Earlier this year some chap posted in a Facebook group that his neighbour's shower switch kept burning out. He posted that in a mainly German group and everyone was quite confused but eventually we got a clear picture. That neighbour lived in Georgia (the former Soviet republic, not the US state) and the local "electrician" had apparently spent some time working in the UK. That explained the shower pull cord and the old-colour T&E but it didn't explain the burnt neutral. The fact that the genius had used 2.5 T&E did though! Instead of owning up he just kept replacing the switches! In the end the neighbour managed to find the only properly qualified electrician in the entire region and the mess was fixed.

Huge improvement to what was a disaster area. When it comes to a one off installation, people dont seem to understand the enormous risk they are taking to lives and property by employing non professional operators, especially where contact with water is concerned. By employing low cost, substandard equipment and materials, are endangering themselves and facilitating the destruction of their property through fire hazards. Job well done !!

Sorry but square plate shower pull switches are a nightmare. Where people want a pull cord, either new work or a replacement, I use a Crabtree 2167. They're made to fix solidly to the joist with big screws and have lovely radiused cable entries. You make the connections after the switch is secured. The neon is in the cover, nice for meggering. Never had a comeback with them.

Love the work Chris, although I still find it unsettling having a live feed into a shower, you just don't see it in Australia (at least these days). Usually tank hot water feeding the whole house, gas or electric. But people aren't dropping dead everyday taking showers over there and they look pretty well made, just the shocking (pardon the pun) installation that lets them down.

We have been using electric showers in the U.K for years, I should think by now they would have been banned if they were dangerous. A lot of properties in the Uk don't have water tanks these days for hot water, mine was taken out over 15 years ago. the one problem with electric showers is that they rely on the amount of water going through to get the heat, so more water means a cooler shower, less water means a hotter shower, but there is no feeling to the water as it hits your body if you know what I mean.

Running your 10sq through a 40A/50A contractor from the board solves all this. Then 1.5 twin brown or multi core if you want a neon from contractor to standard 10A switch or 20A double pole with neon. Best way to wire these showers to avoid this.

Another fab video Chris, and more to the point a Rolls Royce job to replace a death trap. Truly shocked (pardon the pun) that even the most idiotic of fools would think it OK to shove a terminal block in a wall likely to be wet on that. Worst I ever saw was back in the late 1980's (yes I'm that old!) when I found an oven wired in 4.0mm to a 5a MK Logic lightswitch for an "isolator" at one end and a taped joint of the 4mm onto some ancient red and black single insulated singles (possibly old meter tails) jammed straight into a Henley block under the meter. Not even via the consumer unit main switch, let alone any over current protection. some people eh?! Keep up the good work.

Do they use any juice on standby with just the neon power light lit. I like the idea of the contactor at the DB and a twin 1.5 switching circuit... Incidently. One point you missed (as do many others) ..... You need to contact the Electric Board for the area! The Cutout is missing a crutch plate and you have single insulated cable on the live. It probably has a 400A fuse covering it at the substation so the results of a short there are significant! One phone call telling them there is a new cutout needed as it is an A07 (code for live exposed metalwork) and you are Golden. As an added Brucie Bonus the new cutout is a freebie! ;0)

Also you can’t lose certificates as they are on the cloud. Is it really worthwhile to do live to neutral IR tests. The 18th edition NIC certificate now only lists live to earth and live to live now. In fact if a circuit is RCD protected then you are going to get decent IR readings anyway.

If the next job has had a CU fitted by another spark, why is he getting a different spark to do the shower job? It would be in the back of my mind that either the spark who fitted the CU was no good, or there is a issue with the customer. Either way I would be warry of the next shower job. Stay well.

The problem with most of these type of jobs is there is nothing to stop an unqualified person doing what they think is a good job. i.e. twisting 2 earth wires together. It is really up to the government to have a similar scheme like gas safe for electrical work. I am aware that unqualified people are not allowed to run cables but I bet that doesn't stop them. At least Chris saved a life.

I'm new to the channel, the cable should be one piece end to end no joins etc and I'm not an electrician.
