Bobby Bare was doing this number for a decade in the mid-80's, and his cracly growl is also a fine version.

I know this comment is old, and this version is incredible - but have you heard Charley Crocket's version? It's really wonderful and worth a listen.
@Cbcw76
@Cbcw76 26 күн бұрын
@@hereswhatsleft No, but you've got me searching for it. I heard Townes' version IN ?? late 80s ? and it was OLD then - ie, polished past ts lifespan FOR HIM and he was bored with playing and singing it. Proof? He did an almost double-time thru the last two verses in a "c'mon, c'mon, let's get this over with!" fashion. 'Tis the fate of a stage performer vs. his hit. TVZ has a few of those so he could spread a 40-minute 'show' among 3-4 hits and THEN do 'fills' with his more recent favorites.
@Cbcw76

@@hereswhatsleft By the way, "death of characters" songs intrigue me but I can't make lists - those seem too maudlin. But ALONE AGAIN NATURALLY always shocks me. David Wilcox's EYE OF THE HURRICANE is another that sorta needs a warning sticker. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXPKaqxmrrObgNE ...his live versions can be recommended as threats against guitarists, by the way - he is a TRICKY composer, using 1-2-3 string capos along with weirdo tunings. HE CHEATS to gain his most hypnotic gones. ha ha... that album of his is a great place to start - the whole thing is a treasure chest of gems.

I don't think I have ever seen or heard anyone sing or perform with as much genuine emotion as Nanci Griffith. She performed this song numerous times with Townes Van Zandt. It was painful for her to do this, but it was beautiful. Nanci, you were one of a kind; truly special.

I just had an urge to listen to Nancy Griffith so I KZbind and only now just found out she passed away last year. What a loss to beautiful music! RIP! I'm an Afro-Caribbean man in my mid-60s with a love for an eclectic range of music. I came to Nancy Griffith (Emmy Lou Harris and others) via Linda Ronstadt, through Eagles/Poco/Jackson Browne, etc., that Laurel Canyon sound ("Country-Rock") growing in the early 1970s. By the mid-80's with that sound being represented by only a few, I checked out 80's "New Country" as an option for awhile. Still love country from that era. Still loving JB! Linda, God Bless you!

I have always been a huge fan of Townes and his beautiful ballads, love songs anything he wrote, collected all his LIp's But, when I heard this version of Nancy's, I was Stunned that Anyone could sing another writers tune like this, She understands it. Only thing I can compare it with is Emmy Lou doing a Gram Parson song. Amazingly done.
