James Vincent was the first guitarist offered a full million dollar a year offer to join Chicago after Terry Kath passed. James was in a group called The Exceptions with Peter Cetera prior to Chicago and was signed to CBS/Caribou Records, owned by Jim Guercio who produced the Chicago records. Danny Seraphine had asked James to join the band, but he declined. There was heavy drug use in that band at that time and that was a major factor in his decision to pass. In 1986, James almost joined the band, but it didn't work out. That band with Bill Champlin and James in it would have been outstanding.

Peter said much the same thing…when Foster came in, the band was a mess of drinking and drugs, the songs they offered to Foster for consideration were junk, and Foster helped get the band back in shape again and modernized their sound. It ended up helping them strike gold for the second time and some of those 80s Chicago hits are now standards. If Foster and Champlin hadn’t come in, the band could have ended right then. Peter would have probably done well anyway.

It amazes me how long Bill lasted with CHICAGO in such a TOXIC environment. Lamm, Pankow, and Loughnane were so CONTROLLING and bitter !
