Your video was very informing. Most of my papers are now “paperless” . I can print a copy of a bank statement, insurance policies, utility bills, misc. bills by going online. For warranties, I also send in the warranty card creating an account with the company. Lastly , I use autopay for most of my bills. Maybe this is not for everyone, but has certainly saved me time and lessened the clutter.

I have found that when you have reliable tools and appliances, it's not easy to find the manuals for them after a lot of years of past. And after a certain number of years, companies don't store your previous statements either. So if you've got a business reason for keeping records, it's a good idea to keep them on paper. I have lost files that simply didn't translate digitally from one era to the next. It's really annoying that we are risking a big hassle if we don't keep the paperwork. After all, there's no statute of limitations on audits if someone decides that you intended to commit a crime. You know, a thought crime. This wouldn't of seemed like such a threat if we hadn't been watching politically motivated lawfare For the last decade. Granted, it only involves a big name in the last few years but it's been going on for a while.

Right???? Why do our brains work like that?!?!? LOL
@bitrudder3792Ай бұрын
I know I'm three years too late but I love that I'm not the only one talking about Freedom Filer on a paper organization video! I don't remember how long I've had it but it's been quite a while. And when I had a question on the finer points of using the system, and I called them up, the owner Seth called me back personally and we had a great chat about how to deal with my filing question. Having a way to purge on a schedule has been wonderful! It is annoying now that there are things I have to keep for a lot longer but Freedom Filer makes it a lot more bearable. I added archive folders for decades going further back than 0-9. Done. One of my favorite things is being able to make custom labels that look like they came with the system. 😁 like adding folders for shred and recycle and repurpose in my action box in case I was going through papers away from the shredder and the recycling container. I like to cut down scratch paper that is perfectly empty on one side so that it fits in different sizes of planners. When I take notes the handwriting isn't usually the best, so I generally glean the most important information and synthesize it and type it under the computer anyway so buying expensive paper to write on seems silly. I tried out their binder system, and just wanted to mention that you need an extra deep binder and that it may be too deep to fit properly on a standard depth bookshelf, especially if there's a door on it. That's because there's room for entire pieces of 8 1/2 x 11 paper inside the pocket and the part that has the ring holes in it goes beyond that. I was doing financial and tax binders before starting Freedom Filer, but I didn't think to separate out The paperwork So I could know what I could get rid of or what I should keep. Permanent things were mixed in with remove/replace, and Financial and reference all together. It used to take forever to go through paperwork that was 7 to 10 years old to figure out what I could get rid of and what I should not get rid of. Now it is so easy! I gave up the Freedom Filer binders in favor of more typical binders for a while but ended up reverting back to the hanging files. There's not much friction when it comes to dropping a piece of paper into a file folder. Once or twice a year I might need to get into the file for some thing, but usually it's just for clipping statements together in chronological order.

So many great ideas! Somehow I managed to burn-out my shredder. Note to self, marathon shredding sessions with a budget friendly shredder isn't wise. I will purchase a better shredder once back in my home but for now I tear pages into quarters, toss everything into a 5 gallon bucket and add ⅔ water to ⅓ bleach. After a few days everything has turned into paper mush aka paper pulp. During warm weather the liquid evaporates quickly, the pulp can easily be added to the trash. Some schools will use paper pulp (similar to paper clay), for art-&-craft projects. Since most teachers have to supply many items for students free 'paper clay' is well received in my area.

I love shredders. I love them for short jobs and for long jobs! I have a file folder in my action files labeled "shred." Anything that comes in the mail that has an identifier on it has the address torn off, and popped into that file. The rest of the item typically goes into the recycling. Once I helped my sister go through all of her old paperwork. For some reason she couldn't face the job of shredding and I was like… I'll do it! The trick to not burning it out? I set a timer for two minutes because that's how long the instruction said that the shredder wants to operate at one time. I would shred for two minutes and then go watch a little television. Rinse and repeat. Work and Reward! My shredder at home is a lot better, but I try not to abuse it with long sessions. A little TLC goes a long way!

Excellent video full of great tips! I'm paranoid though, I don't let *anything* that could identify me out of my sight, and I shred everything myself. That includes anything even with just my name and address on it, as that proves I'm a real person at a real location and there are so many things scammers can do with just that bit of information. I've caught dumpster divers at my old apartment complex fishing paperwork out of the trash. I work in a law firm and we have locked bins for highly confidential shredding, and I routinely see the building's janitorial service come in, unlock the bins, and dump the contents in the trash bin (NOT even in the recycle bin) that goes who knows where! That immediately got reported to the managing partner, but I'm not sure what's been done about it. So, I bought myself a decent shredder for about $300 and cross-cut shred everything myself. Thanks for another great video! 👍💖

Wow, shredders have gone up in price since I bought mine! My daughter was the victim of identity theft, and I've seen people diving into our trashcan also. I tend to be cautious as well for those reasons.

I'm not the only crazy then. Actually, I don't mind shredding up paper and dumping it all together although usually I dumped the shredded paper to a huge bin that has a lot of other people stuff shredded into it and I don't go regularly so I have a big bag that all mingles together. But when it is time to shred credit cards, I prefer not to put them in the trash (and of course they don't recycle). I do the same sort of thing. I mix a whole bunch of them up, and when I'm ready I divide it into portions that go out into the trash over a number of weeks. I feel a little silly every time I do it but at least I'm sure that no one is going to get my credit card number, date of expiration and the secret code, and go on a shopping spree on my dime.

I like to write on those thermal receipts before I scan them. The date, the amount, method of payment, and the business I made the purchase from. That way if someone questions a photo copy of a receipt, they can see clearly that the original Had the exact thing written on it that is on the copy. Which matches the original print on the thermal receipt that has now disappeared. Overkill may be but… For big purchases I do this.

I have a big basket. The mail we think we need to watch goes in the basket. I throw away any junk mail. Then a few times a year, I will go through accumulated mail, open it and decide if I need to throw it away or scan it. Anything I think I might need is scanned. Invoices, receipts, EOBs, Tax info, insurance stuff investment statements. If I haven't needed to return something in a couple of months, then those old receipts can be thrown away. I keep grocery receipts for a few days and throw away. I keep clothes tags and receipts a couple of months and then throw away. If I haven't had a problem with my utilities or credit cards, after a couple of months I can throw them away. Most of my bills and statements, I get via pdf files and I download them and file them in digital folders so I don't have to keep hard copy. Anything I use to fill out my income taxes, I scan and save in digital Tax folder then I can get rid of the hard copy. My tax returns are pdf files in my digital Tax folder so I don't keep hard copies. There are those things you keep forever... mortgage documents, deeds, auto titles, life ins, birth certificates, etc. I still scan them and keep them in digital folders too. But most stuff can be shredded or burned and you don't have to keep very much paperwork if you are good to scan what you need to keep. So a few times a year I go through and pull anything I need to scan and then shred/burn the throwaways. Even warranties, manuals I will tear into sheets and scan, digitally file and throw away (be sure to scan the original receipt with your warranty/manual). I keep meticulous digital filing system so I can find by year or by topic. My Scan Snap is small, quick and easy to use. It's expensive but so worth it above my old printer/scanner. It will even scan so that the pdf is searchable. That slows it down but if you are afraid you can't find something, you might do it. I name my files and file in my digital filing system so I don't really need to slow down to a searchable pdf file.

I've always been puzzled as to how long to keep a document or record before purging .. and everyone has a different recommendation. I think it best to let the source set the time limit. Ex: If the power company might hold their records of payment for 90 days, keep your payment receipts for 90 days.

I have had a shredder for years, tried to talk my kids into getting one, they didnt think they needed it. I got them one for Christmas years ago and they have always kept one. I trust no one

How about receipts of expenses on house through the years to deduct if you sell home as to avoid paying capital gains?

Great tips! I just subbed to your newsletter. 😁 I do a lot of craft projects because I'm on design teams. I try to keep myself organized on when everything is due, but notebook type organizers don't help me. Any suggestions?

How are you at using your phone calendar? I find when I'm no longer looking at my schedule/planner, it' helps me to start putting reminders in my phone for the day BEFORE I need/want to do something. That jogs my brain to gear up for it! :)

@@TheCraftyOrganizer I have used it and why I stopped I don't know. Things have been hectic while going through treatment. But I will try that again. Thank you so much! 🥰

I'm trying my best to declutter paper but no matter what I do, I continue to feel overwhelmed 😪 Also, overwhelmed with craft supplies that I don't have time to use. I don't know how to organize them as I do not have space in my small bedroom.

I know this sounds silly - but be kinder to yourself. Put blinders on and just focus on a small pile at a time. It adds up!!!!! I'm rooting for you and am happy to offer suggestions whenever I can.

I know how you feel....Me and my husband live with his parents so we only have our bedroom for all of our stuff. I turned one little corner into my craft/sewing area. I bought a used sewing cabinet for $50, and zip tied six of the mini plastic crates together from Walmart that are $1 each and hung them on the wall above it along with some hooks for my craft supplies

Sorry you were disappointed. For many, seeing how to get through the paperwork with discard options is helpful. Hope you found another video that fit your needs. 😊

Hang on to those divorce papers as well. These are especially important in the event of death and estate distribution.

Wills should never be keep in a safe deposit box. Banks have been known to lock safe deposit boxes, after a persons death.

Funny, I really enjoyed the video. Different people organized differently, you may be someone who doesn't like to see your stuff in the open, and who just wants to get in and out for the information you want. Sometimes I feel like that as well. But not today, and not with this one.
