i binged the first 2 seasons of stranger things and loved it, then my mother and sister where looking for something to watch and i knew this was right up there ally. i told them that i loved steve and that he was my favorite character, they both thought there was something from with me as they hadn't seen seen all of the first season yet and they hated him. a week later they finished season 2 and they also fell in love with him.

There's something about the first season that is just satisfying and endlessly rewatchable. The little details you pick up on rewatches, the subtle bits of characterization, the mystery, the buildup to the reveals, the teamwork, etc. Even when I already know where it's leading up to, I still get thrills and chills. This was Netflix at its peak.

@@bhelliom3 Agreed, the characterizations in seasons 1 and 2 are the strongest. Season 3 went off the rails for me--a few good points, but largely a disgusting mess. Season 4 was a fantastic return to form, but it's still big and sprawling, without the intimacy of the first 2 seasons.

i think part of the problem is s1 has so much mystery behind it. Who is eleven. Where did she come from. where is will. is he dead? did he run away? did the monster get him? what is the monster? how did it get here? like yk there’s just endless questions about the in universe things that mostly get answered within season 1. Then that’s the problem leading into s2. You can’t do a similar mystery style as s1 because we already know about the upside down. Automatically this show is going to be diminishing returns because they can’t replicate the excitement. I think s2 and S4 did a good job at attempting that but still didn’t hit the peaks of 1. I also think s3 is awesome. It’s very stylised and corny compared to the other seasons. It’s intentionally moving away from reality and basically saying “yeah our characters know they’re cool” and tbh i think it works for that season because s4 goes back to form. just all in i do agree with you but at the same time i think the show is consistently great and the reason S1 is so amazing is the concepts were so well thought out

Would you believe that Steve wasn't going to survive this season? He was supposed to be a one-off jerk boyfriend that would eventually have been killed off in the finale-- The Duffers loved Joe Keery's portrayal of the character and liked working with him so they decided to not only give Steve a redemption arc but sign him up for the rest of the series.

That yelling scene between Joyce and Jonathan reminds me of a time that my mom yelled at me. Probably the most angry and panicked telling off she ever did towards me. I used to love nighttime walks because it would clear my head. I lived in a very safe area so usually it was 9 or 10. This time in particular, I decided to go out and walk at like midnight and didn't come home until past 1. My mom was waiting outside for me because she heard me leaving and didn't know whether I'd gone out for a crazy late walk or if I'd been kidnapped from bed by an intruder. She'd been standing outside for that hour, terrified, torn as to whether to call the police. Oh boy did she let me have it. Of course, it came from a place of love and I felt absolutely awful for bringing about the emotions that brought on her freak out at me. After that, I made sure to be home by 9:30, not because I was afraid of nighttime walks or wanted to avoid punishment, but because I never wanted to make my mom feel that way again.

The actor who plays Dustin, Gaten Matarazzo, has CCD in real life. The dental issue affecting his teeth. The lisp isn't meant to be funny, even though maybe it is sometimes. 🤷‍♂️ It's something the actor struggles with through the series. At least for seasons 1-3. I just thought I'd mention that. I'm so glad you got hooked!! This really is a fantastic show! Especially the first 3 seasons. 💯 Season 4 was drastically affected by Covid, but it's still well done!

My thoughts exactly. I've watched Oscar/The Cocoa Couch for a long time and don't believe the intention is to be impolite about it. That isn't really in his character. To be mean in that kind of way. But, you're right, it isn't a great look. I attempted to point it out delicately so, at the very least, he's aware of how it's coming across when he does it. I'm guilty of being on the "YAY APPRECIATION OF STEVE'S EVOLUTION" train but I'm a big fan of Lucas, and I wouldn't call it character growth per se. Steve started out misguided and shallow, but I believe Lucas was ALWAYS a good person with his head on straight. He was being mean about this strange girl that Mike was getting irrationally attached to, but BECAUSE they had a missing friend whose life was in danger. (Let's ditch the weirdo... and get back to looking for Will. She's a traitor... because she's making it harder for us to find Will.) But he would never put his friends in danger even if it meant getting rid of her (warning them the bad men were coming), and I love that the moment he decides to accept Eleven as a friend he's 100% in on her too (shouting for a bunch of gun-toting secret agents to eat shit, lol). He's hard to like if you don't see where he's coming from and you support Eleven, but if you can look past "he's mean to Eleven" and see why, he was never not a sweet kid and a good friend.

Steve+Nancy+Jonathan are just such a perfect trio! They all balance each other out, are capable of calling each other out where they need it, but also supporting each other how they need too. I love that the camera was a gift from Steve and Nancy, and Jonathan was the one who grabbed Steve's hand to drag him away from the monster the first go-around. And obviously Nancy's chemistry with the two of them. I ship Stoncy (their triad ship name) so hard 😭♥

Fun* bit of trivia: If you watch closely you can see hopper wearing a blue bracelet all season. He also wears it at 38:17 in the flashback. And at 39:08 in the present time at the hospital. But like i said he is wearing it all season. Now if you look at 24:31 in hoppers daughters hair you can see she is wearing blue hair ties. That is the bracelet that he is wearing all season. When his daugther looses her hair, he puts it on and he does not take it off again. I love little details in costume design like that. * And by fun i mean heartbreaking ofcourse

Cannot WAIT for you to watch season two. I love all the seasons, but s2 has a special place in my heart. It has some of the most heartfelt moments, phenomenal acting and great writing. There is one episode that we’ve all collectively decided is pretty meh, and sadly I feel a lot of people judge the season as a whole based on just one episode that wasn’t as good as the other seven. Also the BEST and most unexpected friendship of the entire show is about to kick off in s2, and you’re gonna love it :D i’m hyped!

season one is utterly freaking perfect. it needs to be a media hall of fame. so heartfelt and funny and touching and scary and yeah, pretty much every available emotion? it's there. i was six years old in fall 1983, so the kids would be about six or seven years older than me, and i relate to just about everything they go through. and i, like most others, couldn't stand steve for the majority of the season. but that shot of him staring back at the byers' place when the lights started to blink again was when i went "...hmm, okay." AND THEN. when he flipped that bat? his whole f*cking character flipped for me too. i was a steve girlie from that moment forward. still am to this day.

I dont know if its been mentioned before, but originally Stranger Things was suppose to be a limited series with just the first season. The creators were very inspired but 80's films so ending the show on a "Or is it?" ending was gonna be it but Netflix ordered more season due to all the success and popularity. The rest of the seasons are still pretty great and fun to watch but you do end up seeing some plot holes/ trying to tie up the whole story now they added more to the lore. Season one will always be top tier storytelling. Looking forward to your future videos on the next few seasons. :)

Stranger Things is derivative of many movies, television shows, even comic books and novels. But it manages to avoid directly copying any of them while honoring all of them, and creating something that feels at once like a beautiful homage and a perfectly-timed amalgamation. The writers draw heavily from older characters, like Charlene McGee in Stephen King’s “Firestarter” and Zuko in Avatar:The Last Airbender (Eleven and Steve Harrington, respectively) but mix their own wonderful brew. At the same time, the show is a sort of meta-textual critique of the state of contemporary culture, and how it has transformed childhood from an interdependent, direct experience of life to an isolated, suffocating, siege-like extension of prepubescence. Childhood then was adventure, anticipation, struggle, trust, and growth. Childhood now is fear, restriction, proxy representation, memetic expectation, and sheltering. Of course this is generalizing, and both eras had and have real dangers. But then, the threats were usually manageable - and by the same processes that marked the maturation process. Now, no process, shelter, or preparation can shield kids from the real-life horrors our stratifying society has unwittingly spawned and nurtured. The irony, it seems to me, is that the sheltering of children plays a direct role in the development of monsters. Maybe social historians will one day explain, to the degree possible or applicable, which was the chicken, and which was the egg. I myself spend too much time watching people watch things, but with you, I never feel indulgent. You’re always time well spent. Excellent series review, as always. p.s. One day, “wokeness” (which in my experience is, most of the time, nothing more than a right-wing slander/propaganda term for simply being kind, considerate and polite) will come for the humor derived from childhood speech impediments. You’ll probably then look back on your lisp imitations with some chagrin; when that time comes, don’t be too hard on yourself. You laughed at something you maybe shouldn’t have, but then, the show certainly encouraged it. I’ve watched one object of ridicule and humor after another fall to the persistence of human compassion: sex and gender, skin color and ethnic heritage, sexual orientation, regional accents, body fat percentages, family circumstances, educational attainment, physical limitation and disabilities, and so on. It’s a process we sometimes think of ourselves as having mastered, but then something else comes to collective scrutiny and we find ourselves wanting. It’s okay.

THERES NO SPOILERS HERE❤: So exciting getting to rewatch the show through someone else’s eyes! This show is one of my huge hyperfixations and there’s no limit to how much I can rewatch it! Excited to see you move onto the next season (tho not my fave since the writing was made with the intention of making a spin off that never happened) it introduces another new fave character that I hope you’ll get to understand for the rest of the show! To answer your question about the buildings/places in the upside down, from what I remember, and without spoiling, things from Hawkins started to appear in the upside down when Will got there? That’s what I recall from the fandom putting things together from the show and the comics.

I’m so happy that Steve both called out and ditched his “friends”. Not only what he said was true, but also he didn’t deserve to be friends with them. Tommy and Carol are better off being friends with Troy and James. If you think about it, all four of them together don’t just only think and care about themselves, they pretty much don’t care for HUMANITY IN GENERAL.

Can't believe season one is already finished? That happened so fast. To be fair, I binged this show when it came out, I applaud you for managing to space it out as a weekly thing, that must be so tough. I had the same experience with the Percy Jackson series - it was aired on Netflix weekly and it was NOT FAST ENOUGH 😅 But this was such a fun journey, can't wait to experience season 2 along with you!
