I have had two C4's, First was new, had it for 5 years then sold it. 2nd was in 2002, a repossessed car in rough shape but the engine was new, fixed it up, kept it about 3 years then sold it. I love the clean unpretentious lines of the '85, no rear brake light, wouldn't change a thing. Now I am retired and yearning for an other one, lots of bargains out there but first I need some garage space.

I bought a 1985 corvette back in 2011 it had a ton of miles and its a daily driver. Well it's 2017 and the car still fires up and runs like a champ. I must say it's been the best car I've ever owned and I have a lot of muscle cars but this one just preforms so well. I plan to purchase another.

First off, love your channel, you have some great videos here with great topics! Here is my experience with my C4 Corvettes as daily drivers. The C4 are actually quite reliable once you take care of common maintenance stuff. I drove my 1984 Corvette for 9 years straight with nothing more than common maintancance, (and yes, I was not a fan of the Cross Fire injection as well, always could smell the fuel when driving without the top or when the windows were down and usually after a drive to work, the odor would get in my cloths) and then I had the privilege of finding a very nice 85 Vette for $5500 that I ended up selling my 84 and taking the money I made off it and going through the 85 to make reliable. I ended up replacing all u joints, wheel bearings, new tires, shocks, radiator and hoses, thermostat, and ended up having to replace the fuel sending unit as well because the fuel pump brackets fell off and was causing pressure issues. I stopped driving mine about a year ago and have started restoring it, was still going strong but just decided it was time to get something I could haul stuff around in and respect the Vette as a weekend or summer days driver. Keep up the great videos! Jareth
@InverseWeenis8 жыл бұрын
i highly doubt the fuel smell was the fault of the CFI itself. sounds more like you had a leak. i have a very rough 84 and i dont ever smell fuel while im driving, much less enough to stick to my clothes.

Hi Ben. Just wanted to say you are one talented young man. I was blown away when you were doing the test drives and I noticed you went right by my house. I had to do a double take and rewind. And yep you live in my neighborhood or close by. But anyway I acquired a C4 not too long ago and I am inspired by your videos to get it street worthy.

I used to own an 85 I am going to watch your posts and see how you come out with it.. I thought it was a great car back in 1995 when I bought with 60,000 on the clock. so thanks for sharing someday I will get another 85 Vette.
@oliverrojas71173 жыл бұрын
Smart find. Thanks for showing the interior without the dash instrument cluster and explaining why you chose an 85' without cross fire injection and VATS ( vehicle anti-theft system). I did enjoy watching. It's nice car and it's cool to see a real live project daily driver.
@Lloyd336 жыл бұрын
VATS is easy to bypass. Just take a multi-meter and measure the resistance of the little 'bump' towards the back of your key. Then go to Radio Shack and buy a resistor of the same value, follow the two small wires coming down from your ignition switch, snip them under the dash somewhere and connect the resistor between the two wires (on the 'car' side, not the side coming from the ignition switch). All done. Bonus: now you can add remote start. 80's car security was a bit.. lacking. =P

Welcome to the C4 Club, Ben!!! I've got an '87, red w/ charcoal interior, loaded, 118+k on the clock. She's been very dependable, always starts, and has acceptable performance. It looks like you have the optional Sport Seats, with air bladders for a custom fit.......you will LOVE them!!! I wanted to pass along a word of warning. Flush out the radiator!!!!!!!!! It looks like you may not have a water temp gauge, so PLEASE hook up one ASAP! Those plastic radiators will plug up on you like mad, over heat it enough and you'll need ANOTHER engine. Hmmmmm, how would I know that??? But they make a great daily driver as long as you remember what you're driving. As dependable as a Caprice! Make sure she's running cool and E N J O Y ! ! !
@TheCorvetteBen9 жыл бұрын
MykeyB Luckily, this car has had the rad swapped out with a heavy duty aluminum rad so there shouldn't be too much crap built up yet. I also believe the stock water temp sender works as well. Hopfully mine will be as dependable as you.

Enjoyed your video, just got 1990 C4 convertible, I hate the VATS too, bypassed it on a Riviera I had. My engine now has Edelbrock intake and carb, adjustable distributor, auto trans has been rebuilt. Traded my 1976 Camaro LT for it, couldn't afford the nearly $200 per week premium gas, this L98 runs fine on regular with a few gallons E85 for more octane and a little MM oil.

I bought one almost exactly like yours last fall. Instead of a cracked glass top it had a regular top that the previous owner's son left the bolts loose on and it flipped off at 45 mph. I got for around 4K and put a couple more in it on the interior and a new glass top, makes a great daily driver.
@TheCorvetteBen9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Hippen I am either gonna swap the cracked top for another one, or find a good fiberglass one and paint it black.
@vettekid33269 жыл бұрын
I was able to fix the damage to the fiberglass top & re-bond the frame to it. It makes a better choice in the summer as even with the sun shade in place the glass top can heat up fast here in Arkansas.

Picked up an '84 C4 (yes, I know it has the crap cross fire) recently for $700. Body is in pretty good shape, top like yours has a crack in it, it actually runs pretty well with almost 280k miles on the original engine just very under powered as '84's were. Plan to do minor body work, repaint myself the factory black color, engine swap to a 385 Fastburn GM crate motor I have laying around. Rebuild trans/rear, replace bearings/bushings everywhere as needed, new rims/tires, carpet and good to go. Already having the new engine I'm figuring right around $5,000.00 to be running around in a like new, but much, MUCH faster 1984 C4 Vette.

Ben, I like your sentiment on the C4. As you know, I own a C4 ('93, also white...) And I like it infinitely better than my former C3 ('79, L82) I purchased one later in the gen because I wanted analog gauges. I was actually looking for a '90 or '91. I like the idea of a shift for yourself car. :-) Do you know what gear ratio yours has? AFAIC, that is the true beauty of the C4... Is that you can use it for a daily driver. (Well... At least in Tx, but NOT in Mi.... At least not in the snow...) They ride fairly quiet, A/C works pretty well. Much better with a painted top, tho' . Ride well enough to travel in and fuel mileage is more than acceptable, bordering on the unbelievable, sometimes. I LOVE your choice... But I got the hankerin' fer a C5... Edward

Dude, I picked up that Corvette and posted on Jalopnik. I am still daily driving my 85. Because the car sat idle for 4 years, I had to replace the MAF control box, distributor, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and I installed 94 LT1 injectors that I already had. My 85 Vette is the best daily driver ever. Ice Cold A/C, 18 mpg, and a 12 second 1/4 mile
@TheCorvetteBen8 жыл бұрын
+drew nabors Well there you go, you inspired me to buy one. It was a coincidence that mine is white as well. I'm guessing mine needed more work than yours, but I am getting to the point now where it is almost done
@UCFCamaroSS8 жыл бұрын
My car sat for a few years in storage, so it needed a new battery and alternator. Step up to the CS-144, its more efficient and worth it. One of the original injector stuck open and flooded the intake, left me stranded. LT1 injectors are more reliable. Get a smog pump delete kit from TPIS and upgrade your power window regulators to the 94-96 design, much faster. I have all the bugs worked out, so if you need any advice, text me at 904-753-3160 Drew

Picked up an 85 a few yrs. ago Automatic. It only has 32000 miles on it and its like brand new inside and out. I know nothing about Corvettes and haven't a clue what I have for a motor. But the car screws. lol. There have been a few issues with it, but its just a toy car for me, so I have fun with it when I can. I have a 24 yr. old son who loves to drive it. It has a 4 speed Automatic, and snaps your head and chirps its tires really easy. My buddy says they did something to the tranny, but IKN. Do'n't know too much about them. I do know its fast as heck.. Love taking the top off and just driving it around. Both my windows just broke on me thou, as they only go half way up, but can just pull them the rest of the way. Looking at whats wrong,, they say some kind of motor ribbon strip in the door. They are about 30 bucks, and can get them local. I wish I knew more about it thou, as having worries about the temperature. It gets up around 210-220 and that worries me. Had a sensor put in last year in the block for the fan to kick on, but something still not quite right. Will figure it out. I might just wire the fan direct with a toggle switch. But really want to try and keep it original. The interior is like brand new. Carpets nice. Another slight issue is when it rains it leaks a little. I do keep it in a garage. The weather stripping around the roof are 45 years old and dry. Pretty sure you can get all that too, but its the labor that gonna sucks. I am getting old, 66 but I always had fast cars as a kid and loved working on them. Mostley Mopars. Anyways, like your car, sorry for the long chit chat.

One nice thing about the '84 is that it can be converted to a carburetor, and remove all the computer and emissions crap. And an '84 is old enough to be insured as a collector car, and in my state that means no more emissions tests. Yes it is a little complicated to build a new dash, because the computer operates the stock dash. But it is easier than it looks like it would be. I have see a couple of '84 C4s converted to a carb (you can swap the whole engine out if you want, and drop in a high hp carbed small block) and they turned out nice. I don't tinker with computer cars. I have had a couple of C3s, including a 1977 that I put a 500 hp engine in, with no emissions crap. Again collector car insurance makes it possible to do that.

I honestly have no idea haha I haven't looked up a specific brand but I've seen some videos on it and got curious. Also do you know if "stop leaks" work on a radiator that has a small crack on it? I know i'm throwing a lot at you at once haha i'll stop now.
@TheCorvetteBen9 жыл бұрын
Delagrim Stop leak wont really work for a cracked rad. Its pretty much a gimmick. If you want to fix a leaky rad, you need to replace the rad with new, or take it to a rad shop and see if they can repair it. with 190k miles, Id just buy a new one which probably will cool better than the old one. There have been awesome advances in radiator technology in the last few years.

TheCorvetteBen Yeah, I got some epoxy to try and slow it down since I don't have the money right now to fix it haha I seen a few on Amazon but I don't know which ones to get. They have a TYC for $64, Prime Choice Auto for $48 and a Spectra Premium for $77. I was leaning towards the Spectra since it's a brand i've heard of but the cheap ones are in the budget but I don't want to get a cheap one and then it breaks on me in less than a year haha

It looks like its going to be a really fun project as long as you do a lot of the work yourself and maybe go with used parts to save yourself some money?

Hey corvette Ben, I have a 1977 corvette and was wondering what's the better route to go with it. I was either thinking restoring it to show room quality, or I thought about making a pro touring resto mod out if it. What should I do? Will the 77 corvette ever become valuable so staying stock is good?
@CPAJayhawk8 жыл бұрын
Resto mod... 77's aren't collectible
@nickslisz78958 жыл бұрын
yeah I know!! But i was worried that they would get collectable sooner or later. Thanks for the advice!

Really mixed feelings on the C4. I seem to be in the minority but I did like the style. I am one who thought the C3 went on to long, maybe should have stopped at 75-76, so I was ready for the new look. I have different view now of the later C3's and think that for the bargain you can pick one up for minimal investment and still get the joy of having a C3 at a less of a heavy restoration expense and worrying about being so anal of originality, as the case with my 69 427- 400 and the big bucks I've dropped into it, I wouldn't mind a later C3 to do what you want to do to it with nothing more than having a sweet driver. I had the 89 C4, I liked everything about it, very comfortable nice ride, looks, yes the hood was cool, so I was more on the favorable side of it. Of course it was a peppy car, 350 with the tune port but hard to call a high performance car. But then it was a period where fuel efficiency was kind of a selling point. However, after owning it for about 5 years, I found it was just as happy of a day I finally sold it as it was the day I bought it. The car just seemed jinxed to problems and breakdowns. Anything went wrong the computer just shut the car down, where ever that would be, so right off the bat you were into a toe charge. Every single issue that happened required a trained C4 specialist and even at times they had to plug into the computer and send it to Detroit over the phone to analyze what would be going on. Every repair was a minimum of a $1000.00 bucks, and unfortunately it happened a bit to often. So I guess I would say I have been considering a bargain vette just for the fun of very minimal resto cool driver. I think I would have to go with the late C3 over the C4 just for those reasons. I do think that white color C4 is very sharp looking though, and also admit while I became OK with the rubber front bumpers over the chrome on the C3, to this day I still hate the rubber tail.

@salvatoreciro24418 жыл бұрын
My shifter is the same very hard to shift at times I took linkage off and lubricated all the rods & linkage on Trans and it help some. Have you had any problems with your overdrive? Mine goes off in first gear once I am out of first gear it comes on and stays on in 2nd 3rd & 4th gear the button on the shifter will not turn it off. Do you have any idea's on what cause this.

Can you please advise . My C4 a few weeks ago started to have a problem where the battery will not charge enough . I replaced the alternator and the battery but still I can't get the voltage to go as high as before . Originally I had 13.5 volts and now it's 11.5 to 12.5 I am very concerned because I got stuck a few times and had to tow it back home at great expense . I just have no idea what it could be ...can you please advise

Hey Ben love your videos... quick question, I have an extremely low mileage 78 that needs seats, will the seats from an early c4 fit?
@TheCorvetteBen8 жыл бұрын
They will fit but you will have to change out the seat tracks. Also if your over 6ft tall you will not fit very well
