I listened quite often this song when I was younger, about my 17, 18 years. Now, I am 29 years. Life passes like thunder. I had an Elise, once, and it has passed away as well... Now you are 25 years old. How many things you thought couldn't be more than that? In the end, "There is nothing we can do, at all".

As I walked into my dark bedroom and layed on my bed and had the radio tuned into the only alternative music station on AM in Phoenix, AZ, The Cure's 'A Letter To Elise' came on. The last single from their album 'Wish'. As I laid there in the darkness, I strangely reminisced about my life. It was the end of my adolescence. And my life as I knew it changed drastically after that November night in 1992. Thank you to The Cure for another major bookmark in my life. It couldn't have been done by a better song and band.

I had a gf named Eliza (which is kind of the same but in Spanish). I couldn't make her eyes to catch fire the way they should, and I couldn't stay, just as the song says. I remember her with a lot of love and I wish the best for her. I have not heard anything about her on the last 15 years but I hope she is doing great. I played this song for her once, she loved it. And every time this song is played on the radio or KZbin, it brings me all those good memories. I'll never forget her.

0:29 [Chorus] Oh, Elise it doesn't matter what you say I just can't stay here every yesterday Like keep on acting out the same The way we act out Every way to smile, forget And make-believe we never needed Any more than this Any more than this 1:08 [Verse] Oh, Elise it doesn't matter what you do I know I'll never really get inside of you To make your eyes catch fire The way they should The way the blue could pull me in If they only would, if they only would At least I'd lose this sense of sensing Something else that hides away From me and you, there are worlds to part With aching looks and breaking hearts And all the prayers your hands can make Oh, I just take as much as you can throw And then throw it all away Oh I'll throw it all away Like throwing faces at the sky Like throwing arms round yesterday I stood and stared Wide-eyed in front of you And the face I saw looked back the way I wanted to But I just can't hold my tears away the way you do Elise, believe I never wanted this I thought this time I'd keep all of my promises I thought you were the girl I always dreamed about But I let the dream go And the promises broke and make-believe ran out 3:22 [Chorus] So, Elise it doesn't matter what you say I just can't stay here every yesterday Like keep on acting out the same The way we act out Every way to smile, forget And make-believe we never needed Any more than this Any more than this 3:48 [Outro] And every time I try to pick it up Like falling sand As fast as I pick it up It runs away through my clutching hands But there's nothing else I can really do There's nothing else I can really do There's nothing else I can really do At all

A song about a couple who no longer love each other but stay together in the hope that they can rekindle what they once had but knowing its over. Neither can bare to be apart from the other but both know its time to move on. This IS the Cure's best song. "And the face I saw looked back the way I wanted to" The narrator is saying in the letter everything he/she is too scared to say to elise in person even though you can bet Elise has has written the same letter 1000 times herself. They'll both be sad remembering happiness

When you loose some one as described in this song, one is forever listening to it. And there is nothing else I can really do but to listen to this song over and over.

The Cure has so many songs that are just so captivating. A Letter To Elise is no exception. It's among my favorite Cure songs. So many memories this song brings. I was 16 in 1992 when the album was released. The bass, the lead guitar, the drums, everything just perfect in this song ☺️☺️☺️.
