Fun fact: The song "Gangnam Style" is actually about deepening and widening income and wealth inequality in and around the Gangnam district of South Korea. The general poise Psy has in the song (especially curling the upper lip and engaging in 'neck stretching') are a hyperbolic parody of wealthy subcultures in Gangnam, while the lyrics suggest a satire of extreme privilege while everyone else is ignored and implied to be left behind economically.

I'm Korean and have been a KPop fan since Seo Tae Ji. There are things I never knew about in this video. Btw, black rap was a huge influence on Kpop. I'm glad they gave Run DMC a shout out. I remember in the early 90's, there were a lot of NWA fans in Seoul. I also think a lot of the US servicemen stationed in Korea introduced Koreans to Western Hip Hop.

During Japan's occupation of Korea, Trap music, which blended Korean and Japanese traditional music with a little bit of western sounds, was huge and still has a big following in the older generations. Despite whatever is going on politically, Koreans have made amazing music regardless, singing through trauma and making beauty out of pain.

This five minute video is enough to get someone interested enough get curious and do more research, not detail every influence on the industry. However, if someone get interested enough, maybe they'll even look into the evolution of J-pop as well. It's also an interesting topic.

I knew about Seo Tai Ji and the Boys and the protest music during the dictatorship, the latter mostly because of K-dramas and other Korean TV shows (best way to learn a language is watch their TV shows), but the Ed Sullivan connection was one I did not know about. Those ladies must have been incredible. I need to hunt up videos of them.

Before K-Pop there was M-Pop (Malaysian Pop) in the 90s, but Malaysia is so underrated it didn't go internationally and in the early 2000 M-Pop just died out. M-Pop and K-Pop are actually the same thing.

The dictatorship wasnt loosened just because one got shot in 1979.. Koreans protested and fought back HARD for another 10 years to overthrow the next dictator. Took a lot of killing, torture and perseverance..

Great Job Ronny as an older Gen Stan it's great for newer Kpop stans and Non-Kpop fans to watch. I'm casual fans of Psy and BTS so I enjoy them but it's clear most Americans think that kpop is new and younger kids think BTS did everything first. Lastly I'd say the best way to really get into Korean music if you don't really get it is KDrama it feels more natural to like a KDrama ost you can connect a story to when you don't understand the culture yet. It's very similar to why we Anime fans like J-rock so much. But it might just be easy for me as I love soundtracks and scores.

Made, still the greatest album ever released. Every single night, I listen to songs from that album and GDragon's "Untitled 2014". Came into Kpop late in life, broke my femur, went into rehab, was on bed rest for many months. Sister introduced me to kdrama, Watched Scarlett Heart Ryeo, googled Lee Joongi, saw him do a cover of Ringa Linga(Taeyang of BigBang solo),, the world suddenly flipped. Had a LOT of time to research new to me music, still love my Bigbang, still love Lee Joongi, still love Scarlett Heart Ryeo. Differently than lots of other Kpop fans, I grew up in Japan, so Kpop has a nostalgic feel for me. J dramas are essentially what I watched on tv, during my elementary and middle school years. I don't remember English dubbed tv back then, instead I watched long running Japanese tv dramas about volleyball teams, flight attendants and office romances. memories!!!!!
