I’ve been taking cards like Sire of Insanity and Drannith Magistrate out of my non-cEDH decks recently for this reason. There are some cards that just naturally synergise with most things and shut down the game in a non-fun way. In my experience you play them once, take a look at the other players reactions, then never want to play them again. Hullbreacher etc fit that mood and I think - as you say - with more experience you learn to identify those kind of cards and give them a miss.

Worth noting that as good as Abundance is at getting around those draw screw effects used in wheel combos (not to mention good in general in casual edh), it doesn't get around Maralen of the Mornsong's or any other verbatim "can't draw cards" effects because of the very rules-lawyery interaction of the specific wording on the cards. Also would've liked to've seen it noted regarding the Teferi cast lockouts that cards with flash and cards that give some or all of your spells flash, e.g. Emergence Zone or Vedalken Orrery, will NOT override the lockout, again for rules-lawyery wording reasons. This one seems less intuitively apparent than Maralen/Abundance, though it may come up more often in actual gameplay because of the popularity of those Teferi effects. Still, not having known how that specific interaction plays out, it would've been nice if it'd been addressed so I didn't have to go digging for the answer elsewhere. Hopefully anyone else with the same question finds this info useful.

I haven't gotten there yet, but I run Zur's Weirding in my cEDH Muldrotha and it's definitely a win condition... just don't play it if you're not close to a dominating position or else you're getting targeted hard. Also, Zur's Weirding opens you up to the Abundance trick form earlier in the episode. If you have dredge cards, Underrealm Lich, etc, you can replace your draw with that instead of Zur's Weirding's effect to mill yourself and not have to worry since you're playing Muldy.

Yeah definitely a mistake. All of these things are combos. I don't know why they insisted on calling them synergies first. It's hard to distinguish between the two, as they said, and they got it wrong. A great video though and always love to see DJ getting excited over powerful things.

Underealm lich is one of those cards, that you don't realise how good it is until you actually play it. This card has gotten me around and through so much in my Nethroi deck. Getting around Stax, simply not having to pay for a smothering Tithe, etc etc. If you're a graveyard deck, at least give this card a try, it's huge!

Most of your list is combo, not synergy. Synergy would be tactics like "wheels" alongside "when an opponent discard" triggers, or lifegain triggers alongside "when you gain life". Combos tend to be single cards, irreplaceable or short of options. Synergy tends to be coincidental overlap where both cards already drive forward on their own. Top synergy usually comes from A causing B, and B helping make A easier (an example would be a Grand Warlord Radha deck, where the commander lets you spend mana on tokens, and the tokens make more mana. Let the cycle continue). For example Knowledge Pool and Omen Machine do nothing obviously beneficial in a random Esper, Grixis, or any other colour deck. It only exists because you can put the combo's other half in the command zone (Lavinia). If you plan on running that in your EDH deck you might as well play Chain Veil Teferi, or Glint-Horn Buccaneer in a Malcolm deck. They're all single card win-conditions, and should only exist in a competitive setting where opponents expect you to run that level of control, so they can build with awareness that is the meta they're entering. Plenty doable, it just takes your playgroup deciding to do it, not yourself to the bereavement of the rest of the table when you drop what is effectively an instant win (be it through victory or immediate conceding of the rest of the table).

I had a mass land destruction happen last weekend. One player was able to search my library (I'm playing a Windgrace deck btw) and played Reshape the Earth for free. He had 15 lands at this point, which was like turn 5. On my turn I cycled Decree of Annihilation, because he forced my hand. However, my wife played Heroic Intervention and it was such a fantastic play. I was able to recover somewhat quicker than most with my lands matters deck. The other two players were not so lucky. My wife on the other hand took the game easily at that point. Nobody could ever catch up. It was so fun. Haha!

Command Zone: you do cast the first spell that goes into the knowledge pool. You should should make a disclaimer. This synergy works when you lock someone out with a card like curse of exhaustion.

I really love these episodes with DJ. The best part of this episode was the one with replacement effects for carddraw for drawing more cards. But the rest of the episode reads more like how to break the social contract rather than how to add great synergies to your deck. So just as a little feedback. I’m glad Josh got the vaccine, he can finally sit next to people. Wait, vaccine... why did he get a vaccine? Because there is a pandemic of course. Pandemic, I GOT IT. Pandemic has eight letters in its name, if you subtract 1 from 8 you get 7. 7 mana is what you need to overload cyclonic rift, and what color does cyclonic rift represent? Blue. The last time josh cast cyclonic rift in game knights was in the double masters episode, but dimir is not represented by the colleges, however Josh cast cyclonic rift in the theros game knights episode, and his deck was simic. So that means Josh will be playing the simic precon in the next episode of game knights, how could I have been so blind? Wait I, a fan was blind, just like the card blind obedience! Which is Orzhov, just like one of the colleges. But do you know who else is a fan? That’s right, the game knights audition winner. That person will play the orzhov deck. Deck, wait a minute. Decking someone is an alternate win condition in magic, and josh died to decking in the theros episode. And who decked him, JIMMY! He was using an izzet deck in that episode, and there is an izzet precon for Strixhaven. So, Jimmy will be using the izzet precon. Wait, precon? Precons hold commander decks, which are a Magic the Gathering product? Who is in charge, GAVIN VERHEY! He is a boss of magic, and boss is part of the name Boss Nass from Star Wars. If you're playing the Nevinyrral's Disk and Avacyn combo, consider Boompile! Boompile doesn't enter the battlefield tapped. So in 50% of all cases, Boompile will be better then the Disk. If you are activating Boompile right before your turn and the flip fails, you can still activate Boompile after your Untap step. That's the fist moment you could have used Nev's Disk. So in 25% of all cases, Boompile is just as good as the Disk. Only in the last remaining 25% cases Boompile could be slower. However, Boompile still has these upsides: 1) Hits Planeswalker! 2) The activated ability doen't cost mana! 3) Player can't react to you winning or losing the flip. So an aristocrat-players needs to decide, if he/she is saccing his/her whole board BEFORE the flip. If he/she saccs all, but you lose the flip, he/she lost the board for nothing. If he/she does nothing, the whole board gets wiped and the aristocrat player loses all value he/she had on the board.

When they get to the "Draw Three" section and don't mention Alhammarret's Archive with the Sylvan Library. In addition the Teferri works with an enchantment called "Eye of the Storm" Also just something that's super fun imo is the interaction between "Trostani, Selesnya's Voice" or "Angelic Chorus" and the card "Soul of Eternity". It hitting the board is nice as you just double your life total, but with the encore effect you can octuple your life on the spot! Even if down to the 10-20 range you shoot back up to 80-160 life and they all have that power and toughness. If you can populate with Trostani after that, welcome to the 160-320 life range and some horrifyingly large dudes.

One of my favorite two card synergies is Jace, Unraveler of Secrets' -8 ability and Mind's Dilation. Really hard to pull off, but it's worth it. Then combo even further into it by playing anything that limits casting like God-Pharaoh's Statue, Curse of Exhaustion, Arcane Laboratory, etc. I have all these pieces in my Nekusar deck, and can get it off if I draw lucky. In fact, Mind's Dilation is just the added bonus. Jace's -8 emblem and arcane lab alone are enough to win the game

On the Knowledge Pool synergy, I have an entire deck built around that 'synergy', with a wider Artifact control theme. It also contains Karn, the Great Creator + Mycosynth Lattice. I agree that on paper they look like powerful 'synergies' but if you play that deck, you're playing it like a combo. You usually overload a Cyclonic Rift to empty the board and then cast Lavinia/Teferis + the Pool and explain what's happening. The majority of the time, people recognise the lock and concede, then you put the deck away for 3 weeks. I would not play it against anyone who wouldn't be interested in doing so, but I have also spent a long time tuning my build that doesn't contain Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, etc. I'm trying to play the fairest possible version of an admittedly demoralising lock. Edit: This was posted before I got to the Karn+Lattice discussion, but they missed that Karn's -2 does actually grab things from Exile so the ability is not actually dead. I've been able to get many lock pieces from exile with Karn.

I actually think you guys missed a pretty big one: flicker/blink + ETB effects. Some of the most difficult to counter decks I've played against in the last couple of years work by getting small value cards in play, then repeating that value until you have an overwhelming advantage. As an example, Emiel, the unicorn from jumpstart that can blink other creatures. Many times someone will play a spell that goes under the radar, like Wood Elves (ETB: search out a forest). You don't think about it at the time; it's a Rampant Growth, who's going to counter that? Then, Emiel hits the table, and suddenly that wood elves is increasing the available resources by up to 50% each turn. Hint: exponential growth = powerful. What's insidious about blink effects, particularly those on permanents, is that they occur at instant speed, so once the card is on the battlefield, you can't stop it really b/c they can simply do the blink in response to whatever effect you are using to remove it. Also, usually, they can blink targets to prevent targeted removal from working, and use delayed triggers (blinks that return on end step, for example) to get around board wipes. Finally, on the _really_ mean side, blinks that set up delayed triggers are one of the few ways to _permanently_ remove a commander from the game, if the player who is the victim doesn't properly understand how it works. You know what's not fun? Trying to play your build-around commander deck --- without the commander.

Very important thing that should be addressed in the Teferi Pool combo, ESPECIALLY by a Commander channel, is that Commanders aren't stopped by it. I've had a net decker in my area just blindly play the comco and think the game was over, and it took quite some time to explain why "No, you didn't just autowin with two cards, there's a reason neither is banned". Of course, abilities can also be played.

Another one for the Mycosinth Lattice "armageddon" is actually OG Karn, Silver Golem. Since you can pay 1 to make any non-creature artifact into an artifact creature with P/T equal to its CMC, and Lattice turns all lands into artifacts, Karn, Silver Golem allows you to spend 1 mana to blow up 1 land. While this isn't as mana-efficient or powerful as overloading Vandalblast, it is another way to get rid of all your opponents' lands while keeping yours in play. My friends may or may not hate my mono-red Daretti deck....
