I'm 65 years old and White. I remember before I even went to school, one of my White friends visiting in our back yard who was around my age said, "Black people like fried chicken and watermelon." Even as a little kid, I knew that was a stereotype, although it confused me. My family had watermelon a *lot* during the summer, and we had fried chicken fairly often, and we all really liked both those foods a lot. I was sure we ate them both together at times. I thought he must have heard that from someone, probably an adult. I also thought, 'Don't most people like those foods a lot?' Later, I imagined my Dad invited a Black man to dinner, and we just happened to have that for dinner that night. Would our visitor be insulted because it was a stereotype? Would my parents change the dinner menu because of the stereotype, and if they did, what if they changed it to something he liked less? In college, I lived in a house with mostly Black people, and it never occured to me to ask anyone, "Do you like fried chicken?" Do you like watermelon?" If I'd thought to ask, I probably wouldn't have asked anyway. Asking that is like asking, "Hey, do you fit a benign racist stereotype?" Just recently, I saw this genius comedy sketch by Michael Che. It brought me back to that memory from about sixty years ago. Why Are Black People Stereotyped for Liking Chicken? - Michael Che kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2WQYpRjndyorq8

Here is the best test I use for myself that helps define bigotry and/or discrimination. You use and lay emphasis on black or white, dad etc too many times. Try rewrite this article and then step back and think about the article without any kind of blinker on. I know you sound like a great person but this might help first some definitions - if a word verb or adjective refers to discriminatory behavior or character then use only one of either of the two words discrimination or bigot (the full range, religion, class, race, kind, gender, age, height, weight , etc or whatever other so called differentiator). you may use qualifiers such as family or friends or stranger in place of dad, he etc otherwise replace every he or she or dad or other persons with just plain human - you may use I or me or my when refereing to yourself - it will not make grammatical sense, but if you do it right and then take a break and look at the article you should be able to see a slightly different picture. Try it
@technowey2 жыл бұрын
@@drift_ah1518 - Your claim that emphasizing Black, White, Dad, makes someone racist, doesn't make sense. I wrote what happened. I *did* think of my Dad doing that when I was a child, because he often invited people to dinner. Changing that to something else wouldn't be the truth. The people I wrote who were White were White. If I didn't make it clear the child who said that to me was White, the story wouldn't make sense. Doing what you recommended wouldn't paint a different picture. The picture I told you is 100% accurate. That's exactly what happened. If you think that I should change accurate descriptors in a true story, then you are irrational.

Jan. 6 is a DISTRACTION from the real issues... The reason? Democrats didn't care this much when they STORMED THE SENATE BUILDING during the Kavanaugh hearings... This isn't about security... it's POLITICAL.

@@Human12208 Jon Stewart used to joke about republicans and democrats equally. He definitely never treated Dems with kid gloves. I honestly don't think a democrat could handle at joke directed at them anymore without getting triggered and then wanting to get Trevor cancelled

The traffic segment is so much like "That's What's Up" from SNL --- and I love it. Therefore, you need a theme song!!!

Trevor, I agree with your point: The USA should change its name because not much is done to keep the states or even its people to try to be united. It should be called "Disunited Immigrant States of America". Practically, it is led by people who are immigrants by either choice or force. I don't know what this land's natives would call their country!!!

It used to be one n done. The moment we started having lobbyist and let's be honest about what they do and just call it bribes

I'm from Europe and not gonna lie: the 1st time I heard the term lobbying, many years ago, I seriously assumed that this is something done in secret since it's CLEARLY just another name for corruption. I was shocked to find out that this is done openly.

I get real “Make me laugh, half-breed!” vibes from the crowd whenever I watch The Daily Show. John Stewart never had to endure this. Hang in there, Trevor!
