In fact, I have hired Malaysians before. You can tell they are "hungry" as compared to some Singaporeans (not all). So they come across as very willing to put in the long hours and hard work to perform. When I left my role, one of those I interviewed took over my role as manager leading 40+ staff. To me, that was a success story. The key was she was hungry and willing to put in effort to go above and beyond.

As a boss, we LOVE these types of people, i love my Malaysian staffs working attitudes, compared to most of my SG workers. However i do get worried for their health. My malaysian staffs think that 40+ hrs not enuf, she wants 72hrs.. which is not possible la. I also no cold hearted like that to make her work so much. But working hard is really not for ur boss or company. If you work hard, you reap the fruits of your success, and in turn you will feel good and proud of yourself. Work for your own validation.

Is there no place in society for people who want to take it slower? Do we abandon them? No place for a diogenes way of life? Is it the purpose of societies and countries to toil for companies?

Is it alright to have no regrets in life? It is actually ok. You need not be "worried" about people with no regrets because we can live life in the present, and see regrets as lessons than regrets itself. So while having a certain expectation while giving interview questions, there is also a need for interviewers to have the mentality to learn and accept the views of interviewees too.

every generation got their own good and bad. As a boss, you need to know how to use these types of people in their own way. Since everyone is built different. It's actually not really about the generation, it's really the person themselves. I have seen some Gen Zs with rly professional work and service such as myself, and ive also seen Gen Zs that have 0 respect towards their colleagues and bosses. Older Gens might have a more hardworking approach, but the gossips, unhealthy work life balance and trying to one up another in the company is another huge issue. But once again, not every older gens are like that. Both needs to adapt and learn from one another, have a bigger world view instead of what they see on tiktok or what their parents/bosses brainwash them to behave.

I actually don't know any Gen Zers. My kids are Millennials and I recall all of the complaints about Millennials though I think that some of their behaviors were a response to changing corporate culture. I started working in the age of "The Company Man" - workaholic and corporate loyalty. As companies dropped loyalty in this century, workers did the same thing. The unemployment rate in my state (New Hampshire) is 1.9%. In the neighboring state, Massachusetts, it's 2.6%. I look at job postings and there are lots of job openings in all kinds of jobs and all kinds of fields. So I think that anyone can find a job. Even at entry level. Finding an appropriate job is harder - something that you want to do, in a location that is convenient to where you live, that pays enough to cover your costs - is more difficult because of our severe housing shortage. My understanding of Asia right now is that there is an economic slowdown due to China. But I've read that there are a lot of wealthy people moving from China (and other countries) to Singapore - so it would seem like the economy is doing well.

Never ask HR that (major red flag), that question is important but youve got to word it correctly and channel it to the hiring manager.

Love that Jon Paul isn’t around the podcast now. Really couldn’t stand him in the older episodes. He didn’t contribute constructive comments on the topic, but bias and honestly puzzling by opinions 🙄
