He spent a ton of time making this well done video. Please don't disrespect him by turning his post into a political argument. Some people voted for A. Some people voted for B. Some for C. Neither side cares for the other. That is old news. PLEASE focus on the car and the video. Take the political comments elsewhere. THANKS for doing the nice video, Ben!

I really enjoy your videos since i went through a lot of this with my Iroc, a few idiot owners had it before me and so many things didn't work or were just done wrong. I diagnosed and fixed around 5 electrical issues after buying the car, I can't stand it when stuff doesn't work.

Nice video as usual! I used to own an '89 C4 and battery drain was caused by the seat adjustment switches, one of them was slightly loose and would draw a constant amount of energy from the battery. Luckily I had mechanic who worked on Corvettes only and he seemed to know every trick in the book, he fixed the battery drain problem :).

I like your attention to detail, a good analytical mechanical mind. I'm a Mechanical Fitter by trade with 50 years experience I was taught to resolve, repair or make new parts. I've restored a number of cars, including a venture involving an Australian Government incentive program to construct and export AC Cobra's. Enjoyed your video, the owners are fortunate to have you sort out their car.

It is that out of the box thinking that makes you good at what you are doing. That vacuum line holding the throttle open was so damn simple I really wonder how a shop with probably multiple mechanics did not see that.

Ben, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thank you for pointing out the abysmal craftsmanship by the wrench turners. I won't call them "technicians" because they don't deserve the title. I'd wager that the time spent in drilling the hole and locating the spring was more than what it would have taken to do it right to begin with. Idjits like those is the reason that I'm very careful about who touches my 98 Z28.

Way to go Ben, you just saved alot C4's now!!! And I am sure there are plenty more headed your way to be fixed correctly...there is still alot them out there, compared to the C3 numbers. My 1990 coupe had a disappearing digital display of the speedo and gas gauge...it was my excuse when I got pulled over for speeding,...NOT!!! ...unfortunately I never got that part of the car fixed, due to LOW resale values...but moved on to C5's and A C7.

You never know what your going to find when you tear into a 25 year old car. My 1991 convertible when I got it wouldn't idle right, sometime low & sometimes high. The previous owner always had it serviced by it's local dealer and it even hit the service bay at a famous Corvette shop. I know this because when I bought it it came with all the service records ever done on the car. Turned out it just needed a new idle air valve and a new throttle position sensor. When I plugged my laptop in it gave me the numbers on the sensors that showed them bad.

Yes , the fuel gauge in the C4 is prone to some big swings as to the tank amount . The probable failure of this fuel gauge is a classic symptom of the metal composition of the gauge reacting to the ethanol in the fuel . New replacements are now made from stainless steel and don't react to the ethanol . Hope this one was the new type .

Good on you to figure out what someone else was too dim to figure out. I don't own a C4 Corvette but if I lived close to you I'd bring my car to you to fix, that is if you'd take me on as a customer. :) I really like your work ethic, you believe in fixing something back to the original way it was not only supposed to work but designed to work, not just create a quick 'patch'. Good on you, Ben. So, how's school coming, you graduated yet? Good luck in the future. Steve

The Best Little Vette House in Texas. If that was mine, I would have replaced the fuel pump while the whole 9 yards were out in all it's glory. Better safe than sorry. Does not look like there is anything you don't know about Corvettes. It's a shame there are still sub-standard independent mechanics out there charging premium prices for lousy work. Then they have to send it to you, and spend more money to get it right. Finding a great mechanic is still like finding a needle in a haystack.

I agree. And it is tacky but the back windshield made of plastic had a crack across back, stickers fixed. I dont believe in bumper stickers...that silly tail wing was on car at purchase...i am trying to get running correctly , then the rest of car will be next..cuz, what's. The point if it won't run...and thankfully, I found Ben. So, it will be back, shining for more needs. Now, from purchase to video it's been about 6 yrs. In a shop wherever, for about 4 of those....so this car will accept donations towards recovery, lol....its been twice the cost of car thus far...now I'm in too deep to give in...I bet Ben wouldn't mind getting suggestions because I dont know what to do with trim seats carpet etc...most votes for black on red, bl on black, red white black etc...i just do not care for original choice of interior...so I'm glad you didn't judge car either...and Ben is such a great guy, honest down to earth and never pretentious or condescending ..thats why i Love this sight...and thanks again Ben! C ya tomorrow for 78 project😎

Seriously stupid BUBBA'S at that shop....wow I used to hang out with shade tree mechanics in the 70's and 1 of the dad's was on a pit crew in the late 50's & early 60's. Learned a lot from him teaching me and his son to work on the family cars!!! So now I know when a water pump bearing amongst other sounds in the motor are going wrong. Like belts that need to be tightened and not replaced! along with Axel bearings and other funny sounds that come from cars! ;). I like how you have the space and have learned to go through the older vets like you do....:). Keep it up, I'm definitely a new follower

Hey Ben next time you have to change the sending unit on a mechanical (uses a needle) gas gauge car, see how the needle reacts to you moving the sender float. The short answer is that they all react slowly like that. There's a capacitor in circuit to keep the guage from bouncing with every bump and acceleration, including braking.
@TheCorvetteBen
@TheCorvetteBen 5 жыл бұрын
Funny you say that because my 56 Cadillac does not act like that at all.
@BobPegram
@BobPegram 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheCorvetteBen I guess it's the exception that proves the rule! When last I had a car with a mechanical guage, I'd fill it up, turn it on and watch the needle slowly rise to full. Does that square with what you've seen on older Vettes or other cars? I hate auto correct! It just turned "vette" into Bette. Grrrrrr!

Shop mechanics are under so much time pressure to get the job done and out the door. If it isn't done right the first time, there is always another service opportunity. That's how a lot of dealers and shops look at it. It is to bad, but true.

Nice Video Ben! I replace the Sending unit and pump on my 85 this past summer it was real crusty and the little housing with the float windings was hanging by its wire and not attached to the sending unit anymore! anyway I noticed when I did mine that the new pump and sending unit didn't come with the little accumulator thing where the pump connects to the sending unit, instead it just had a little piece of hose to connect them. I see your new sending unit didn't have one either? I assumed as you did that the accumulator wasn't needed? I also noticed that the digital cluster may have an illumination bulb out I recently had my cluster out to repair some solder joints and replaced the bulbs and sockets when I was in there. I got the bulb and socket kit from batee.com.

I am going to guess that car was really never taken care of.....the state of that interior and seats has likely nothing to do with its age but careless previous owners who did not treat the leather, etc. I suspect this lack of care also pertained to the car's maintenance, etc. I would be wary of the engine rebuild. If they were sloppy putting the motor back in and putting the accessories back correctly, makes you wonder what sloppy work they did on the rebuild. Unfortunately, honesty, quality and pride of workmanship demonstrated by Ben are now the anomaly rather than the norm.
