The difference is light but is present, diecast have more focused sound with elimination of overtones than the triple flange hoops.Also you can set the diecast hoops only at the top and to bottom keep the triple flange, the effort to sound comes from the top head at 85% and at 15% from bottom.
@paulrevelli2 күн бұрын
This might sound weird to most people, but the difference I notice between die cast hoops and triple flanged hoops has to do more with the way the stick feels in my hand when I rimshot. The triple flanged hoop seems a little more "at one" with the snare drum by comparison. With the die cast I always feel like the hoop is getting the brunt of my energy and it's not transmitting to the snare drum somehow. But from a sonic standpoint, I can hardly hear a difference based on what you've presented us with. They both sound great to me. So I guess for me a triple flanged hoop just feels better when I strike it.

Triple flange has more ring - not just initially but there is almost a 2nd "slapback" ring a few ms after main transient that the die-cast seems to supress.

I always wanted to "upgrade" my black beauty with die cast hoops, maybe just on top. but here it sounds to me, that the snare response is a lot more sensitive with the stock hoops on and I don't want to lose any of my snare response. I also thought that the rimshots with die cast hoops would be much more punchy but I didn't hear that either. I think I'm gonna stick with my triple flanged hoops :) thanks for the video!

I was correct at the beginning but changed at the end. Brother, I’m with you as you described the difference in both. They both sound great but they have their place depending on the tunes. This play along for me sounds better with the die cast hoops. You ever tried the Yamaha wood hoops that they stopped making years ago. They are fantastic if you can ever find one. Peace and Blessings Brother!

I AM SHOCKED, not of the sound difference, but of the coincidence. 1) I own this exact same snare drum, but natural birch. 2) Four days ago I was browsing drum shops and found 2 used Pearl die cast 10 lug hoops.( IDK what they are made of, but magnet doesn't stick). 3) I just tested my drum, and I am just about at the exact tuning as yours. 4) Of course, I have just done this exact test 3 days ago.That's a lot of coincidences to me. The reason I put them on was because although my drum sounded great, it had a weak cross stick sound. I thought it might help that, which it did. Also I just love the strength and esthetic of die cast. Soundwise, there is very little difference, and I couldn't tell which was which except on the single rim shots where I knew right away. Not fair though, I mean I just did this. I think that your comparison would have had easily noticeable results if both tunings were equal, but lower. That's where I noticed a huge difference, on my way up to it's current tuning. Great video though, thanks!

there’s some difference, especially on the last tune it’s quite obvious, but… just when they’re compared end to end, just then. another thing is how the microphone perceives/captures the sound, it’s definitely not the same as the real perception which includes not just the sound, but the feeling too

Hey Brother!! When using the tunebot, did you match the fundamental pitch (striking drum in the center) or did you match the lug pitches? I’ve found that different rims at the same lug pitch have vastly different fundamental pitches which I think your demonstration demonstrated perfectly. The die cast hoops sound higher in pitch. Or if my ear deceives me, at the very least die cast is definitely brighter!
@UtwoBed2 күн бұрын
Bro, you need new stable hit-hat stand. Stamped hoops are more open sounding which is only natural because the cast hoops are heavier and resonate less providing more definition.

My to toot my own horn but I got it correct on your opening. However you are a much better drummer than me. The only reason I could tell the difference (although it was on an iPad with NO headphones) is because back in the day I was a session drummer in LA /Hollywood and a music producer as well. THE ONLY thing in’felt"mis that the die cast sounded just a little more professional sounding. However with a few tweaks at the mixing board I suspect they can sound identical. What I appreciate from your commentors is some said the "feel" of the die cast was better. I need all the help I can get since I’ve laid off drumming for 20nyears :-)
@clayfoster8234Күн бұрын
JMO: the die cast has a markedly better, beefier cross stick. As for the rest i do hear a difference but it’s very subtle. So subtle that if the drum didnt come with diecasts I’m not spending 80$ to upgrade it.

Bob Gatzen made a Video for Evans Drumheads over 15 years ago, where you can hear the difference beautiful. You can still find it on KZbin. Die Cast makes a snare more "pingy" and "thinner" in my opinion. It takes away alot of the lower overtones and excites the higher ones more. Played with Die Cast for years since it was the "metal" thing to do, but when I switched back to regular hoops I noticed straight away that I prefer the fatter sound and smoother feel under the stick. Fun fact: Though I don't like the sound and feel of Die Cast on snares, I really love it for toms. It makes them really percussive and responsive, like a timbale. P.S.: I recommend doing these A/B comparisons not with an EAD10. I swear this thing makes all drums sound the same.
@martincorneli53922 күн бұрын
The EAD10 does not make all drums sound the same. The thing is, you're just accustomed to all social media drummers using the exact same settings. Cowboy doesn’t use any compression at all, so the EAD is simply a pretty good mic-nothing more, nothing less.
@ckdrums34082 күн бұрын
@@martincorneli5392 That's true. Still I think the EAD10 is more of a very convenient tool for social media drummers than a mic for quality recordings that translate comparions well to an audience. Even in a "neutral" setting, the sound is way to pre-EQd. There's a reason why the Bob Gatzen Video is still arguably the best comparison after 15 years. They captured how a drum sounds in a room perfectly. Don't get me wrong. I don't dislike the EAD10 and I think the Video is great. Just constructive criticism, cause I don't think the EAD10 is the right choice for that kind of stuff.

I prefer triple flanged, both in sound and feel. I have a Sonor Delite snare with die cast that I'm considering switching to triple flanged for a more open sound. And yes, I guessed correctly.
@Frroggg2 күн бұрын
I’m not gonna lie, I never really took in the sound difference between die cast and triple flanged. Always thought it was more of a premium feel or aesthetic choice. Die cast definitely takes the bite off the overtones, triple flanged sounds more open and ringy. Both great depending on what sound you’re trying to get!
@JazzyJonas2 күн бұрын
This makes me wonder why you almost never see die-cast top and flanged bottom hoops or vice versa on any drums. Seems like a neat way to fine tune the sound.

Stewart Copeland Custom Snare Die-cast top hoop and triple flanged bottom. Control of the ring up top but more snare sensitivity on bottom. It's great
@JazzyJonas2 күн бұрын
@@kyronnewbury That makes a lot of sense for a snare 👍
@stephentyler43522 күн бұрын
Die cast has more sustain and is more focused. The standard hoop to my ears makes each snare hit sound wider and more squished, whereas the die cast sounds taller and fatter if that makes sense. I prefer the die cast hoops for most recording situations. However for the drummers that just play occasional gigs here and there, the die cast hoops are not needed. It depends on how invested each drummer is into playing. Less so on how it sounds. It’s more important to spend time and energy on improving time, feel, dynamics, facility and stick control.

Die-cast hoops are expensive, specially metal ones that are made out of more exclusive materials such as copper or bronze. They can go as much as $100 per hoop. Unless you're doing some serious pro recording with mics for thousands of dollars there is ZERO need in investing Die-cast hoops
