Just to clear things up, tannins are not toxic to fish. Bettas, tetras, discus, angels, and shrimp thrive in acidic, tannic water.
@TheCineScaper2 жыл бұрын
Yes I know that tannins are good. I don't know exactly what comes out of this wood, but the smell wasn't very good either. I find alder cones and catappa leaf much safer.
@emihayashi77252 жыл бұрын
Are backyard pinecones safe? How often do you re- landscape the terrarium? Annually? Biannually? Triannually? My beta lived 4 yrs (after purchase) in a filled 5 gal tank, is it sufficient? Your 10 gal tank appears to contain less than half capacity of water.
@austinpoland41412 жыл бұрын
@@emihayashi7725 no because they have sapp in them most likely, pine of anything isnt good for aquariums. Alder cones are different then pinecones

Shrimp do not prefer acidic water, they do best in higher pH with more minerals than tannins in the water.
@serefine9272 жыл бұрын
Some info: the brown water leaking from the wood are the same tannin as from the catappa leaves. It is completely safe and the smell you mentioned in another comment is just the normal smell of the wood, not pleasant but not toxic at all. Next time you can do like 3 water changes to keep the tannin and to remove the wood smell or as you mentioned just boil it. Amazing scape otherwise !

Thanks!

Soo true. Took a little time for my water to reach it's normal color again from the wood tannin. "But, learning it was safe, was "definitely a 😌 relief.

For anyone who sees the moss ball and wants to get one: make sure you either get them from a reputable seller or *thoroughly* check yours for zebra mussels, an extremely invasive and damaging species that have been spotting in moss balls a lot lately.

@@mallorys2793 I’m not sure about Canada’s status on them because of the Zebra muscles, but they’ll likely be widely unavailable until the Russia Ukraine conflict is solved and Ukraine is able to resume its exportation of them. They were the major exporter of the plant. Japan has classified them as a protected species, thus limiting or even banning exporting them on a wide scale. From what I hear a lot of their’s sold in LFS’s are imported from Ukraine. I hope we get them back soon, they’re such a great plant.

I really do love the tank, looks amazing; only thing I would say is that corydoras do prefer a fine sand due to them sifting through it to find food, as a result some can cut themselves on gravel and that obviously leaves them open to infection. It is a smooth gravel so not the worst thing, but I just wanted to let you know

I still love the wood scape that hangs over edge into tank and doesn’t even touch the substrate…easy to lift if needed but nothing contaminating the gravel/substrate. Amazing video, i was vibing to the music which was really relaxing 😌 love the color orange on your backlght which is a mellow touch, honestly though when you were acclimating your fish, and you poured the corys in, i would not mix any of the water from the bag the corys were in or your snail bc that most definitely cross contaminates your water, it can sadly introduce a disease or something funky from your lfs, i usually just use a shrimp net or if they are big enough i grab them and slowly release them into the tank, whatever your method is, thats your choice but highly recommend never pouring water from the bag the fish are in, into the tank, a few years back i did that into my fluval flex 15 right, about a hundred dollars of cpd's dwarf emeralds, sparkling gouramis and they were so nice and chunky and i loved them, so one day i bought a tiny female rocket killifish, she was so small, like a cm long, super suspect but i just poured her out with the water in the bag she came in, bc she was so small, had a bad feeling about it at my lfs... but bought her anyway.... and low and behold a few days later, little red worm hanging out her butt, and that was camellanus worms, infected all my nano fish and killed them in 2wks...it was so prolific you have to treat the water column and there food with fenbendazole, and once its in one of your tanks, its probably in your other tanks, like extremely freaking bad parasite, it was a nightmare, the worm litterly killed my fish bc i poured her and her disease into my tank, i then had to bleach it out, lost everything and all my plants also it was a bummer 😕
