I've recently had a client come back to me saying that their architect told them to keep looking and keep looking and keep looking and you will eventually get someone to do the job dirt cheap so just reflecting on that I blame the Architects on some of the jobs and I find it really frustrating. I personally the last few years put in the boot when it comes into the price, if they want to pay it they want to pay it if they don't they don't. Over here in the Republic of Ireland it's very hard for a foreigner to get into the trade or at least be a "registered electrical contractor" which leads to a lot of foreigners doing illegal works. @13:25 - nothing is protecting those cables other than the electronics and fuses down stream. If you think on it, it does make sense but you’re correct in highlighting the fact you can wire it incorrectly and in theory have a whole install load coming back with full current through those crimped cables at the incomer switch. I always go for split boards, 100ma RCB, no more than a total combined load of ~40A on each side peak. Allowing for sine spikes inside of 100ms but otherwise rate each half for 40, so 80 total. That’s based on a 100A supply. But I get what you mean by asking what protects those since you are correct, it just means a lot of faults (infact every fault) would need to ALMOST happen simultaneously for it to be a factor. Otherwise you have MCB, then fuse to load and in fault condition a 100ms RCD. So those supply leads ain’t ever getting close to their rating. That’s how I see the logic anyway.
@andrewbrown19133 жыл бұрын
I'm sure the supply to the spd is fine been off the main switch as long as the length is under a certain length and fault protection is only required.

+CJR ELECTRICAL I think the 100mA TD RCD is still desirable as it stops everything 'earthed/bonded' becoming live in the event of a 30mA RCD failure, i.e. a backup RCD facility, even though not required by any means. What about when somebody comes to fit an EV-changing-point ? They usually want MCB non-rcd SWA submain ... though I guess for a TT supply you could use a type-A RCBO and a downstream 'simple' charger (not anderson/zappi/etc)!..

@John Smith I'm not assuming that someone who quotes cheaper will do an inferior job. In fact, it is perhaps likely that the cheaper quoter may do an identical or even better job. The market is elastic. It is a basic mathematical principle of supply and demand. My example was also anecdotal, from personal experience. I just don't like being put into a dutch auction; particularity when I have done all of the initial and on-going consultation, drawing up plans and pricing on materials only for the customer to pass on my intellectual property and my time expended to another business. It's insulating, particularly when the same customer asks me to re-attend to put dangerous and shoddy workmanship right.

In my day as a part time Electrician (self employed ) UK 2008 I charged £130 a day here in Thailand now 2021 I have done electrical work for friends for £50 a day done a couple of New house wiring to U.K. standards or as close as I could get to it. Working in this heat is very hard work. At £50 a day I’m expensive Thai Electrics is shocking very bad.

That is not much above local rates none of whom are qualified at all. I use a PEA/EGAT Electriction his rates are considerably higher than yours, over 3 times. He is as you can see from his day job a real electriction and working in the Udon Thani area. His prices are worth paying as he understands the details of the job. I make furniture and will not sell for anything less than my time is worth, so I don’t sell anything, luckily I don’t need to.

I thought the leaflet only omitted 221's as hadn't been updated. Also, the sections at the end of the box fit 222 and although 221's go in there they are not a neat fit. However, I have used those boxes with 221's. I have another query... why do they have cable tie slots? If it's not accessible and they are a tight fit (and they are a VERY tight fit) then why would you tie them?
@jayosullivan47565 жыл бұрын
Probably so you need a tool to gain accesses to them just so they can’t just be opened if that makes sense

Richard Walsh you see I’ve just had a look and can’t see that it states that a cable tie must be used to maintain the MF I assumed it was down to the connectors used like 773-222.

@@nw5835 Yes thanks and apparently you should use these to stop any vibration (yes, vibration) that may work the connectors loose. If you use the inserts there is no vibration and so they are certified MF. Cable ties not needed for MF. I cant see the cables I have put in vibrating but I may get the inserts! Money for the boys methinks.

Interesting point about not using Wago 221's in their boxes. I'm wondering are Wago trying to move away from the 221 to the 222 and 773 because of their ability to handle prolonged overload temperatures. Either way, thanks for pointing it out.

What's wrong with using 20A rated connectors on a 32a ring? Don't need 32a connectors unless it's a 32a radial.
@dkeable39705 жыл бұрын
interesting, I see your point but its not uncommon to find that a 32a ring is in fact 2 x 32a radials where someone's left a loose connection somewhere. So the 32a connectors are certainly needed to allow for this common potential fault.
@mattthompson86575 жыл бұрын
@@dkeable3970 By that logic we should be using 4 or 6mm cable for ring circuits so the cable is rated for 32a

The 6mm Tri Rated Cable feeding the SPD is protected by the 100 amp main breaker this is ok as it is such a short cable and is contained in a metal enclosure same as a bus bar system the cables also have a protective sleeve for extra mechanical and insulation protection Hagar would of had it approved to be ok

That is a fair price man. Here in US I'd charge almost double that but of course in US Dollars. There are always some cheap clients that want quality job for cheap price. They can't have a cake and eat it too. I recently bid on a job for a guy and after I gave him the quote, he liked it but he wanted to do some of the work himself. One of those know enough to be dangerous kinds. He wasted my time so I reciprocated and in the end told him can't do it due to liability. I also charge double those clients who hire fly by nights that run away without competing the job, and clients that are wannabe sparky and want me to fix their fuck ups...

Hi Chris great channel 👍 I make the price £1650 but I’m putting in a 3core swa assuming they have pme ? Was your reasons for not importing the earth down to cost or tripping problems (just curious) ?? Also yes I noticed maintenance free wago’s in them self made boxes only ? Plus I only use the 24amp ones on ring mains purely down to the fact you only need to protect the cable not the overload device and 2.5t/e as you know (roughly speaking) is rated at about 20amps ? Keep the good work up you seem like a good spark ⚡️

I live in rented accom..and I tell you what, I wish the landlord contracted pro's like you. Before I moved here, this place had suffered a poor conversion from commercial use to domestic dwelling, with no planning permission for the loft extension - so you can imagine the kinds of contractors the landlord sends here. Watching your channel is like a breath of fresh air - you're every bit a pro. The last contractor (I won't call him a sparky) the landlord sent here was fitting a pendant light when he actually fried himself and tripped all the switches on the board - this was *after* he refused my offer to use my touch-tester, and a multimeter. "It's ok", he said, "I already got one" *bang*. He used my test equipment after that. He hadn't isolated at the board - he'd flipped the wrong fuse in there. He was halfway through the job when the landlord called him away to do some pointing outside instead. Yup - pointing. When he ran out, I didn't realise it at the time but he'd left my ladders up in the middle of the room, and he'd left all the live wires dangling from the ceiling. Worse, he'd left the switch hanging out the wall - live. LOL..he even took the screws with him. I found this out a couple of hours later when I was groping blind for the light switch in the pitch dark, and found myself groping at the exposed back of the switchplate. It was pure luck I didn't get a jolt. Yeah, next day I banned the contractor from the house and told him the landlord was taking advantage of him, and then I freaked at the landlord - esp being as the landlord didn't even get it sorted when I tried to contact him straight after. I'm not at all confident about house electrics, but because the kid had actually took the screws too, I had to cannibalise some screws before I could fix the plate to the wall with a torch in my mouth, and after isolating the whole house at the board because the light breaker didn't actually isolate the lights. I've called environmental health, and am contacting trading standards over it, and because of the complete lack of fire safety here. This place is a death-trap. What with all the other issues uncovered here lately, I haven't slept a wink in weeks. The landlord's got the same kid doing the electrics in a couple of properties he's 'renovating'. Scary.

Hey CJR, I been watching you for a while now and lately I have had a question in my mind... Suppose you have to hang a ceiling light that's not too heavy but heavy enough for you not to be able to hold it and do the connections at the same time. what do you do? is there always a person that needs to hold it up for you or is there a stand/jig/tripod in the electrical industry that can be used to hold it up for you to get the connections done and then install it? many have suggested let it hang with just the eart connected but that's not really a solution or use a wire hanger not really a proper solution either. seems kind of crazy but I cannot seem to find anything online with just a quick search. Currently studying the 2365 and 18 edition so I try to workout different scenarios in my head if I was to ever face them. any input and thought or solution will be much appreciated. all the best with you daily work. regards

You need to rest it on the ladder young man. Or if it's really heavy get yourself a buddy to give you a hand while you make connections, it's really as simple as that. Happy training 👍
