The thing I particularly like about Charlotte and Harry is that they are so believable. I've known many women who had this picture of marrying the perfect man and living the perfect life. And then the guy they fell in love with and married was the complete opposite of that. But he was a wonderful man, a terrific husband, and a great father to their children.

As if in place of Charlotte and Harry, two intelligent, well educated, mundane middle aged adults, they were instead dealing with two illiterate dumbs from the middle ages. Why the hell didn't Harry read those women the riot act?! Why didn't he explain that Rose was his mother's name, and he does not need to be schooled by people who have no skin in the game?! He's a lawyer - he is the father, one of the the legal guardians of the child - legally, the kid doesn't have rights. The kid can't do anything without parental consent until age 18! "Rose is 12 years old - if she had her way, she 'd eat ice cream for every meal." Sure, let her play around, experiment, but until she's of age, age doesn't call the shots!

This is beyond ridiculous. My sister for years as a kid was adamantly a tomboy, wore every day without fail short cropped hair, overalls and a baseball cap. Before that she went through a phase of pretending to be a dog and barking instead of talking. At various points she wanted to change her name. My parents didn’t pay it much attention. Now age 30 I would say she is the opposite of a tomboy and spends heavily on hair/makeup/clothes. She now insists on being called by her full birth name which apparently she didn’t like before. The doctor wouldn’t have given you testosterone or anything yet, you would have gotten extensive counselling and puberty blockers (completely harmless, once you stop taking them your puberty would have resumed as normal and they just mean that you would have had to have less surgeries if you had chosen to medically transition) so please don’t act like doing nothing if your child is struggling with gender identity is the right way for parents to deal with children who might be trans just because it worked out well for you (though I am happy it did) because it could damage an actual trans kids health and care - like people trying to ban puberty blockers claiming they have side effects despite them being used safely on kids who were growing too fast for years before even being suggested as a treatment for trans kids.

As a teacher, I felt so upset for Charlotte and Harry. While it's not a teacher's place to disclose a student's gender or sexual identity to others in any circumstances, a teacher should at least encourage the student to have this discussion with their parents. To give a specific example, report cards. If a student wishes to change their pronouns, the parents need to know ahead and not be surprised what reading their child's marks. What's more, these teachers were almost treating Charlotte and Harry as bad parents, which we all know cannot be further from the truth. And on another note, Rock's character was not very well done. Claiming they just don't want to be anything in the end after all their parents had done for them..?

I'm happy they're tackling this cos this is exactly how schools treat this. And I'm happy how in another scene Charlotte asks "are you just doing this bcos Eli did this? Ncos everyone else at school is doing this?" Even Rose making a cringe tt about it, it's v much a trend for A LOT of ppl, similarly to how faking and claiming mental illnesses is now i trend. Seriously the DID epidemic is at an all time high on tt. Tons of schools now have this thing where they offer a safe space for trans or questioning kids, which is fine, but alot of teachers even head support groups and stuff and the safe part treats it kinda like therapy, so they don't talk to the parents unless the kid wants to, so it's kinda encourages kids to talk to their teachers instead of their parents, and ppl tend to blow simple things out of proportion like parents and family members GENUINELY not understanding what enby is and it scares kids like if they'll get kicked out and be homeless stuff bcos we ALWAYS hear about ppl disowning their kids cos they're lgbt. It really does serve as a way to drive a wedge between concerned parents and their kids, esp since a handful of these teachers are lgbt themselves. So it's like they're ""out"" to their friends, out at school and in social circles including social media and then get online and complain about how phobic their family members (ppl who genuinely care for them) are. Its like if school is worried about parents being GENUINELY transphobic and/or abusive then actual steps should be taken to protect that kid like cps or something. But kids are just encouraged to like keep secrets from their parents and that further the alienates them and encourages them to seek comfort from randoms who unlike their parents might NOT have their best interest at heart. Like I've seen tts where kids complain about their parents "deadnaming" them and "misgendering" them and how it makes them wanna die, but they aren't even out to their parents and then the comments are just like "omg here if you need t talk" Like???? Its just wild tbh

Announcing it to the teachers before the parents? I could see that. If this person knows that the parents won't understand as well or will react badly, they might want to tell another trusted adult first. But TikTok? Everyone can see it, including the parents (or someone else who the parents know might see it and mention it to them), since it's online. If I wanted to go by "they/them" and I didn't feel comfortable telling my parents, if I only revealed it online, I know my parents would see it either way.

The teachers emphasize they're following Rock's wishes about what they want to be called and how they want to be referred to. "The state" isn't dictating who Rock is; Rock -- the child -- is. Which is how it should be. People know their own identities and feelings best. Sure, we technically can choose to follow their wishes or not, but if we choose not to, it signals to them that we're not someone they can really trust and be at ease around.

That's a very dangerous mindset to have about children. Children deserve to have some sense of autonomy, with limits, of course. One shouldn't automatically assume that it's a phase when a child identifies as a different gender, just as we shouldn't assume it's not a phase. Let it play out for a while and see how they feel. Meet them with love, compassion, and curiosity, not anger, frustration, disrespect, and patronization.
