Thank you so much for breaking down the different card types. I’m watching a lot of videos and no one is breaking them down and they use the different card types in an industry way that makes you feel alienated a little. I’m back to collecting after 20+ years of being away from the hobby so this is really helpful. Thanks for doing this.

Great video! One thing I’ve learned and would add…eBay is obviously a great place to buy singles, but it’s also the way collectors value a cards worth (by looking at how much a card has recently sold for). So if you get a good deal for a card on eBay, ultimately you just lowered its value a bit as well. This is why I try to finds deals at cards shows or other websites. Unfortunately there isn’t a Becket magazine anymore like we had in the 90’s lol

I’ve been into the hobby for about 3 weeks now and I just stumbled upon this video. I can tell you I did everything you said not to do in my first 3 weeks 🤣: Bought flashy random cards, bought the most hyped players (Zion, Ja), bought random sets besides prizm, and clicked on eBay all day and night. For Baseball especially recent rookie cards and not "prospects" the go to products would be Topps "flagship" - Series 1, Series 2, and Topps update (but these will come down to the players in the checklist in that year) And usually the first set they appear in, out of the above sets is the desired card to collect. Also Topps Chrome, Topps Chrome Update, Topps Sapphire are also desired sets. But do your research, compare prices, compare market fluctuation over a number of months before investing. If just starting out spend time researching before jumping in. 👍

The one thing most people don't know is that in Prizm the Green Parallel is more rare than the Silver. Basically there are less Green than Silver..but like you said, the Silver is more shiner.. more appealing to the eye. Green parallel is cool if you get players from the Celtics, Bucks, Philly Eagles, ect. I think if people realized that the Green is more rare I still don't think it would be matter...the Silver is just to appealing..and by now it would be hard to convince people otherwise.
@TheComebackCardInvestor

great tips, i am just starting to get into this hobby. i find this very nostalgic of when i used to collect baseball cards as a kid. just wondering cuz you mentioned to focus on buying rookie cards, but what about also buying cards when a player changes teams (i.e lebrons first year in a laker jersey)?
@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Chonger. Welcome and great question. 1st year jersey cards definitely attract some interest, but not nearly as easy to determine as RCs. Lebron/AD 1st year Lakers cards skyrocketed in July/August but have cooled tremendously. While I expect them to hold some long term value because they actually won, thus building their legacy in LA, I see them as better short term flip opportunities, especially because the players may not win a championship (Kawhi with the Clippers, KD with Brooklyn, etc)
@ryandenslow8225
@ryandenslow8225 3 жыл бұрын
Too add to this...I think it depends on the team they go too. Lakers are one of the more Iconic franchises in all of sports. Honestly I think it comes down to two things. One, does the player have an individual fan base (ie. Lebron Fans compared to Cavalier fans) and also how popular the franchise is. Think Lakers, Yankees, Celtics...those kinda teams. Both of those combined I think made first year Laker Lebron cards popular. Still though, they have to build some kind of legacy or they ultimately or they probably go down.

To the youngsters out there, his first few words are key. When investing, in anything, you must *constantly* fight/subdue emotion when making decisions. For higher end football/basketball, I would also add Contenders and National Treasures. Also rookie autos are very underappreciated now. People will eventually realize how overprinted the base cards are, especially in the last few years. Guys can only sign so many autos, so those have some inherent rarity, and are also much cooler than just a piece of paper. I also like your rule about not paying more than a PSA 8 value raw. I have a similar rule which is that I'll assess it online (just stay away from anything in a sleeve or toploader) and then pay no more than 1 grade less than what I think it is. If you're less experienced with grading, this rule should be 2 grades less. So if you think something looks like a PSA 7, pay no more than the PSA 5 value.

For Hockey, low-end = Upper Deck Series 1 & 2 for Young Guns, mid-tier = SP Authentic for Future Watch. The Cup is the high-end product but it's not as liquidable and also the thick card stock usually does not get a good grading. Also note that majority of your buyers will be Canadians, meaning if you live in the States, you might have to reduce your sales price to compete with Canadian sellers because the Canadian buyers have to pay sales tax for imported goods.

Good tips. Topps Heritage for baseball can also be good depending on the year. They recreate the flagship design from 40 years prior. So some designs are going to be more sought after than others. Or if the year they are recreating had a great rookie class, that can also add to the hunt. Also gotta double down on Young Guns for hockey. Outside of maybe the Cup RPAs, it has been the gold standard for Rookies for like 20 years now. Despite being 'low end', the right players can go well into the 4 digits.

So would you buy a Mookie Betts 2015 purple prizm card number 40 out of 99 PSA 10 population 2. I mean to me $60 is a very fair investment on that card considering the low pop and everything else there’s only 99 of them in the world

Sounds reasonable to me, but the first question I ask myself is "what is the sales history of this card or comparable cards to find a reasonable price?" Without sales history, I'm lost and it's a guessing game.

Hey Conor. With Prizm's release, Mosaic "should" lose attention and value. Also, with Burrow's injury, the 2020 class has dropped in value overall. If you can stand to hold, I would hold. I don't see a premium on Mosaic cards at this moment with the injuries/Prizm/winding down of the NFLs season.

That is fine , I will sell them for $5, knowing that even if I end up selling them for $2, I am still making money. The lesson, don't be afraid to negotiate and leverage your position that the seller cannot guarantee condition. Be the risk inverse investor.

Idk if this is a dumb question, but I’ve been a collector and I kind of want to get into investing and selling cards, is a card of a player in their first year with a new team worth more than a different year? And I’m assuming the rookie card is still more valuable but how does it compare with that? (E.g. a 2020 Tom Brady for the bucs)
@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 4 жыл бұрын
Hey George. Welcome and that's a great question. All I can speak to is what I have observed so far...and that is more demand around an all time great in a new team's uniform. However, I believe there's a good chance that this is temporary and is tied to the success of that player with that team. I don't know of any collectors that want Brett Favre Vikings/Jets cards or MJ collectors that want his Wizard cards. What's I'll be doing is selling those cards at a decent profit if I can buy them low enough vs trying to 3x my money on them. Even LBJ's Lakers cards have fallen off a cliff so I don't see them as being nearly as desirable as a serial #d card, RC, or perhaps 2nd year

I've been collecting comics since a kid and im guilty of loving and buying the cool looking flashy ones just because they look cool on the wall! Even though there are a million copies and only a few dollars, there are some with really cool vintage holographic art. And they are just great decorations and conversation starters that you are ok with taking out and letting a friend read. I love holographic collectibles in general. They just look special to me. Like an ancient rellic. Only he who holds it has the power lol. I really want to start an Oklahoma QB rookie card collection because my brother got me this really cool looking holo Baker Mayfield rookie card and I cant go another year without getting him some more brothers to go beside him. Im trying to find a Spencer rattler and Caleb Williams rookie card at OU and I can't find one yet for rattler. I really want it to be holographic. I saw one but it didn't look legit because it has the transformers font on it. I just want a clean looking holo with a decent pose. I dont care if it's highly collectible or not as long as it isn't over $100. I found 1 really cool autographed one but it was hundred of dollars. I am not there yet.

if you have a certain player on a certain card, the potential is limitless. I pass up on the Jordan's rookie psa 10 like 5 times, when it was around $7k. no regrets because I think his '84 card is the true Rookie. The best advise I can give to people is make a decision on the player(s) you want and move on. Learn to find that sweet window spot. If you think you've missed it, there will be other players.

@Strtracer522
@Strtracer522 4 жыл бұрын
Just so long as you know it’s a gamble and have that as a mind set, ripping packs is a THRILL and so fun! but nowadays, everything is so expensive and has really taken the “fun” out of it as it’s basically a guarantee you’ll be losing value based on the odds. so buying singles of players you enjoy or want to collect long term is much more practical and saves you money. Just my two cents 🤷🏻‍♂️
@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 4 жыл бұрын
hey Thomas, like Zack says it's way more of gambling, but entering breaks but doing your research on the team, the players, and the cards that you could possibly get from selecting that team (typical in breaks) is the strategy you can apply. Check out Part 2 for a bit better of an explanation.

Good advice. Great advice. But if you're just getting into cards now, the ship is already sailing away for any star rookie card in any of the major sports. The market is exploding with the perfect storm of variables. Covid, 'stimulus' checks (they're just giving us our money back), media hype, globalization, etc.. It won't be too long before it will be virtually impossible for the general public to have access to coveted rookie cards. We are seeing it every day with constantly increasing purchase prices for the big names, combined with new money pouring into the market that has ever-increasing demand with fixed supply if we're talking rookies. You gotta just jump into the madness before it's too late. Before the sb I bought 3 Brady bowman chrome rookies. I've doubled my investment value and it was 2 days after I decided to get back into cards after a 20 year break since childhood. You're biggest mistake is watching Amazon stock skyrocket over the past year pushing so high that the average investor can't afford it. We're seeing the same curve with sports stars and their rookies. And the increasing rookie card prices are pulling up the later year cards with them.

Hey Aaron. Of course. 15% is steep so that's always something to include with projections. It's kind of like selling a house. You know there will be 6% minimum taken so you have to do the math ahead of time and see what you're willing to sell for or what you can do to stretch your margin. Selling in FB/IG groups is another option but that requires some time and risk as well.
