I was on /a/ when Katawa Shoujo launched. It was a big celebration with a massive sticky thread on the top of the board. It had a picture of Kenji surfing in the sky while "Tonight's The Night" was embedded in the thread on a loop. Fun times. The quality of the game itself varies per route of course. Unavoidable as each girl got a different writer working on them.

I really loved Katawa Shoujo. Probably the first thing that really got me into all things weeb and still the best romance story I've experienced. Weird to think it came out 10 years ago. I guess its about time I read it again.

Russian 4ch (it's called 2ch) actually has it's own visual novel called "Everlasting Summer" and it had quite a cult around it, so I tried it and liked it at first, but then it became noticeable that writing wasn't that good. Then I've seen that Everlasting Summer often been compaired to Katawa Shoujo, so I tried it and enjoyed the hell out of it, quite an enjoyable read

I genuinely adore Katawa Shoujo. It's incredibly mature and inoffensive, portraying the girls really well. It really hurt my heart doing Rin's route, as I finally found a character who acted and struggled like I did. It meant the world to me.

I am a VN dev, and Katawa Shoujo was the trigger for me wanting to create VNs when I first played it 10 years ago. I had no idea what VNs even were at the time. Little did I know it would influence my whole life.

I never even played the game but hearing the music, the tale of how it was made and then the burn victim girl smiling at the end is about to make me cry. I went and downloaded the game, I will likely not play it until I wish for more pain in my feels. But I will say that as an indie dev myself, hearing a story of a group of total strangers coming together to make a game, not give up and make a damn good, FREE, game is amazing. Truly an inspiring tale I wasn't expecting when I first clicked on this video.

Same here, it was my first VN on the account of it having an Android port, and in a way it kind of destroyed my view of other VNs because of its quality. Maybe i just chose poorly the other VNs back then but at this point, years later, i would rather keep it that way as Katawa Shoujo deserves it.

4chan convinced me of playing it, and it convinced me to try more VNs, sadly none of the ones I've seen are as good (Now, the eroges are pretty good tho, definitely recommend Kyonyuu/Funbag Fantasy if you're into big honkers)

This game helped me cope during a time I was diagnosed with a chronic illness. I'm glad it is being brought up again. It means a lot to me on an emotional level. You can still find love after losing a part of yourself.

I remember playing this as an edgy 14 year old and it destroying me. Just hearing the music again is making my stomach flip. Katawa Shoujo was the thing that pushed me over the edge to go full weeb and I never looked back. Need to play it again to see if Rin is still best girl.

Katawa Shoujo is legitimately one of the best visual novels ever made, with some of the most compelling and hardest hitting stories. AND it is completely free, so there is no reason not to play it.

I remember playing this game in 2014, it was the first visual novel I played and I spent hours playing it at dawn (it was the only time I could play it safely) and trying to unlock all cutscenes and endings. Great game and I highly recommend it.

the world of vn is complicated, you can only recomend a handful of them without looking like a degenerate weeb. katawa shojo would be one of them. maybe the house on fata morgana. and ofc steins gate, danganropa, etc

I remember playing thia back in 2016 and I was moved to tears just like clannad the only anime to make me cry. The music in katawa shoujo was the best part especially the ones that had piano in it which actually inspired me to learn the piano

You really should play this one, even if you aren't a weeb, as the story isn't even really about having smeggs with disabled girls. It's about people, living their lives the best they can with the cards they were dealt. There's even an option in the settings to, uh, disable the spicy scenes, so it's 100% safe for work. Genuinely heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking story for every girl. And I could be wrong, but even thematically the girls' disabilities are all symbolic of the struggles they face when you, the player character, enter their lives. The deaf girl thinks people don't listen to her, the blind girl is led around by her family, the legless girl wants to run from her past, etc. Definite recommend from me, for what little it's worth.

Definitely in my top 5 visual novel, and while it may not be the greatest piece of writing one can read it is still a one in a lifetime experience. Seriously, give it a try if anyone hadn't.

I'm also really grateful to Katawa Shoujo for getting more people, even to this day, interested in visual novels. It's an incredibly underrated medium with easily the most amazing stories I've ever seen in fiction, and it's so often overlooked or ignored. Katawa Shoujo is doing great work not just as its own work, but by expanding the community of the medium as a whole. If there is anyone, anyone at all who is new to visual novels and read Katawa Shoujo and wants to get into more visual novels, I would be more than glad to point you at some truly amazing ones, because there is so much greatness in this medium, and I want to share it with anyone who's eager to experience more great stories.

This one really hits, I remember all of this stuff when it was happening. Played the act I demo back in the days etc. I never really understood visual novels but it was fun seeing one made by english speaking fans. 4chan has lots of great accomplishments but this one was cool.

I played the game YEARS ago and it always stuck with me. The game is legit a masterpiece. You should check it out when you have time. (There is a PG-13 mode to for people uncomfortable with the adult content too so everyone can play it).

The VN also just became freeware basically and people been trying to HD upgrade it and make new mods for it to add more fan content. Already had some fan made routes from a couple years back.

Thought the name of the game sounded familiar, than I remembered which game it is and oh boy... All I say is those 4chan reactions to the game are all true 100%. I went into it out of morbid curiosity and by the end I was silent crying in my room (I didn't want to wake everyone else up) for what felt like hours, and I only played through 1 of the routes (it was actually the girl with no arms).

I remember those days on 4chan, they were great. I was there back when the first arc came out and for the longest time I had no hope that the full game would ever get made, despite me loving the demo. And then it did, and man, it was so good, the first visual novel I actually played for the story.

I love watching how much you were cringing. Don't worry about it, you don't have to be considerate about this stuff. Nevertheless, these games aren't purely for those that are relationship starved (though I have no doubt it is the case for decent percentage of the users) but because the stories in some of those visual novels are really amazing. So think about these things are more as an Interactive Novel rather than a "game".

Funny thing is, RAITA, the fella who made the OG concept art, got hired by FATE to make many servants, especially the infamous Minamoto no Raikou's super MILF Berserker servant, and the Animator Mike Inel became the infamous guy who made anime TAWOG and Zootopia

Yeah I'ma be honest, I've played a HELLUVA lot of hentai games, visual novels and... less reputable games. But none, not ONE of them has made me not want to jack off, and actually made me interested and deeply invested in the story like Katawa Shoujo did. Emi's was the first route I chose and I remember how it has actually, as one of the 4chaners said themself, made me cry and think of only her for at least a month. Does it sound cringe now that I type it out? Hell yeah. Am I ashamed? Hell no. Amazing game, amazing stories (every one of them), and an amazing, one in a lifetime team that got together to create such a gem.

I played many of those newgrounds dating sims WAY earlier than i should have (like i was 11-13 at the time) The game is SOOOO GOOD!!!! My love all the characters except for Shizune and Misha, but that is because of their personalities, they remind me of my stepmom (who I despise). Hanako, Rin and Emi are my favorites though (Lily is great too), and my favorite h scene from it is (MILD SPOILERS, IF YOU READ BEYOND HERE YOU WILL GET SPOILED FOR THE FUNNIEST MOMENT IN THE GAME!!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!) When you are having sex with Emi in her room then all of the sudden Rin walks in, moves over to Emi's window (which is right next to the bed you two are having sex on if I recall correctly) to get a better look at a cloud she saw from her room (which is across the hall from Emi's, and Rin is a painter), says hello and sorry for the intrusion while not giving a single fuck about the fact you and Emi are fucking were right in front of her and leaves, when I first saw/read that scene I laughed so hard I was crying and my chest hurt!!!!!!
