As a social worker, I tell people that White America are the poorest and highest users of government aid. The fact that they racialized poverty to keep poor White America in cholehold. They continue vote against their own interesr for social capital. That is the voting block that needs to be empowered and educated the most for real change to happen. Poor Native, Black, Hispanic, and other communities aren't enough of the voting block, despite voting for their interest, to cause a dent. The federal poverty line is a joke. I've helped so many of my zero income clients transition to stability BUT, they are no part of the working poor. Don't qualify for any supports...they were given more help when homeless/zero income and cannot beat the system. It's a tragedy and hard for me to hold on to hope for them. I purchased Rev. Barber's book after watching this interview a couple weeks back and read it in a single sitting. In short, it was conversational, informative, and invigorating. After reading it I feel more optimistic about the future of this country which, in all honesty, surprises me given the current state of affairs. I think everyone should read this book and should also support the efforts of the Poor People's Campaign in whatever way is feasible for them. Please vote.

Fantastic interview Jon. Dr Barber is a force to be reckoned with and a beacon of light for years. Voters have the power. Congress refusing to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 for over 10 years is deplorable

I read an MLK biography a few years ago. That’s the first time I knew Dr. King spent his finals years addressing economic injustice. It radically shifted how I view the world. Can’t wait to read Rev. Barber’s book.

I love this man’s message and wish more white poor people would get on board with it. I feel like white people have been convinced that they have nothing in common with Black and Brown people and to never collaborate With them. This is a tactic by the the rich to keep the masses separate. If those in power make sure poor and middle class white people vote only out of fear then the rich stay in power and those with less continue to suffer. If white middle class and poor people can join together with Black and Brown people then this group together will have the power. I wish they knew this and pray someone can get the word out in a way people are open to hearing it.

Since Reagan, the Middle Class has disappeared, more and more falling into poverty. His "welfare queen" cliche was straight out of the Kochs' (billionaires) playbook. Then Bill Clinton, with his "new kind of Democrat," meaning Republican moved the Dems far to the right with his Omnibus Crime bill, written by Joe Biden, which was a racist, rightist act which made America have the highest number of incarcerated persons. Both corrupt parties work FOR the billionaires and corporations, not for We, The People.
@danielmennel45654 ай бұрын
The middle class is mostly a myth. What class you are part of is a function of how you make the money to pay your bills not how much you make. If you work for a living you are Working Class and far closer to being homeless than you are to being Wealthy.
@lizliz41864 ай бұрын
Not anymore. Both Trump and Biden are appealing to and saying working class. The challenge is that the working class typically doesn't vote (or donate millions) so there's no reason to help them. At the end of the day they help those who actually vote. Everyone needs to vote. Staying home doesn't make a point, it only gives your view away for free.

Liberal media contributes to this by constant repetition that poverty issues are racial issues. Ignoring poor white people resulted in them seeing liberals as college elites and led them straight to Fox and MAGA.

I absolutely LOVE that this man wrote this book because this has been a huge issue for a while that is growing. The rich want the poor to fight each other because otherwise they might be able to organize successfully and change things. I have no hope for civilization, but poor folks shouldn't be fighting each other.

I appreciate that he is a Reverend too. I am not religious but I can totally get behind religious affiliated people who aren’t afraid to speak the truth and promote this sort of activism. It’s not often, anymore, that religious people are featured who don’t spout off hatred and I think he seems like a wonderful example and role model. :)

You should be comparing like for like. The population of Australia is 26 million, which is the population of a few American cities. The population of America is over 315 million how can you compare the two. American wages and industry is far bigger than Australia.
@R0bobb1e3 ай бұрын
@@Raider577 The population disparity I agree with but in regard to wages and so on, I have no idea how you can say that. Yes, at the top, some people in America are paid better, but as for the lower end of the spectrum that is completely false. Granted, the cost of pretty much everything is more expensive, but that is no wages

@@R0bobb1e The lower end of the spectrum that is the minority. Are Aboriginals or the influx of African immigrants into Australia highly paid . America is a richer country by far look it up.
