It's REALLY important to note that you get your rifle after you complete your mandatory service, so you've been vetted by that service and discipline. The cowboys don't make it, the delusional and violent don't make it. The UNDISCIPLINED don't make it. So even if you want your grandfather's Sturmgewehr after he passes, if you washed out during that service, you're not getting it. Background checks go beyond just criminal checks, and since every able-bodied man must serve, then it's a pretty intense vetting. AND THEN, the Swiss figured out that, without those bullets, the weapon loses a lot of it's potential lethality, so they strictly regulate the ammunition since there are so many firearms in the country. Being Swiss of course, many DO enjoy keeping their proficiency up at the range. So you request the ammunition for that purpose, then account for it afterwards, keeping in mind that those who are allowed ammunition have been through the discipline of the military. Plus, somehow, those that serve in Switzerland don't become gun fetishists themselves, nor anti-government nutcases.

No. The border towns in the Mexico-US border on US side are some the least crime in the whole country. That is despite being adjacent to the most dangerous cities on the other side of the border. The low cost of living in high crime neighborhoods is due to lower demand to live there, but high cost of living elsewhere forces hard choices. Also, gun control isn't gun banning, and social welfare systems aren't a substitute for self-responsibilty, but provide support to people working to get out of poverty. The thing is, criminals don't follow rules....the US is much more massive in landmass and population than Switzerland, plus it is not a homogenous country. Switzerland is mostly all white with people that follow a single culture, it is widely acknowledged that homogenous cultures have less crime overall because there isn't as many tensions within due to people generally following the same customs and having similar beliefs. The US is a mix of literally the entire world's customs and cultures, thus there is a lot of clashing going on. Clashing creates discontent and misunderstandings, and those can cause hate...hate can lead to crime. Not to mention the fact that when the US was first a country, criminals from all over Europe fled there for a new start and to escape the law...still happens too, with Irish, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and Russian gangs all over the US having been embedded for quite a long time. Add the wilderness of the US in, it made things more dangerous overall, so you can't just expect people to not have weapons to protect themselves...
@runenorderhaug76462 жыл бұрын
Except the problem with this arguement is that a lot of the countries that people in the US claim are homogenized actually have higher diversity rankings than many states in the US and in fact the US total. It is often much mroe based on sterotypes of that country rather than reality of that countries diversity because it isnt meant to be based on evidence. America is not the most hetrogenous country in the world and in fact many europeon countries have people coming from all over europe, asia, middle east, russia, and even different kinds of americans too. In fact switerland is both linguistically and racially more diverse than the united states based on the studies I could find by about 4% In additon, depending on the survey the reality is that many countries will not see ethnicity like many in the US do as well which means they may also report it as lower ethnicity because to them that other person is homogenous with them

You can be as free as you want, but only because everyone follows the rules for the benefit of society. There's almost no crime, littering, playing music after 10pm or tax evasion because it just doesn't cross your mind to try to break the rules! Now I live in the US, where the focus is on self and not society. Every child is taught to scream out loud, "I'm special! You can't tell me what to do because I'm exceptional! As a Swiss citizen who was trained in the army to properly use a gun and drink beer, I approve this message. The overwhelming majority of deaths by firearm here are suicide. Noone carries a gun but the ones who have to. Meaning almost exclusively cops. But you'll indeed see hundreds of guns, military full automatic assaut rifles too (the kind of ones you can't even get in the US ;) ), on happenings such as shown in this video, in train stations when soldiers are getting to their duty, during gun fairs, etc. It's very easy to get a license to own guns. And even easier to purchase one. But you're not allowed to carry it around. Basically, you may take it to the range, to get serviced or sold. You have to store and carry guns and ammo separated. Ammo for the military assault rifle is sold at the range only. And finally, you're only allowed to use guns in designated places such as public or private ranges. A few basic rules, that anyone who wants to own and use a gun should be able to respect. I wish you guys one day get this problem solved in the US. People believe gun control goes against their freedom, when in fact they're captive of lobbies that couldn't care less about their freedom or their life. They will actually be free when they will be able to shoot their guns as much as they want AND be confident their kids come back from school. Keep on informing them with this great show! Cheers from Switzerland.

So many comments here missed the part where "mandatory military training" is a requirement. They aren't just walking around with guns, that is a gun restriction measure and helps to curb the unhealthy gun relationship that ppl in the US have and failing that they still have to go through the regular requirements and waiting time to get one. It's very unlikely ppl in the US would want mandatory military service because they want guns without the responsibility of owning one.

Well the military service is actually not a requirement to own a gun - it is just where most men learn how to use them. Also bearing arms is not a private right in Switzerland, it's a public duty. They're reserve military personnel. What used to be an infatuation with guns in the US is now a disgusting self indulgence, completely unmoored from any social conscience or amenability to reason. It was not always thus: Virtually everything that is toxic in US gun culture now has taken root within the last fifty years or so. The Second Amendment was never about private rights either, but public duty. It's right there in the wording.

More Americans need to embrace reality instead of the reality TV show dubbed "politics" and slowly trying to restrict gun ownership will only cause people to buy them faster. A point I heard on the radio was that if you say that someone with a slight mental disorder would be denied. Instead of getting help they will not say a thing because seeking help means they lose their rights. Failure in parenting, outright lies in public schools, indoctrination in college, and the 24 hour news... I mean propaganda cycle. The list goes on. Now to this videos credit a reform I can think of would be to have a required class given by either the NG or any military branch in order to purchase a firearm. And those instructors would be able to tell the difference between excitement and evil. Every weekend 2 months and after that a 6 month waiting period before a gun could be bought. That's something I could wrap my head around. Because quite Franky there is not that many patient murderers out there, these individuals are mad now... and if you make it an 8 month process they will use something else. GUNS are not the problem sick individuals are the problem.

I think the fundamental thing is that they all respect and trust everybody to be responsible because somehow that's how they were brought up? Certainly, the key to all this is something that's not necessarily shown in this video. That's in the upbringing and values of the people since they were young. The problem in other countries, including the US, is the mentality of "I take care of my own, I don't care about others". So down the line, because there is no sense of community, no one can trust anyone and no one feels safe.
@sinalina5882 Жыл бұрын
I am Swiss and we also have rulebreakers and C U Next Tuesdays. But in general we are raised from a young age to respect guns. Men have to go the military for a period of time, where they are trained in how to operate guns/firearms correctly and it is taught that great responsibility comes with it. I remember when my Dad had his gun in the basement and I was strictly forbidden to touch it and was taught to respect guns and always treat them as if it was loaded. Also storing ammunition in a different place than the gun is the law, so burglars cannot just grab your gun and ammo. We are indeed raised to be responsible and shooting is seen as a sport, even for young people. There was one mass shooting in 2001 but we learned from it and you have to have a gun license and they are not randomly sold in supermarkets, there are also various background checks and if you have a record of ever being sectioned under the mental health act, you will never be allowed to have a gun and rightly so. You also have to go to special "gun stores" if you want to purchase a firearm and you need to have a purpose for it, like hunting or sport and if you are engaging in the sport, you have to prove it. When you stop participating in the sport, you have to return your weapon. You are not allowed to just own one just because you want to.

Part of the problem in America is gun rights are written into the Constitution, so it's been a right since the nation was founded. The Constitution explicitly names it as a fundamental right, right after free speech, it's literally 2nd in the the Bill of Rights. The thinking at the time, right after the revolution, was that the people should retain the power to overthrow their own government, should it become tyrannical. People still legitimately believe this, and they're paranoid that government restricting their guns is the beginning of tyrannical rule. Plus any attempts to restrict guns are limited because it's a constitutionally protected right. To restrict guns you'd have to pass a constitutional amendment, which would require 2/3 of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, which is currently a politically impossible bar. No one can get 2/3 of congress to agree on anything, let alone something as controversial as guns.

Pleeaase… The Swiss responsible attitude towards weapons is based first and foremost on civic responsibility and solidarity. There are clear regulations about the acquisition, possession and use of weapons, and people follow them. The mental health aspect was gradually included as an extra precaution. When something happens, the Swiss immediately take measures to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Also, the Swiss political system is so structured as to ensure that no lobby, cartel or political party may acquire undue influence on our government. That definitely makes a big difference!

"Mental health" is an interesting term. I can't speak for the "mental health" of Swiss people. But, the mental health of many Americans is not conducive to gun ownership. OTOH, if one lives in a place where the government seems to always work against one's interests it is understandable how one's mental health may suffer. [EDIT] Another thing I would be nervous about: especially in a place with a control-freak government, I would be concerned that, if "mental health" was a criterion for gun ownershop (or ANY liberty, but gun ownership may be the most acute) the moment someone uses a gun in a way or for a purpose not condoned by the Government (or anything else not condoned by the Government or even the political party currently in power) that person is quite liable to be branded "mentally ill". This is why even cigarette buds or chewing gums are usually thrown into the bin by the Swiss, even when nobody is around to check on them; it's the social conscience and responsibility. When you live by that rule, and everybody around does too, then America will be safe.

I think it has a lot to do with belief systems: here in Switzerland nobody (at least almost nobody) thinks he or she must defend their families. For that we have police forces. In the US it seems that many people think a gun makes them saver, despite the evidence that proves them wrong. What I find particularly sad, the majority of US citizens are reasonable people who want guns controlled and they are overruled by a gun-crazy minority. I had - for me as foreigner - a scary experience. I was on a business trip in Tennessee and spent a weekend in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. I wanted to go jogging and my landlord warned me not to leave the road. When asked „why not“, the answer was „trespassing“. When I didn’t understand, he explained to me, that a landowner could shoot me just because I entered his property. The US are such a beautiful county with so many nice people, plagued by a gun epidemic.

The police don't protect you in the US. I once lived next to a drug dealers house where they constantly threatened us. The police told us to stop calling them and move. The police here give traffic tickets so the local towns can collect money and they shoot innocent people and dogs. Look what happened in Texas with police response in the latest school shooting. I've been to Switzerland many times. Beautiful place, one of my favorite places I have been to.

I'm sure the US would have less of a feeling to protect oneself and loved ones if more police were directed in all areas to prevent/deter crime, perfect response time, no mass riots to loot and destroy everything, and prosecuters that actually prosecuted crimes and werent so politically controlled by political parties. Protecting oneself is a personal responsibility, not someone elses. And no, nobody would just shoot you the moment your toes touched on their land. Extreme exaggeration. They would be prosecuted to the max and hung out to dry. If you wandered on their land, and they told you to leave, and you refused, and approached threateningly, then the justification is likely warranted.

But the antis like having the skewed numbers to point at and tell the sheep "look at these high numbers"! What this tells me is since they know these numbers are a lie, their push is ultimately for control and not safety as they say. Same thing with the inflated mass shooting numbers. Most of that includes gang warfare or combatant on combatant shootings. To me a mass shooting is when one or more individuals target a group of innocent defenseless people to massacre. That's for sure! In Switzerland we are beyond lucky and privileged. Almost everything works out perfectly and we keep each other in check. There is precarity but it's not as rampant as in the US. Another important point is that our government is very balanced. At the top, they are 7 and they come from different parties from the left, the center and the right. I also fervently believe that those who have firearms stolen repeatedly should face consequences. While this sounds like victim blaming, the fact remains that people who steal guns are not law abusing gun owners and if you are unable to take proper precautions to prevent theft of firearms you are either too irresponsible to own them or complicit in providing firearms to criminals.

Couple things. Corporate America decided profits matter more than people, so now every household needs the income from two or more full time jobs just to get by so children got less supervision and learned less responsibility. The people with actual serious mental health issues have only one real choice available to them, which is to be deemed unemployable so that the government takes over their health care costs. As a result, they live well below the poverty level which probably helps to ensure they never really get better. In addition, the mental health system itself has little motivation to cure the patient because cured patients don't pay, long term care means long term government payments. Combine all those levels of frustration and people just want to lash out at somebody, and since they can't get at the politicians and corporate executives who have made the country the hellhole it is today, so they strike out in a way that makes everyone else know how much pain they are in. To whit, by killing children.

turns out when you teach people to respect the guns there are less issues, who would have thunk it.

Problem is that many gun owners in US would fail on following simple rules, respecting gun would be one of them.

@@olivergarcia2304 not formally, it's in my opinion a slang word but and it's kinda debated whether it can be used in the past tense or if its just reference to the sound something makes when it falls

GOP CPAC could have modeled themselves after Switzerland, but no, they went for Hungary to learn it’s authoritarian model of leadership. That tells us everything we need to know.

@neal cassady I have been to Switzerland several times and also met several Iraqi immigrants who made it their home there. No, I think if our legal immigration parameters were simpler instead of the mess it is now, illegal immigration would not be as much of an issue. Contrary to what Fox News says, Democrats are not for open borders, but for sensible immigration. Instead of protecting the borders, Trump administration made it worse, and only succeeded in restricting legal Immigration even more.
