Thank you for the video. I've always held that if an error is not quickly and easily visible, it's not worth my time. It's like having to explain why a joke is funny or why a poem is worthwhile. Having said that, I hope you have a great outcome at an auction.

I love big old US coins. So much variation. Lots of little imperfections. The mint was just trying to make coins, they were needed so badly. Those were some big pieces of silver to strike on those old presses, a flat strike is what one would expect.

The darkness on the 1822 is really attractive to me, that one is my favorite.

Bust coinage has been my collecting focus. The availability of the 50C got me hooked into these coins. The 1817/3 are popular and relatively more expensive than many of the other 50C overdates.

Hey Ben, Thank you for another great video! Learned a lot in this one too. Mint errors are not what I look for in coins, but will start to look at coins differently now.

As you point out, strike variance on early US coins is tricky to distinguish from wear. You'll get much different detail on coins of the same grade. Then, factoring in die lapping where the mint repolished dies to extend their life, but further reduced the detail transferred to the planchet. Each coin is truly a unique snowflake.

Nice series of 1817 Bust Half dollars. 181.7 the i's in legend appear to be J's. Same reverse as 1817/14.

Like night vision, look off to the left of the coin, or even in this one(1817) to the right, you can see better the strike-over.

I'm not sure to make of some friends I have who tend to Overton diagnose situations. Fortunately, none of my medical doctors are prone to do this. Great video! Thanks, Ben!

This brings up an interesting question I have for you, Ben: what would you do if a fabulously rare coin...like an 1817/4 half...walked into the store? Has that ever happened? What would you do if a previously unknown example...or "lost for many decades" example...came into the store? Obviously a 1913 Liberty Nickel or 1804 Dollar won't walk in...probably...but what about lesser known, but still extremely rare coins? 1870-S dollar, for instance, or 1854-S $2.50...something along those lines.

Okay one thing I would like to know on my 1809 fifty cent piece I would like to check is what type of edge ×××××||||||| with the words between.... Something I don't recall checking.. By the way this is a beautiful original 1809 piece with AU 58.... Not sure, I don't have this coin in a holder.

Hey Ben it’s hard to get excited about that over strike when you can’t find anything on there weird

The under-strike is only visible in the K-4/5 periphery of the obverse, there you can see the remnants of the reverse leaves from the first striking of this coin. Given the degree of wear this coin has, it would make sense for it to be a bit difficult to see, but is without-a-doubt present.

If you are referring to the flip over strike, it is only visible in the K-4/5 periphery of the obverse, where you can see the remnants of the reverse leaves from the initial striking. It’s clearly a well worn coin, so a lot of the under-strike has also worn away and is no longer visible.
