There are things I liked about it. It was interesting to see Dickie's story. Thank god they didn’t go with this. Not only would it ruin Junior’s character, it would make the events of the show make literally zero sense. What about all the Sunday dinners they had as a family? Why would Janice ever let Junior anywhere near her daughter and step children?
@philmangini1728
@philmangini1728 2 күн бұрын
Sadly you're wrong which is why this idea is so insidious. People bury things and move on. They hide the pain and truth for the sake of the wider family and do things you cant belive unless youce seen it like bringing kids to a known abuser. The fact that janice had a cordial relationship is not out of character at all for a victim. And as far as junior telling richie about a light wallet or tony about a gas stove left on is also in keeping. For one if this idea were true janice would feel rage and try to hurt or kill junior without any suspicion falling on her whatsoever. It also makes sense that junior wpuld piss in the ear of anyone she may choose to confide in. We also easily forget about tonys second sister. Both sisters vanish around early adulthood? This subplot is abhorrent and meanspirited but the subtext is there. Uncle Junior has always been a piece of #!$@ Again the idea is repulsive. And hollywood may be tryung to normalize it but it mightve had a hidden value. People think of predators like theyre darth vader, obviously evil. But they arent. Abuse can be both subtle and hidden in plain sight.
@theroyalwraith
@theroyalwraith 2 күн бұрын
@ Don’t get me wrong, Junior is a POS. But I don’t think he would stoop to that. Although it’s not exactly analogous, he seemed genuinely outraged when he found out his tailor’s kid grandson died. I don’t think he would have gone out of his way to have the guy responsible dealt with if the protection of children weren’t a genuine conviction of his. He’s no doubt an evil man, but I think he had some lines he wouldn’t cross. As for Janice and Barb leaving home, I think Livia and Johnny Boy were more than enough reason to get away. Maybe I could believe another character would overlook something like that, but Janice? She killed Ritchie the moment he hit her. She plays the victim constantly throughout the show, and much like the rest of her family launches into rage or hysterics at the drop of the hat. I don’t think she’d stay silent in the one instance where she’d be wholly justified in speaking up. All in all I just don’t see it. It just seems like a way to make Junior out to be more evil, which is just kind of unnecessary.
@BigMuff520

@@shivahuggins1276this is exactly how it goes. ESP back then. I’m about the age Janice would be and when I was a kid, if you got molested and spoke up, you got in trouble for it and if you kept your mouth shut and pretended it never happened, maybe someone would buy you a nice dinner or something you really wanted. Then kids learn they have to accept their abusers. Abusers as well tend to convince the kids what they are doing is because they’re special and dress it up as special attention and adoration. It more often comes with gifts and adoration rather than force and verbal abuse. I was a clinician in a women’s shelter for years. Heard this story over and over every day. As a clinician who has worked with the abused and abusers as well, Junior strikes me as the type.

I'm starting to think that David Chase is some kind of self-hating Italian. He changed his surname, portrayed Italians as Gavones, especially in The Many Saints of Newark. And I saw that 2 part interview with David Chase that HBO released a few weeks ago. In it Chase even talks about incest going on in Italian families. His words were something to the extant of "These men from Southern Italy could really have their demons" or something like that.

One of the things I dont like about the movie is how much worse it made alot of the show characters. Yes they were bad guys but most of them had some kind of redeemable qualities and were relatable. Johnny Boy in the show was shown as charismatic and Junior was still pretty intelligent and had wisdom despite his insecurities. In the movie, Johnny Boy is just a grumpy asshole and Junior is already senile in his 30's. The writers probably don't like that there's fans who supposedly idolize these characters but at the same time being likeable and charming is literally part of what they do.

The story says she completely repressed it to the point that it took hallucinogenic drugs for her to unintentionally remember. If the story had remained, then it's likely she would've repressed them again, after her talk with Dickie, as it could be explained that she was still under the influence of the drugs when she told him. Also, childhood abuse is not as easy to overcome, as you make it seem. I'm no psychiatrist, but that much is easy to understand. There's a difference between experiencing abuse as a helpless child who can't begin to fathom why something like that is happening vs. experiencing abuse as an adult who can understand things like that.

@TheHarbingerofAutism Who said anything about overcoming the trauma? It's her psychological makeup that made Janice pull out a weapon. I'm saying within the framework that Janice, as a character, is depicted in the show, it is hard to believe she would let Junior live happily in front of her face. If not, with her own hands, she would have gotten someone to do it. It would be hard for me to reconcile that idea with Janice from the show. Also, repression is not, as matter of fact, an idea in psychology like it is in TV shows and movies. To add double repression (full repression again after recovering the memory) is a dubious prospect.

Chase wanted to redeem the Janice character by inserting psychological trauma into her childhood, he chose Junior because he was unmarried without kids and wasn't shown to be a ladies man and had those glasses. Cutting this was a good decision not just because it feels like out-of-nowhere shock value, but also because what happened in the finished cut not only feels so much like what Junior would do, but it was the ONE part of the movie that felt true to the spirit of The Sopranos. Junior has Dickie whacked for nothing more than a slight against his ego. I think Chase wanted to redeem Livia and Janice in the film. And that's fine as an idea, they were presented too much like one-dimensional villains on the show. And both of their behavior could actually be the result of trauma. But if THAT was route he wanted to take, he should've introduced a whole new character as the molester. Maybe Livia's father and Janice's grandfather (it would explain Janice's and Livia's complex relationship as well to have them be bonded by this shared trauma). But NOT completely destroy an already established and generally well-liked character. That's the worst idea I've ever heard. Plus, none of Janice's and Junior's interactions on the show would make any sense if this were true.
