy in general? If you are playing the Ruy Lopez or Sicillian, you are spending more time memorizing lines than learning chess.

When I think hippopotamus opening I instantly remember that Hikaru used it against Komodo the chesscom engine. So I figured it was too complicated for a beginner to look at.
@TheChessGiant
@TheChessGiant 2 жыл бұрын
For sure Walter. Ya it's a good opening against computers because they don't have concrete lines or variations to win material or get the opponent's king in trouble. However, I've found it is very effective at all levels of play. Learn the basic concepts, setup the Hippo, and you're off to the races.
