I went to the University of SC (Go Gamecocks) in Columbia and was there in the early 80s when Hootie & the Blowfish was just a great local upcoming band. The guy in the bathtub is on the top of the former Yesterday's Bar & Restaurant that was a anchor of 5 points for decades. Spent many weekends there as 5 points was walking distance from the USC campus. Sadly the restaurant that anchored 5 points succumbed to the pandemic as they couldn't seem to transition to curbside takeout enough to make it through. There's some great stuff to see on a walk around campus if you get back there. If you see the brick wall around the center of campus (called the horseshoe) you will see black areas on it. That comes from the fires set around Columbia as Sherman marched through the area. There's some walking trails on the otherside of the river that takes you to the rocky outcropping where Sherman camped. I'm currently living in Florence, SC... the home of one of the worst Civil War POW camps. The Florence stockade is now a park with walking trails you can walk through. Nearby is the National Cemetary where many of those Union Soldiers were buried... including a woman. She was discovered among the prisoners and was dressed a a soldier so she could be with her husband. After she was discovered the ladies of Florence took her in. She helped to nurse other soldiers until she too died and was buried along with the other Union Soldiers. Her name was Florina Budwin. Florence however is named for the daughter of the man that built the railroad through it. Because Florence was built at the crux of 3 railroads it was defended fiercely and never fell ...even turning away some of Sherman's troops on his way to Columbia. It was his drive through Columbia to Atlanta that caused the confederates to close the despised Andersonville prison there... and most of those prisoners (those that could walk including Florina) would be sent to Florence until the end of the war. I just love the circles of history. A bigger circle for you... Because of all this the area was left financially devastated and there was a big migration of people from the southeastern coastal plain of SC (Starting around the 1880s to the 1950s)... to Alabama and Florida that would eventually populate them and help build tourism there... including Disney.

Ice storm Izzy? Since when did they start naming ice storms? I thought that was only for tropical storms and hurricanes? Weird. We have ice storms her all the time and we just call it "winter". lol. That storm came through here in the upper Midwest on Friday and dropped between 2-10 inches of snow depending where you measure and made the roads extremely icy. I had no idea the storm had a name. They usually don't around here. I guess when a storm hits a part of the country that doesn't usually get winter storms.... those states feel the need to name it, maybe? Not sure. Stay safe Adam.

How often does a person get to ring a gong?! How cool is that?! HOOTIE! Who knew they had a monument? And a street? I don't think that building really had a crack. It looked like art to me. They made use of the fact that the back of the building is taller than the rest. But who knows?
