I used to have a drinking problem. I've been sober for 3 years now. The majority of ads on my FB are ads for alcohol. I did everything that I could think of pleading with them to stop showing me those ads in the beginning of my sobriety. It never stopped. So I stopped using FB. The quality of my life has gotten much better...without Facebook.

I also stopped using fb. I noticed a link to major anxiety and knew I had to stop using it. And I posted daily and had high engagement on every post, which I dont think helped matters. Now I only check it once a month, if that. When I started focusing on my reality instead of other's and how they might see me, I became so much happier!!!

I'm literally a part of a small business that is seriously suffering due to this change. The only way we can get our name out there is through ads. Everyone knows about the big businesses already. But small businesses DEPEND on ads for people to know that they even exist! The advertising costs are rising drastically due to not knowing who to send ads to and it will be tough for some small businesses to survive because of it.

I am glad we are mocking/discussing the opt in vs opt out thing. Advertisers have backwards thinking. Businesses exist for people, not people for business. There is a fine line between service and manipulation. Thinking your existence is in everyone's best interest is narcissistic. Like a spoiled monarch saying, "it is better for everyone that everyone serve me."

"WALLE.e" is, IMHO, among the best Sci-Fi films ever - and my list has 2001 and Solaris (the original Russian version). What makes us human is our Earth. In the movie, the humans living in that fully artificial world developed a view of things that was also disconnected from what being human is - while the robot that spent his days packing trash became human. The idea of "educate our kids" is problematic because it implies we can teach the subconscious using reason. That can't be done. Susan Sontag predicted, in the 1980s (I think) that with the popularization of photography a rise of narcissism in society. What really impressed me when digital cameras appeared was how people wanted to see how they looked in the photo right after it was taken - including young kids.

@Tinnitus This is a comedy show, not The News. I am South African and live in rural South Africa where some homes do not yet have a toilet What I appreciate is that they are making people aware which is much more than what the big News companies are doing. What I love about the show is that, it introduces me to new trends and news allowing me to do my own research.

@@myclelo6153 Don't do it! I have an account, but haven't spent but about 30 minutes total so far this year on there and I don't miss it. You end up wasting your life away scrolling through dumb stuff and it actually hasn't helped me keep in contact with people. Texting works better. I use Facebook marketplace now, but that's it.

Thank you for being clear about the dangers facing young people. (Even though they won't have a liveable planet at age 30! Lol)

For plastic surgery, I feel like there should be a minimum age limit of where someone can ask a surgeon to change their appearance without adult permission.

Though it should be specified to only apply to "unnecessary" surgeries. If a kid has a disfigured face because of an accident or something, they shouldn't be at the mercy of someone else.

Your beauty filter segment is hitting very close to home. My naturally beautiful niece started altering her body between her junior and senior year of high school. Since then she said work done on her face, and when I see her on Instagram, it looks like a Jessica rabbit cartoon. It breaks my heart hearing these numbers. I’m so grateful this didn’t exist when I was in school which is hard enough. I don’t think teens of any age should be able to have plastic surgery done just because they want to and can afford to. Just like drinking and getting a drivers license. It’s equally disturbing that parents are allowing their daughters to do this.

Irony of the Body Dysmorphia news is that it's conveyed by news anchors who use all of the above: beauty filters, cosmetic surgeries, etc.

The issue with untargeted ads is that they have to pay for those ads. Targeted ads are more productive for the consumer and advertiser.

No one under 18 should be allowed to get plastic surgery; unless it's for medical or life saving reasons. This is becoming a mental sickness. No one is perfect and seeking perfection is a folly within itself. Everybody has something that makes them different and we should learn to love ourselves. The body changes. It is forever changing. Nothing is forever and society should realize this.
