yes, if someone doesnt want kids, its probably best for the adult. if an adult is forced to take care of a kid, all of the adults potential gets wasted away. it will be hard for the adult to grow old and have actual accomplishments. and no, having a kid alone is not an accomplishment.

If I might suggest, having children is an honor and it is also important to the development of a human. The culture of avoiding having children is a symptom of the immature adult mindset our society has. Children provide a reason to do better, to make wiser decisions- to encourage immature people to continue to avoid the responsibility of children is not a solution. Additionally, no one is ever truly prepared for a newborn- having one forces people into the next stage of adulthood and brings a new mindset and perspective. I get that just saying "have a baby" is not a solution either, but we should change the culture by celebrating motherhood and fatherhood, promote family values, and encourage youth towards wanting strong families.

Dog, the human race is massive. A baby is born every day. A child is conceived everyday. Someone’s birthday is everyday. The human race will go on. We’re supposed to live our own lives. It is their choice, but most people today are making the choice to not have children today. Not enough people are having children to replace the people that are passing on. They already wonder who will care for the aging population and take over their jobs when they retire. One of their solutions? Robots. That's how little value people place on human life. They are allowing themselves to be replaced by robots and AI. People's hearts are as cold as ice. Might as well be robots themselves.

Well to an extent its selfish because not wanting to have learn and deal and be responsible for another is selfish. Does it make you 100% selfish person overall ? No. My sister doesn't have kids..our kids love her and spend alot of time with our families but in the end she likes her house being neat and clean and doing her own thing and keep to her routine. She cannot have another person living with her at all because they will do things she wouldn't like. But she is lonely. And its like we'll would you give up a perfect quiet simple life of just you in exchange for the stress the mess and loudness of kids? I don't hate on people for not wanting kids. That's fine. But the reasons for not and you can't get around it is inconvenience. And there are some who have good reasons like financially can't care for a kid or have personal issues. and no one is saying all parents are selfless. I grew up in a household where my dad married my mom when she was 17 and he was 22. He basically raped my mother and back in those days babies out of wedlock was a big shame. So they were married. he abused the crap out of my big sister, physical, mental and psychological to the point she wanted to kill herself at age 7. when I came aroud 11 years later there wasnt physical abuse but very STRONG mental and psychological abuse, tons of guild tripping and gaslighting, and I being female dad didnt give two shits. My mom didnt yer she already "groomed" her in being an obedient housewife while he cheated on her. SHe had dreams of beciming a pharmacist and opening her own pharmacy, but that dream never came true. I wish I can say f it all and move out but the amount of crap I put up with I feel worthless and cant do anything at al in my 30s. I agree with this. It’s extremely selfish to project your own beliefs onto others. Sad part is that many people fall for this. People around them successfully manipulate them into unwanted parenthood. These people claim how selfless it is to have a kid, but when the person that was reluctant about it but proceed to have a kid anyways because “it’s a selfless and right thing to do” and come to find that this is the worst decision they’ve made and are now stuck with being a parent, leading to misery which can drive some people suicidal (and no, I’m not making this shit up). But where the fuck are those so called “selfless” people now? Exactly, most of the time they’re nowhere to be seen. The new parent is now completely on their own.

I'm almost 28 & my husband just turned 30. We both grew up in abusive/neglectful homes. We both had to grow up extremely fast & take care of everyone around us, expecially our parent(s). I've always wanted to adopt/foster if I ever did have kids. My husband never really cared either way. We are both still open to adopting/fostering, however neither one of us wants kids currently. Since we both had to grow up so quickly, we are just enjoying taking care of ourselves for once. We also enjoy just being an Aunt & Uncle. We help out my sisters that are single mothers. We both have mental health issues. Babies in particular trigger my ptsd so its best for them & me to stay away from that kind of environment. Most importantly, we just don't want kids. I don't see that as selfish. In fact I think its a really admirable thing to recognize. Too many people have kids because "thats what im supposed to do" & it creates a society full of broken people. Looking after a child isn't a choice, it's an obligation. Call it selfish or unselfish, but it's domestic abuse. I get where you're coming from but by your logic, that would mean that a mother with a heavily autistic child should just abort it rather than give birth and get help from a professional on how to raise one, or at least give them to another human who has the empathy to raise one, because there are plenty of people who'd be happy taking on that role whilst you go out getting pissed proving you deserve to be locked up for child neglect. Just because you can't look after a normal, healthy kid even at that, which is what we're mainly talking about when it comes to these women, is because you chose not to. Leaving a kid to starve is quite literally selfish, this should be obvious. And ending the kid's life simply because you were planning on neglecting and starving them is the epitome of narcissism, I don't get how you can defend someone who literally admits they'd hurt their kids if they can't kill them.

As a paediatric nurse, I see far too many children end up in care because of their social circumstance. Telling people that they should have children when they aren't ready, or even financially sufficient is really negligent. In this day and age as well you have to have a decent amount of money to raise children and give them a good life. I’ve watched and agreed with a lot of Brett’s videos, but I’m going to have to pass on this one. I feel like I did the “right things” to be successful in life- good grades and doing extracurriculars at school, went to college and graduated early, and went to grad school. I came onto the job market at the very end of 2013 and beginning of Jan 2014 and it was the most frustrating process. I probably applied close to 100+ jobs between late Dec 2013-May 2015, waking away with only a few interviews and more rejections I ever imagined possible. I ended up working as a dining room server at a Brookdale Senior Living community for $9.05/hr because I desperately needed to be employed. Although I lived at home with my parents, I paid for everything I needed with my own money (with the exception of some groceries) and was not able to save any money because $9.05/hr for 25-30 hours per week is not a lot. When I finally got a “real” job that paid $14/hr, I had a long commute and it ended being a toxic work place that took an immense toll on my mental health (along with other difficult, personal things going on in my life) that I spiraled into a horrible depression. I changed jobs and went to $17/hr, still with a commute, that also quickly became a toxic place to work and further deteriorated my mental health. I found a new job for $17.19/hr that was a much more supportive place to work. Then, my boyfriend (now husband) and I moved to Wisconsin from IL. I found a wonderful job in a new field and started end of Jan 2020. Cue the pandemic. I went from FT to PT in a matter of 5-6 months (I worked as a nursing home social worker) due to low census. I unfortunately was never able to regain FT hours and was laid off Feb 2021. I went on unemployment through mid-May 2021, but never received my unemployment checks until AFTER I started with a new job (that I am still currently at), so I went 12-13 weeks without any income. If my husband didn’t have the income he had at the time, we would have had to sell our house and move back in with our parents. My husband has a much higher paying job than mine (community case worker) and even with our combined income, it’s just enough to get by sometimes. We want at least one kid, but financially it would be very tight. We’re both 31 and work FT. So it’s not selfish to not want kids. I did the things I was supposed and followed the rules and am NOT in a position to bring a kid into my/our life without hardship. It’s not fair to me, my husband, or our future child to bring them into instability when we don’t HAVE to. Brett, you are very intelligent and mature, but are still so young with a lot of life to live. Please don’t shame others for not having the “traditional” lifestyle because that is the “right” way for society. Stop telling people they need to “get it together” you’re xyz age and should have moved past abc trauma. I’ve been in therapy and I do the work, but not everyone has the same opportunity. Kudos to those who are self aware to know their limitations.

Just think of it this way. If everyone had that mindset where they decide not to have children, the human race will go extinct in just one generation. Even then, every person that chooses not to have kids means someone else has to do it, for the planet's survival (passing on the responbility to someone else). I agree that certain people shouldn't have kids, but if you're doing it simply because you want to have pina coladas on the beach and wanting a new Gucci bag every month, then that's extremely selfish. I have 2 kids, and yes they're difficult to manage and I have to make a lot of personal sacrifices for them, but being a parent changes you, your mind suddenly prioritizes them first over you automatically.

I’m 23 with two kids. Met my husband seven years ago in high school and we got married three years ago. One income is completely possible to raise children off of, you just have to be willing to make the necessary sacrifices to live that life with those values. We don’t go out to eat, we don’t go on extravagant vacations, we budget and save. I cook, I clean, I raise the girls, I make sure the bills are paid, and he works to provide the means. I worked until I literally went into labor, and I haven’t gone back to rejoin the workforce since. We agreed that the price of daycare wasn’t worth it as well as the idea of another person raising our children instead of their mother. We don’t use any welfare either. We just live tight and prioritize. If you don’t want to give up comfort to have kids, that’s ok, but be honest with yourself about it too. It’s not that it isn’t possible, it’s that you are choosing not to, and again, that’s ok just be honest with yourself. I love my children and I love being a mother and a wife and of all the jobs I’ve had this one is the most challenging and rewarding by far.

This is a big problem. I have heard so many people saying "I can hardly take care of myself, I couldn't take care of a child, I am so immature" and it is probably true. Children are not being shown how to take care of themselves, how to work, how to cook, how to clean, do taxes, plan things, make things, fight, survive. In previous centuries people would have served in the military, gotten married, had kids, built houses, had land, grew crops in their 20's and 30's, they were often self-sufficient at a young age. They were mature and knew basic values and skills, but I'd say mainly because of the predominance of technology and the internet people are less self-sufficient, less mature. We need to teach self-sufficiency and basic skills at a young age because this is hurting us, not only us individually but the country as a whole.

So let me get this straight. As a woman, I should risk my health and life to carry a child to a 9 month term & put myself in extreme pain just to provide a human cog for "society" without any financial compensation (I live in the united states) ( and no the little tax breaks parents receive is NOT enough, nor is the food stamps, medicaid or wic is NOT enough when parents are out here fighting for these benefits) When on the other hand this "society" has never done one single thing for me without expecting either direct or indirect financial compensation. Hell, I can't even go to the beach in South Florida without having to compensate the city just to park. For a longgggg time this world has been ran by government tyrants who want to use our existence to live wealthy lifestyles. If resources were equally shared amoung everyone, more people would see having a child as a duty to continue this loving existence, but that is not what this world is and it is not what it will ever be (expecting future generations to fix this is not only selfish but delusional)

I have a big issue with this mentality. I have had severe chronic illness since I was 16. Multiple surgeries, years in the hospital, an ICU stay on a ventilator. I'm lucky to be alive. I have some very rare congenital abnormalities. It's taken me over four years to find a doctor who would even tell me what my options were for not having kids. I even went to a geneticist to have more ammunition for my argument that children is not a good option for me. Not only could I pass down these debilitating, life altering chronic conditions to my own flesh and blood, I'd have to stop all the medication that's keeping me out of the hospital. Even if I could get pregnant, which I don't know at this time, there is strong possibility I wouldn't be able to carry to full term healthily. I have seen numerous doctors and they all IMMEDIATELY shut me down, refused to even tell me my options, and just pushed birth control on me. Which I can't take because it causes me optic nerve swelling and I could literally go blind. They would not even discuss permanent options because I might "meet Mr. Right and change my mind". They did not even take into consideration my legitimate concerns. I would not wish the hell I've lived on the devil himself much less my own precious child. It turned my whole world upside down and I will live with health issues the rest of my life. I would not ever want my child to deal with the physical agony and emotional turmoil my issues have caused me. In addition, I don't want to risk miscarriage or the child being born premature/with other serious issues because I can't carry to full term. Abortion is legal in most states, yet I can't have a hysterectomy or have my tubes removed or any other similar surgery as a nearly 30 year old simply because I don't already have any kids? Thank God I finally found a doctor who laid out all my options and is leaving it up to me. I also have severe periods, to the point I stay home a whole week of the month because I'm throwing up and screaming in pain, and she even gave me options to resolve that issue. She is a godsend. But it shouldn't have taken me so many years to find her. This whole "women NEED to have children" impacts women like me very negatively. I don't think most people even consider that. We are often treated very poorly by some doctors, who wag their finger at us and say we don't know what we're talking about. I find it insulting to say that I'll never be happy because I may never have children. I think it's incredibly selfless and responsible to not want to risk my children having to live the hell that I have. And that's if I could even get pregnant and carry to 9 months, which is highly unlikely. This ideology makes me fearful for my future. I go back and forth about adoption. Then I think "am I even healthy enough to be an active parent the way I want to be?" I feel like gosh, am I going to be depressed and miserable forever without kids? That's a damaging mindset to get yourself into. This issue is far more nuanced than simply "women who don't want/have kids are selfish". Not to mention, if you don't want kids, you shouldn't have them. It doesn't make you a bad person. It's the single biggest responsibility in the world to raise another human being and you shouldn't do it if you aren't interested in the monumental task of parenthood. Just because someone doesn't want kids doesn't mean it's because they want to party their life away and only think about themselves. That's just patently untrue.

@@that_Senni I COMPLETELY understand. A huge part of my issues are chronic abdominal pain and it's horrible. People who have never experienced chronic pain just can't fathom what it's like to never have a day without it. And thanks to all the stigma around pain medications, it's almost impossible these days for people who have a genuine need for them to get prescriptions. Not to mention all the side effects that come with them if you can even get a prescription. I wonder all the time what my life would be like had medical marijuana been an option when I first got sick and never had to take opioids aside from after my surgeries. I live in Texas so it's ONLY legal to get a prescription for the CBD/THC drops that go under your tongue. You don't get actual weed/bud like in California, Colorado, etc. and the list of illnesses they have approved the drops for is very very minimal. And insurance won't pay for it because it's still technically illegal federally, even if you're in the Texas Compassionate Use Registry like I am. We have made so many strides in medicine yet we still do a piss poor job of pain management. Even one of my surgeons said that to me. I sincerely wish you all the best and please know you aren't alone. It's your life and you have every right to not have children and don't let ANYONE try to push you into it or tell you otherwise. You, like me, are not just thinking about what you want. Even if I DESPERATELY wanted children, I have to consider all of the risks. And I would want to be the best mother possible, like my mother has been for me. And I know that may not be possible because of my health. It just enrages me that if a man wanted a vasectomy, even in his 20's and had no kids, people would clap for him. But I've had to go through a million hoops and countless doctors to find someone who would even consider doing a procedure that would make me unable to conceive, despite all of my perfectly valid, logical reasons. I'm so blessed to have finally found one, but it never should have taken 4 years. And the way the other doctors spoke to me is inexcusable. And you don't have to explain anything about your parents to me, I totally get it. Neither of my parents have any of my issues, aside from the severe periods. That runs on both sides of my family. But my congenital abnormalities are extremely rare and there has been almost no genetic research done on a lot of it. So as you said, I just have no guarantee. Though the geneticist I saw told me it's highly probable at least some of my issues are hereditary.

@@Laureee578 EXACTLY. I've always said, if a man in his 20's with no kids asked for a vasectomy, people would clap for him for being responsible. And you're so right. The doctors don't want to touch me with a ten foot pole because they're worried if I change my mind I'll blame them or try to sue. I'd have zero legal leg to stand on so idk what they're worried about. It would be a decision I made of sound mind and signed off on. I'm just so glad after several years I found a female OBGYN willing to lay out the options and leave it all up to me. I was so relieved at my first appointment I cried and thanked her for even taking the time to listen, not cut me off, not lecture me, and inform me of what options are available. She came up with ideas that fit the best for my body and my issues. She's an angel. I hope every woman dealing with this can find someone like her!

You are young and naïve. It's not just harder it's near impossible. I work two jobs in order to afford my apartment. My apartment is old and needs a lot of repair, yet for all 50 households here we are lucky because the studio apartments at the other complexes around the neighborhood are newer and cost the same amount as this complex with two bedrooms. We have had the rent raised twice on us in one year. The cost of housing and living is astronomical. I grew up in an extremely impoverished household. I know what it is to starve, go to school with the same clothes day after day, and be humiliated by other children and sometimes adults because of poverty. It was not just hard it was awful. Both my parents did the best they could, they struggled so very hard often with little help. And a couple of times we became homeless due to factory closures. It would be selfish for me to bring a child into this world with the state that it is in, and try to raise it despite things being "Hard" as you put it. No, we are not meant to suffer, but we suffer because our world sets it up that way, and people who make the statements that you make without really suffering yourself, excuse it.

When ppl shame mom's it absolutely irks me to no end. I decided about 15 years ago I didn't want kids and I still stand by my decision, I'm happy. I find that when someone is happy there is absolutely no need or even thought of putting someone else down, I feel that the women that shame one another for either having children or not having children are unhappy in some way.

Exactly, like I don't want people who do not want kids to be parents, cause obviously in some cases, someone can hate children and obviously you wouldn't want them having children, they would make life for their own child miserable most likely because they hate children. Therefore I get not forcing others to have children. But I do not agree with hating children. No, the people who hate children shouldn't have children, but it shouldn't be okay that they hate children either. Not wanting children for yourself and despising children are entirely different things. Not everyone is called to be a parent, of course.

As a 64 year old mother of 8 (yes, eight) kids and 17 grandchildren I think if you don't want to have children that's cool, look,I wouldn't part with any of my kids/grandkids but it's not for everyone - now my kids are all adults I'm getting to go and do the things I wanted to do and I've realised having more energy would have made it even better, you want kids go right ahead, it's the hardest job you'll ever do but absolutely the most satisfying - if you don't want kids go and live your best life with no regrets - simple 😊

I’m a millennial in my early thirties and I’ve always known I didn’t want kids (before it became “popular” to be childfree). I don’t think it’s selfish to acknowledge that you might not be fit to be a parent. I feel it would be more selfish for me to have a child just because and then be an awful parent. Also, I’m just really damn tired and do not want to add to my already overly busy, stressed life. No thanks. People can criticize and call me selfish, childish, and irresponsible all they want but I will never desire to have a child. Other than being childfree by choice, I am a responsible adult who cooks, cleans, has full time job, and doesn’t waste time on social media such as TikTok. I’m a normal person, I just acknowledge that I would not be able to be the mother a child deserves and so I choose not to have any. However, I have followed the childfree subreddit for years and I do agree that it has become toxic. I don’t agree with shaming women who desire to be mothers. I know it’s a legitimate desire, even if it’s not what I want in my life.

I'm the same age, in the same situation and totally agree with you . I know myself and I don't think I'd be a good mom. However, I would never criticize any woman that choses to do so. All children deserve to be loved and have parents that want them. Childfree doesn't mean I hate children or go around calling them names and patronizing parents. Respect for both choices is in order. That Reddit is not for childfree, is for child haters and so very toxic.

My mom did and thought the same thing. Thought she would be a bad mother. She had me when she was your age or a few years older. She raised me as a single mother and is the greatest mom in the world. Some of the traits she thought would make her a bad mother actually made her a great mother: she didn't think she was that great so she was humble and teachable, she thought she was impatient which can be good for parents because they don't tolerate bs, she never wanted to parent so she wasn't super rule oriented so I never felt resentful or rebellious and we always had a close friendship, she went back to school and studied/read with me which game me an advantage in school. Anyways, sorry for my rant. Not telling you what you should or shouldn't do, but I just thought you should give yourself some credit, You seem responsible, mature, and thoughtful. If I could go back and tell my mom that when she was younger I would

I really don’t think there’s a need to justify why you don’t want children, same with why you should. And as for whether or not it’d be a good idea for someone to have children, that’s another different discussion altogether. What’s dumb is the people who try to moralize their position and shame others for holding a different opinion than their own, going as far as to insult them too. That comes off as someone trying to justify their opinion to themselves more than anything else, really.

Facts. My mother was a very selfish person. She always told me that her love was purely conditional and that I had to earn it. Only me out of my five siblings because she didn't want me but "saved me from an abortion". She didn't teach me to drive, so I had to stay at the house. Got mad because I wanted to be a doctor and "Leave her". Got mad that I got a scholarship to sing in Italy. She got so mad that she made me give my money I was saving up for the plane ticket and food and shit to give to my third oldest sister, who went and partied in Scotland.

I’ve never wanted children because I came from a really dysfunctional and abusive family. My childhood gave me a lot of problems in my adulthood, but I’m nearly 40 now and have been on a healing journey for years. I feel I finally have enough love and stability to give a child, so my husband and I have been talking seriously about adopting. People have treated me so horribly and made assumptions about why I never even considered having children until now, but they don’t know my story. Be kind.
