Adam, when I lived in the south I remember having that mindset about icy roads. Then I moved to Michigan, and after 20 years here, I can tell you those roads are not very dangerous. You will be okay brother.
@KirkandRA
@KirkandRA 2 жыл бұрын
But in the south, most municipalities do not have salt trucks and plows. That being said..the roads look pretty clear but you never can tell

I live in the mountains of West Virginia and snow and icy roads are just a part of life….we lived in Michigan in the 50s and remember the snow there was pretty bad ..we were in the Detroit area.
@MichaelDelaware
@MichaelDelaware 2 жыл бұрын
@@KirkandRA True, but those roads don't look bad. Also, here in Michigan, every so many years we have winters where the city runs out of funds for the year, and so we don't get salt or sand for the last part of winter.

Hey, I have lived in Greensboro for almost 20 years now. It's crazy how much we have grown. These small towns like Stokesdale are up and coming with expensive housing. If you come back in five years I imagine the downtown area will be exploding with new businesses. We love the Greensboro area as it still has a small town feel unlike Raleigh and Charlotte areas. We want growth, but we do not want to become another area where everyone flocks to and ruins our charm. That said, we do have a lot to offer and hope people will travel to this area and check out our quaint towns. By the way, it has snowed for three weekends in a row. We hardly get this much snow in the winter season let alone in one month. Later in the week it will warm again thankfully. Hope you enjoyed your trip!

You are exactly right.From someone who was born and raised in Asheville .It's ruined.Wrong type of growth.
@laurapearson3258
@laurapearson3258 2 жыл бұрын
@@andreamills5852 yes! We love Ashville, but it's a shame to see what has happened there. When a town becomes too expensive and crowded for its residents to enjoy, it's time to rethink planning. I know a few people who have moved for various reasons, but no one really wanted to move, but circumstances there made it impossible to live there.

Woo Hoo, Adam, Love this too! I forgot to mention to ya earlier that Rutherford County, NC was also a filming location for Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis back in 1993, I think...Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, and parts of Asheville. Also, parts of Dirty Dancing were filmed here. Lots of good stuff here in this large but rural county in the NC Foothill mountains. As always, lots of thumbs up on this one!

This Train in the Window (a.k.a."GRAMPS") These cars were built in the 1908 to 1912 era as standard gauge tank cars with a capacity of 6000 Gallons and were mounted on Archbar Trucks. In the mid to late 1920's some of these cars were converted to Narrow Gauge by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. These cars were named after Lafayette "Gramps" Hughes who owned a small refinery in Alamosa Colorado and refined oil from the oil fields above Chama, New Mexico. During these years Mr. Hughes grandchildren wanted to know which cars belonged to their 'gramps', so he leased 20 cars and had them stenciled 'GRAMPS", and that's how they acquired the naming.

Enjoyed as always. Maybe one day you will head back into Western North Carolina. Watching this vlog reminds me of the similarity of our little town of Canton NC.. It’s a paper mill town that dates back into 1890’s and still operational today. The buildings are pretty much original in architecture. The beauty of our town is location. Hour drive you can either be Blue ridge parkway, or great Smokey mountains.. love the vlog, always exciting when you come to our state and much appreciated that you take time to document the little towns. Stay safe on your travels.

Across from the motel: a "motor court" part of the same motel. It looks like it's from the 1920s. Lots of old motels had garages for your car. One still in business is the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, NM. We had one near where we lived, attached to a barbeque restaurant. While my parents waited for barbecue or talked after we ate, I played in the playground of the motel in front of the rooms and garages.

The Kendall Oil "peace sign" was actually for 2 or 2,000 miles between oil changes, a big deal in my Dad's day. This was before synthetic and better blended motor oil. Yesterday, there was a gas pump at Shell with a photo of tags. Those went inside the glass part of the pump. Gas flowed up into that area and you would stop cranking the handle (on the pump itself) when the right number of gallons was on the level (like a measuring cup). Gravity would let the gas down into the nozzle. Also, the second pump was Ethyl rather than Premium. My Dad was a mechanic and full of tidbits on how things worked. I'm glad how you listen to your parents stories, too.

In icy/wintry weather: Go slow, don't slam on the gas or slam on the brakes. If you hit black ice, don't slam on the brakes and hold your foot there because you'll crash. Once you feel yourself sliding, don't lock up your hold on the steering wheel(to the best of your ability), tap the brake, look to where you want to go and steer towards it. Then give the car a bit of gas (again, don't slam on the gas and not a lot) and try to re-centre the car.
