Potsdam 1945 - War is Over

The big day is here! The Kings and Generals team proudly presents the first video on the new channel and we are starting our Cold War journey with a video on the Potsdam conference held in German Cecilienhof in the Summer of 1945. Although the World War was not really over and the war in Asia was still going on, the allies, mainly US, UK, USSR and France, ended it in Europe and were preparing to reshape the world.

love how at the start you mention china and then never again. The allies only provided token support to the nationalists which contributed to their downfall to the communists. I'd love to get more history as not told by the communists on china leading up to what was considered WWII to the west and into what turned into communist china and the cold war. I feel that what happened here is a bit integral to the telling of the cold war story and not much of this history is taught in the west.

Could be a nice series, but it needs more stock footage/diagrams/alternative shots/etc., just having the host stare into the camera and speak is dull, especially when the host clearly doesn't like to speak for such a long period of time (let's be honest Indy Neidell is very talented, and the host can't be expected to just be Indy Neidell on camera). Using more alternative shots would keep it more interesting and let the host take a break so he doesn't have to do so much in one take.

Here's a suggestion: slower pace, longer videos when the cold war was not in danger of going hot (just like The Great War at present) and faster pace, possibly shorter videos when the war can go hot. A weekly coverage might have to summarize the entire Six-Day War in only a single video...

Hmm... Looks pretty good so far, the format works, the narrator has a good voice (It's a bit lecture-like, as others have pointed out and I agree that more stock footage and maps and what-not would be a good idea) and you've kept the language on the topic pretty neutral. However, I'd REALLY like it if you included the sources you used in your research, academic standard for citations would be nice but I'd be content with you just saying which academic paper or whatever and by whom it's made that you used as a source. It's always good to have more transparency in videos that are more "academic"-like, like this one. A lot of history channels on KZbin seem to work on the motto "I just know this" or "It's common knowledge" and it leads to them stating things that have been proven wrong. Sometimes, it's stuff that has been proved wrong for decades... :P As I said, I'm liking it so far so I will watch this with interest... and continue pestering you about the sources because I'm an engaged viewer... and a bit of an annoying twat :v

Would be really interesting to have a video on the migrations post WW2 of ethnic Germans from occupied territories, volga Germans for example. Apparently it's one of the biggest, if not the biggest migration of peoples of in history. Thanks for the video!

To simply say Stalin or communism caused Holodomor is blatantly ignorant, simplistic and wrong. As for gulags, yeh you can make a case that it was in effect a style of slave labour for criminals, POWs and political prisoners. However their are two things to consider. 1. It is debatable on how many people died in such gulags during its time span. To think that tens of millions died though is very debatable to say the least. 2. Gulags in the sense of slave labour isn't then much different to American prisons which have basically legalized slavery, by making inmates work basically for pennies for private corporations.. So consider these things

Basically making the famine worse. And again that type of thinking you have is very simplistic, ignorant and wrong (not to mention biased). Even historians don't believe it was purely Stalins fault (but it is debatable if he made the situation worse due to his policies). And if he hated Ukrainians and wanted to kill them off, why didn't he just finish it? Have you even had a look at the population growth Ukraine as well? If you think say 20 million died (as what people like to believe) at the time that would've been more than 3/4 of the population. I can keep going but the popular narrative doesn't add up. That 'whataboutism' was a consideration. Is to make you think if you think that's slavery, then you must equate 21st century American prisons as also practicing slavery. And one can argue that it's practiced predominantly on the black population. No one is saying gulags were not horrible. Many did die. But the myth that tens of millions died, if true needs more evidence, as it is heavily lacking

I remember TV's just like the one in the left corner of the broadcast studio! In the main road near where I lived was a shop called 'The TV Graveyard' where as the name suggests TV's (and other electrical and electronic goodies) were broken up for their parts, mostly valves, capacitors etc. But one cupboard which we boys always zeroed in on contained big ring MAGNETS! These were attached to the back of the TV's cathode ray tube to focus the beam. Sometimes I think he must have broken up other items needing magnets: of particular note was a curved magnet forming 1/6 of a circle and if you bought enough of these they did indeed fit exactly together. Shows my age I guess if I can recognise the radio and TV in the 'Cold War' studio as things that were actually in use! I don't think the TV Graveyard's proprietor was that enamoured of small boys (it was usually boys who bought the things) but it was worth his uncertain temper to purchase these big magnets at two OLD pence (just under one current 1p) each! Even in the early 1960's two pence each was a fantastic bargain.

Stalin was paranoid and wanted a meat shield, he wanted to protect the USRR (not for love of his people, but because it was his property) . With people like this you don't give any reason or try to openly challange him, because they will escalate. It's like an agressive and suspicious animal, you need to build a relationship and trust. Truman and Churchill didn't wanted to play this game. They were right and wrong (stalinism is cruel, not very different from nazis, but you give a reason for a mad man to act and spark 56 years of sh** for half of the world).
