If you work as an independent contractor, keep track of your hours; including ANYTHING your de facto employer directs you to do. You always had the right to sue for your rightful benefits - but NOW the government is actually addressing the problem. Hooray!!! I used to be very frustrated about the hands off approach of the state agency I used to work for. An Independent Contractor is someone who is incidental to the main purpose of the company (think of a Doctor's office, hiring a painter or computer tech for a limited time). How can responsible employers compete with crooks? The answer is government, those folks we hire to keep our world working. We need MORE IRS agents.

Unfortunately, as a half latina myself, I have to admit that within the oldschool latín people, there too racism is very much part of the culture, forgetting that half the country is black. History tells that Colombians themselves made difference between whiter (Spanish/European descendants) and darker less mixed people. Racism was just considered normal back in the days, blacks often had low paid jobs like servant, chauffeur. I hate this classes type of society, it's so unfair. I am glad our generation has laws that makes sure everyone is equal, but the old people have trouble adapting sometimes. I often had discussions with my grandmother, she was just raised in a different time.

Well... Technically, you can't get more latin than italian. The word latin comes from the Latini, which was a tribe in Italy. Italians (central italy, Roma and stuff) are the og latin people. They had their whole empire and stuff, but yeah, latin isn't latin american.

Lots of white people in the midwest think that Italians are not white. Having grown up Italian in the midwest there is no shortage of people who bullied me as a kid, calling my family criminals (mafia) and making fun of my last name because it sounds different. Italian is a weird one because if your name doesn't give you away you can pass but if a racist sees a hard to pronounce, very ethnic last name, than you get all the same old racist attitudes and treatment of any other minority.
