I think Nancy doesn't like her family, not because it's normal, but because it has the appearance of normality but it's hollow inside--her dad supports them financially, but he's an emotional deadbeat. Her mom tries her darnedest to connect with her children, but when there's such disconnection between the parents, the kids can't trust or truly connect themselves.
@Skychaser33
@Skychaser33 5 ай бұрын
I feel bad for her mom, because it seems like she's had Nancy while being pretty young herself, so it's not like there in a huge age difference- she's trying to connect with her daughter because not too long ago she was in her shoes.
@melanie62954

@maxdorseyofficial I agree partially. I was born in the '80s to a large family, but I'm younger than these characters would have been. It's true that parents didn't keep tabs on their kids and we ran all over without supervision, but the majority of two-parent households I knew were more like Lucas's or family, where the parents actually cared about their kids. Ted isn't much better than Lonnie in that regard. The Wheelers are a broken family that just lives in the same home.
@chriskuhlmann3240
@chriskuhlmann3240 5 ай бұрын
The Wheeler family truly is a broken family, but I feel they all have separate reasons why. I really feel like Karen marrying Ted was a true mistake. They don't show any affection or true love for each other and they have separate thoughts and opinions about things. If I'm being really honest, their marriage reminds me a lot George and Lorraine at the beginning of Back to the Future. Those two characters had absolutely no love for each other and they NEVER filed for divorce. I think the reason why though is because they were afraid of how that would've affected Marty and his siblings. I however believe that shouldn't matter in general. If a married couple doesn't love each other, they should immediately file for divorce. No matter how that would affect their children, they should really decide what's best for themselves. As for Karen and Ted's children, they're not really broken, they're just a bit troubled. Mike gets constantly bullied because he and his friends are nerds and his peers just don't understand that being a nerd is actually a good thing. As for Nancy, she's not really nerdy, she just has a small social group. Before the whole "Barb incident", Nancy didn't have any other friends and she kind of felt ashamed of that. I feel like the main reason why she was interested in dating Steve is because she wanted to become popular in hopes that she would feel more proud of herself and more comfortable in her life. Let me just speak for myself, being popular is actually a BAD THING. Most popular kids turn out to be people who are F-BAGS and they think only for themselves. Throughout my entire life in school, I only had a couple of friends and was never really social with others. I was always the shy awkward nerd and I was actually okay with that. I was never bullied or anything because I was practically invisible, but I was more or less the outcast growing up. Still, I was okay with that. If you ever think about being popular, please take my advice and DON'T. You'll come to realize that being popular actually doesn't have a good effect in life and it likely never will.

One of my favorite things is that Hopper is actually good at his job. Unlike the trope of the stereotypical cop character who never takes anything seriously, he has actual detective skills and he puts them to good use.

@@l.vlogs26 In fact, Hop started to worry about Will's disappearance when he saw something strange was happening, and not just because he was Joyce's son. When Joyce first asked Hop for help, he wasn't worried at all because nothing usually happened in Hawkings (he said it himself). But when Hop discovered something else was going on, he went for it. Of course he understands the feeling of losing a child, but he didn't put effort into the case just because it was Joyce's son who went missing. He would do this for anyone.

I just talked about that trope the other day. The other example that person brought up was stupidly Egon Tiedemann in DARK, which is also not a stupid cop. I still do not understand why some audience members do not understand why he notes down "Why not forest road?" for an upcoming interrogation when it is known that the missing child has gone missing in the forest and he wants to question a guy who usually drives home through the forest but "coincidentally-not-coincidentally" didn't on the day that kid disappeared.

@juliant I don't understand how people dumb his perspective down to acting out for no reason. If you rewatch the first few episodes and skip over the Benny's Diner scenes, you have no reason to trust El. It's those scenes that paint her as the victim and establish the people who are after her as the villains. But Lucas does not know anything about that. Mike also knows only the gesture El used to back down her "bad men" statement.

39:30 it's also near impossible for children to discuss recent trauma. The brain functions to shield the victim from more pain. Personally, I didn't start remembering my trauma until early adulthood. That doesn't mean I didn't display behavior typical for an abused child but many people didn't or don't know what that behavior is or means. I think people should give Lucas a break this season. Will's missing, everyone's losing it. Lucas just deals with it in a different way. Then Eleven shows up saying where he is but not wanting them to go there (I don't blame her btw, it's for the best and those are just facts). I don't really blame Lucas for his reaction in that scene. He only wants to find Will safe
@TrentRidley

That's right, and from his perspective, with the knowledge he currently has, this stranger has come along to somewhat take the focus off of finding Will and now he has caught her actively sabotaging their attempts to find their friend. It's completely understandable that he is angry, untrusting of El, and refusing to cooperate with Mike's plan to first find El before resuming their search for Will.

@@TrentRidley But he knew El was the one who helped them figure out that Will was alive and where he actually was. She was the key to the whole mystery but she was obviously frightened of something. I know a lot of people defend Lucas here but I don't think his anxiety over Will justifies his behaviour towards El. With all his yelling and hostility, he was only making it harder for El to tell them everything whereas Mike was able to get her to help them by treating her like a human being. Lucas does go on to be one of my favorites later on, but definitely not in this season. I'm going to side with the kid who was forced to confront the demagorgon and raised like a lab experiment over the one who's angry about a newcomer in the group.

@@mansishukla6779 But you don't have to side with anyone at all. That's the benefit of being the audience, that you have the complete picture and can understand everyone's perspective. Lucas is siding with Will over El because he doesn't have the complete picture, its his limitation of being inside the story and being 11 years old and going through all of this stuff. Basically, people can be in pain and cause each other pain without it being anyone's fault, and even if its not obvious to them, it should be obvious to us, that's the whole point of having multiple viewpoints in a story.

If this show came out a decade earlier, we'd be on season 5 before Jonathan talked to Nancy about what she saw, and then season seven before they got to talk to his mom about it but for some wild reason like she randomly decided to take a vow of silence or god knows what other overly-dramatic BS they'd come up with 😅😅

I hadn't noticed it until now, but I find the parallels between Nancy and Jonathan's actions in the first episode probably made her accept Jonathan's reasons more quickly - everyone was so focused on Nancy's motives for what she was doing, sleeping with Steve, when people were missing the real point, of Barb being missing. She looked past what Jonathan did because he was the link to her real goal of finding Barb, and it helped her accept his reasons far easier because he was more focused on finding the truth too.

I think Nancy is so forgiving to Jonathan about the photos because she knows he wasn't trying to be creepy about it. She knows Jonathan. Even before all of this happened she was acquainted with him, therefore she knows he's harmless and he there was nothing untoward meant by him when he took the photo. She even understood why he prefers to photograph people rather than to commune with them. And I think when he told her that he liked photography because he preferred to observe people rather than talk to them... that was him telling her that he didn't take the picture in some creepy manner, but just as an artistic observation. And Nancy understood that.

@changedmynamebcyallwouldnt.. 5 ай бұрын
ehh, i disagree. i think nancy is so forgiving to jonathan because the writers messed up his character by making him seen creepy so they had to make him seem less creepy by making nancy forgive and understand him. in real life no woman would understand a man taking that kind of pictures of them because “theyre aquitances so she knows he’s harmless”, NO man is harmless to us if they’re not paralysed as they have a biological advantage to us because of their size and strenght. nancy understanding that it’s just art for him becomes more believable when jonathan explains himself (though no woman would understand that in real life), but that’s much later and nancy was written like she understands way before that. so yeah i really do believe it’s just the writers messing up his character and then trying to fix him. i understand that you could use that argument any time someone is talking about a character, but i believe it’s a valid argument only when almost no actual human would behave that way in their circumstances. i don’t think we should give an explanation for a characters actions when no real person in their situation would do what they did because that means the writers messed up so explaining their actions would automatically cause us to misunderstand their character. i think it’s better just to say that the writers messed up, taking pictures like that is off character for jonathan and understanding the explanation the writers came up with to backpedal his character is unrealistic for nancy. my theory that the writers made nancy forgive him to backpedal might very well be incorrect, maybe they really did want to showcase how jonathan is an outcast who prefers to observe people rather than talk to them which is why they wrote that scene, but in that case too i dont think it’s valuable to explain why nancy understood that because 1: she was still made to understand it so he doesn’t seem creepy and 2: no real woman would do that

While this entire series is gold, I think the writing for the separate storylines is strongest this first season. You're right; every group is investigating the mystery of what happened to Will (and Barb), but they are all coming at it from different angles, and that's what makes the show brilliant this first season. You've got Joyce trying to communicate with Will directly; Hop genuinely working a missing persons case, stumbling on to a science lab conspiracy, and ending up looking for Eleven; Nancy and Jonathan monster hunting; and the kids investigating alternate dimensions with a girl with psychic powers. It's great.

And when his cop buddy came looking for him he said he was calling his name a bunch but he didn't hear him. You ask the reason why Joyce could see Will in the wall. Joyce could see Will through the wall because El was using her powers at the exact same time locate and transmit Will's speech through the radio. To make this possible El weakened the barrier between the Upside Down and the real world which produced the temporary membrane like window through which Joyce and Will were speaking. This required a huge amount of effort from El which was why she could only sustain it for short while and why you see the wall healing as El becomes exhausted and collapses. I don't think I will spoil anything by saying that as the season progresses we learn little by little about the full extent of El's powers. In Episode 4 you are only half way through the reveal.

You're already suspicious of her, but then you discover she has powers that you only first experience when she violently slams a door closed twice, and then locks it, preventing you from leaving. All whilst glaring at you with a bloody nose saying one word... NO! The next time you experience her power is when she throws you 10ft and slams you into something solid knocking you unconscious... oh and this is after she interferes with your mission to find your friend. Now you tell me, without the perspective the show gives us as the audience, if you think his animosity towards her is totally unwarranted. Its not just a protective thing for his friendship circle... he actually thinks 11 had something to do with Will's disapperance. I think i might have a few choice names for a person i thought was involved in one of my friends disappearing as well... though they'd be a lot less savory..😂

A lot of the cast of Stranger Things are also musicians, including Joe Keery who goes by the stage name Djo. Finn Wolfhard is (was?) in a band as was Charlie Heaton. Gaten Mattarazzo has appeared on Broadway. I think he's currently in a show. There are several others including those that join the cast later on.

On your question on how kids can be so unempathetic over a death: In my high school a student died over a weekend helping his dad with his tree trimming business. The tree branch that was being cut fell on him. That Monday, a kid thinking he was being "funny" wore a homemade white t-shirt with a tree and a stick figure being hit by a falling branch. He walked through the halls between classes yelling "timber" the entire time. Let's just say he made it as far as lunch time before the entire cafeteria descended on him because he was doing it in the room. The teachers couldn't keep the kids off of him. They'd pull some off and the others would swarm right in the spots that were just opened until one of the teachers managed to grab him and pull him out of the room. He left with multiple broken ribs, a broken jaw that they had to wire shut to heal, a broken nose, a broken arm, a broken leg, and had to be suspended for his own safety for the rest of the school year. Do I understand it? Absolutely not. However, there are really really dumb and unempathetic kids out there.

There are some serious issues with those bullies the fact Troy was willing to go that far to force Mike to jump and kill himself. It's one thing when they were laughing at the gym when everyone was talking about Will's passing. But this is a whole other level of bully. That kids home life needs to be investigated immediately. There is something very wrong with him. NO kid is that driven to harm someone unless their getting abused at home and they take it out on others in school to make themselves feel tough, because deep down there weak. So, they picked on others to make themselves feel better. Ah, Jerks.

15:36 So in "real life" (if you believe in these things), areas where the supernatural can cross over to our world are kind of fluid and the veil can weaken in some areas sometimes, which is what can lead to ghosts appearing in certain areas, etc. So this would just be a patch that weakened a bit, but not enough to fully cross over.

“R rated” in the 80’s was … “R rated”. What they didn’t have before Indiana Jones was “PG-13”. Everything was G, PG, or R. Earlier we saw Joyce offering to take Will to Poltergeist (rated R). The Horror genre was all the rage at the time so that’s more the insinuation. And I know this comment isn’t likely to be seen but while Johnathan was 100% in the wrong to take those pics, he wasn’t wrong with his “that’s one way to put it” comment. Consider the whole scene when the redhead ousted the pictures. She didn’t tell Nancy (the most vulnerable person). Clearly Nancy’s privacy was the most invaded of the bunch, but Steve had no issue letting Tommy see the inappropriate pic. Nancy was the last person in the group to be informed… and then her opinions on the matter were essentially dismissed. No thought was given to her agency-they all behaved like she was Steve’s property.

Just FYI, whilst I don't think it's coming from a bad place.... in fact I think it comes from a genuine affection you have for Dustin's character.... I would refrain from continuing to repeat Dustin's lisp as it can come off as mocking and could make anyone watching your vid's that has a lisp even more self-conscious of it than they likely already are.

When EL goes into her "trance", she is NOT in the upside down, she's in a void in between the real world and the upside down. It wasn't until EL touched the creature in the void, got scared and opened the gate from the real world into the upside down that gave it the ability to cross over into the real world.

When Nancy crawled through that tree, that’s the most unrealistic thing I have ever seen in my entire entire life. Nobody and I mean, NOBODY would ever crawl through something quite like that knowing the kind of threat that’s out there and what’s behind that rift.

Lucas is a well-to-do suburban black kid in rural, white Indiana (a state with more cornfields than cities) in the height of Ronald Reagan's racist war on drugs (where minorities were overwhelmingly unjustly targeted and hard drugs were even distributed into minority neighborhoods to destabilize them to prove the war on drugs was real) and barely a decade after the Civil Rights Movement ended. His dad most likely was drafted to Vietnam where he likely faced plenty more racism despite serving his country all the same, and now lives in a very nice house on a culdesac with other well-to-do white conservatives. Lucas is in a tough place at a tough year to be an upper middle class black kid. So it makes sense he's the more agitated and reactionary member of the party.

hopper and Joyce carry this show on their back. Everyone is great but imo David Harbour and Winona Ryder are insanely talented actors and the fact they got them both and they act along side each other for most of it is just pure genius. This is very compelling to me because i love a mother love trumping all. She knew automatically THAT WAS NOT HER SON. and i love her ever second for it.
