The term "whittlin' " always reminds me of the tiny canoes, and little people, that my dad makes occasionally. He always acts like he's not creative but I think it takes quite a bit of creativity to turn a stick into a little man's head wearing a park ranger type hat. Crafsman, thank you for demonstrating cutting away from yourself and not toward your thumb or hand. I keep seeing people cut toward their own thumbs. I have cut myself every time I tried that “hold knife with your fingers and cut toward your thumb” technique. Every single time.

The Cub Scouts teach the kids that the area around where they are cutting is the "blood circle" because that's where you or others can get hurt if you aren't being careful. It's a tiny bit dramatic, but it's accurate. It is also effective in conveying the dangers in a way the kids will remember. My dad taught me how to do basic whittling, and he (in his own style) taught what you're teaching here. Long story short, thank you for the excellent knife safety tips in this video!

I am a Swiss Army knife and I have wanted to crave stuff like this for awhile. I think I will try this project first. I have wanted to crave stuff because of my uncle and my great grandfather.
