As a Norwegian and one of probably billions of World citizens all across our planet who were watching, aghast, the attack on USA's Capitol unfolding on live TV before our very eyes, it has been quite disturbing, and frankly depressing, to behold how it even was up for discussion whether trump is suitable to be on the ballot or not. And the ruling on that, by USA's so-called Supreme Court, is downright abominable.

After leaving office, he and Hannity did a speaking tour. It was the same talking points, but relatively mild. Then the day where he left planet reality forever. He mentioned he got the covid jab and the audience instantly turned on him and so did maga world. Not to lose popularity, he regurgitated any conspiracy floating around about Biden, and other politicians which then got reposted and a feedback loop formed which continues today. Jerry Springer, Madonna and Lady Gaga knew how to sell to their audiences, summed up by Gaga: If that is what the little monsters want, that is what the little monsters get. X45: hold my diet cola.

I find it kind of inspiring, imagine if they did this for every US citizen getting released from prison. Reassuring them that no matter how harsh their crime, no matter how harsh the punishment they received for it, their Senators still see them as true American citizens and part of the Nation. That this can really be a new beginning for them. Bonus point: Given the sheer amount of prisoners in the US carceral system, it could possibly be a really taxing obligation for Senators to attend to, giving them some reason to really want to find solutions to the issue. They might even want to make the part about "new beginnings" a reality, imagine that.

@@Xelante427 You've got a point there. At the end of the day they served their time, and now it is time for them to move on and have every opportunity other citizens do. But... @playerpage

I'm okay with the idea that everyone gets a second chance. What makes me cringe is that the January 6th riot was directed at the Congressional building and those who work and serve there. So a Senator giving a rioter (even one who's done their time) a flag is like a victim pandering to (not forgiving, which is noble, but pandering) their abuser.

I'm living in Brazil. Something extremely similar happened here. The main difference is that almost every single person involved went straight into jail, most of them in the same buses that took them to invade the Congress. People involved in the logistics and finances of that operation are being processed. Former President seems to be heavily involved. America, supposedly the so called Leader of the Free World, still is trying to figure out if they will apply their own laws. This is a precarious situation for your system. No democracy is free to the risk of a dictatorship.

Gohmert giving her that flag is so insanely disrespectful to this nation's military men and women, veterans, and their families. That flag, carefully folded in that triangular shape as "Taps" plays and rifles fire, is what's presented by a soldier to the family of a veteran who has died. It's presented at their funeral "on behalf of the president of the United States and on behalf of a grateful nation." That woman has no right to that flag and Gohmert has no right to bestow it to her. He should be ashamed of himself, but he's not capable of shame.

Speaking of 9/11, I had a thought earlier today while listening to a fairly patriotic country song today. I feel like the Republican Party, trump in particular, has grabbed patriotism by the flag. In their eyes, Democrats can’t be patriotic because they want to fix the ills of the country…or in their minds, ruin it. Every time I hear republicans talk about better times, it’s always when some pretty terrible stuff was going on. Always looking back, not forwards.

@helenb. Well put and interesting thought. I agree. But there are legit reasons why people are not as obedient or patriotic as I remember in the 60s. It's a global marketplace and immigration has changed cultures, demographics and the kinds of societies that will work for the changing populations. What does treason mean when you're a citizen of the world, or barely ever live in your home country. Business is not patriotic. It's become a completely global market for manufacturers as well as consumers.

The word treason has been used loosely to attack the people you don't like .... The last time we were in a real war .... declared by congress .... was 1945 ..... If people are doing things that could be charged as treason IF we were at war ... other crimes need to be applied but not treason ....
