The MDR is not decided entirely by Visa and Mastercard. Banks also plays an important role to decide on this. Moreover, MDR is distributed among Issuer, Acquirer and Payment Facilitator. 80% to 90% of the MDR is taken by Acquirer(Merchant's Bank) and Issuer(Cardholder's Bank) and remaining 10% to 20% taken by Visa and Mastercard. UPI and Rupay business models as of now are not sustainable as banks have no benefits in issuing these cards and services. Its only because of Government's mandate.

Our family has 10 credit cards but only two rupay cards. However our 90% transactions by volume are done using Rupay via UPI. If we count total value, the percentage will still be more than 50%. I applied for a new Rupay card someone back but I did some error and was issued a MasterCard instead. Those days I flatly refuse any offer of any other card. I want only Rupay cards nowadays.

After UPI, RuPay credit card with UPI was the biggest game changer. Yes not everyone entertains that but it is still really good. Buy one thing to note is that merchants will charge the extra 2-3% if you want to swipe card and agree to swipe too.

Bank are trying to force visa & Mastercard , in 2022 I opened a savings account,while filling up the application I chose to get a rupay debit card ,but it came a MasterCard When I asked the manager he simply said this is not our fault it came from Bhubaneswar,the incident was at ( Canera bank ,puri, main branch)

I used to love rupay until the bank started to charged me for the annual maintenance charge and didn't provide me a contactless rupay card so I switched back to Visa Classic. The most annoying thing is the card I got doesn't even work domestically and internationally on e-commerce websites. Edit: Can't use rupay debit for recurring payments for subscriptions on netflix youtube spotify apple music etc.

It's a bigger trap when you use upi from your credit card. Your spends rises where before it was from your savings account you can control or note that transaction but now when it came to CC you will be using that credit amount as your upi payment. Just think about it once!

Rupay card is good n all but not on par with Visa in terms of international Ecom payment. It still has a long way to go. And yes tried multiple rupay credit cards before commenting here unfortunately I had to surrender all those and get a single Visa card. For domestic payments UPI or virtual debit card is more than enough.
