What Steve Young is trying to say is that most QB’s are over paid in the NFL. Only Patrick Mahomes & Josh Allen have proven that their skill sets are worthy of being paid 50+ million per year, as they can single handily raise the level of talent around them whatever that might be, to compete for a championship! Dallas paying Dak Prescott 60 million a year is insane, and owners need to realize that their 2nd or 3rd tier QB’s aren’t going to take any other team to a championship, so they need to move on and try to find the next guy if they won’t take less. The QB salaries will be the downfall of the league. Sam Darnold is having success because of coaching and the team had top offensive weapons, and they were active in FA on the defensive side of the ball because they aren’t paying big time money to the QB!

That’s exactly right. However, it is a dilemma for GM’s. Somebody is/was gonna pay the Brock’s and Dak’s of the world, and they will move on. Few teams have their next “guy” waiting in the wings, and finding a good (not even great) QB you can win with is hard, unpredictable and can take years. Just ask the Bears, Jets, Browns, and a bunch of other franchises. As a result, it’s pretty hard to let a good QB go……..because with a bottom-half QB you are a serial losing franchise.

Certainly a valid point but as others have said not just Mahomes and Allen are worth top tier or close money. Even though he hasn't performed well in the playoffs Lemar Jackson is phenomenally talented. Burrow and Herbert are great, strong passers. But yeah, Purdy isn't on that level. The only reason Brock Purdy "looked good" last year and the year before, is because he had a healthy o-line, a star-studded backfield -- CMC,Deebo,Aiyuk,Kittles,etc. So despite his mistakes such as underthrowing or overthrowing, he was essentially rescued by his pro-bowl peers! Now that the same arsenal of talent he can go to arent healthy and he is left with mediocre or worse players, me oh my was this dude exposed! An A-list QB can work with whoever is at his periphery. Passes are on point not over/under not erratic and certainly not desperate. Yes Brock can throw or run -- he is a good player. Not an elite QB the likes of Josh Allen or P. Mahomes. People who think he is the second coming of Joe Cool #16 or Wonder Boy Steve #8 should lay off the crackpipe. What would it take to get Joe Burrow? He is what the Niners need imho.

I can not get on board with anyone discussing the 9ers and not talking about that Oline. I mean how many years are we going to watch the 9ers blow 4th-quarter leads and not address the fact that, that is a defensive problem. The only way for the Niners to win is in Blowout games? Offensive line is the same. The problem is Purdy is too short. He can't throw over the middle well. It handicapped Deebo and Kittle short slant route. He also doesn't have arm strength to stretch the defense. I think the Vikings will offer a fair contract for Darnold. If other teams want to pay more he'll be gone. I think what's becoming crystal clear is Kevin O'Connell's expertise with developing quarterbacks within his system which is potentially a gold mine for the Vikings in so many ways.

Purdy has made less than 3m in three years. His average earnings is going to much less than almost any other qb. Even if he is overpaid on this contract he deserves it to make up for massive underpayment over the last 3 years.

Steve is a little jealous of Purdy and would hate to see him do anything he didn't do for the Niners. Purdy is going to get paid and he will also be the Niners QB1 for the seeable future. We need to be talking about Niners O-line and special teams. LT Trent Williams has been out almost half the season. I think Niners go hard this coming off-season with the O-line. Purdy will sign a 6 or 7 year deal with the Niners and finally put to bed all the BS! Looking forward to the future.... Bang Bang LFGoooo!

@jamesparker31893 күн бұрын
Purdy has some elite qualities, but he also has an Achilles heal, being his small hands that cannot handle a wet ball. Than there is his weak arm. I like Purdy. I like him a lot, but not enough to make him the franchise quarterback. I would instead trade him for a first round pick and wish him luck. Then I would look to the draft for a quarterback or two that the team can build around that do not have Purdy's small hands and weak arm. I would also trade away all my seasoned players for draft picks that are into their second tier of contracts. I would also get rid of the GM and head coach. Why, for several reasons, but the primary reason is them trading away three first round picks for an unproven and very raw rookie prospect from a small school. Who does that? Not anyone with a football brain for talent and for rebuilding a club. These two are way under qualified, as evidenced by that decision,.

Yes Purdy has regressed but a lot of that can be attributed to the injuries to some key offensive players, the drop in performance of his offensive line and lastly the obvious fact that teams have now learned how to defend against the same offensivive scheme that Shanahan has been calling for 2.5 years. Purdy should not get that massive contract that would put him in the top three QB pay wise. Give him a well deserved increase and put a clause in it that based on his and the teams future performance it will be negociated to make him one of the highest payed QB's. Use the saved money to get better players especially on the offensive line and the defensiv backfield.
@stevenbarnes52208 күн бұрын
Big money for Brock isn't necessary 1/2 down and 1/2 down the road if he is successful. That will give money for a strong offensive line and a couple of fast breakaway receivers to spread out the defense and open up the throwing lanes.

No man. Be real. Purdy is too short. He can't throw over the middle well. He wouldn't able to throw slant routes to Kittle and Deebo so he would be worse with Rice slant route. He also doesn't have arm strength. After 3 years, defenses have figured him out. They tighten up the intermediate route 10-20 yards out routes. That's why receivers are not open and he ended up holding the ball too long.
@lmcc00726 күн бұрын
If Purdy is smart he’ll settle for $40 million so the team can add impact players. Unfortunately, the players union will probably pressure him to NOT take that sort of deal. As it is Bosa, Kittle, Deebo, Aiyuk, CMC, and Williams are all making big money as well. You can’t pay everyone top wages.

I remember Steve Young a guy who took Joe Montana's job. Steve Young had the highest QB ratings during the season and then flipped the script and had the lowest ratings during the playoffs. Steve did get the 49ers a Superbowl. I remember they brought in Dion Sanders to defend against Michael Irvin of Dallas to finally win an NFC championship. The team was extremely over the cap and had to pay the price in future years. The 1st year Young took the reigns I knew he would lose to Dallas in The NFC championship. He threw intercepts during critical drives and could not create like Joe Montana did during the amazing CATCH NFC Championship. Now Steve Young is kicking poor Brock Purdy in the teeth. The team has lost a premier receiver in Brandon Aiyuk 1342 yards, in 2023 and Christian McCaffrey 2,023 yards both players put up stellar yards in 2023. That's 3,300 yards in production. That is like Terry Bradshaw losing Lynn Swan and Franco Harris or Montana losing Rice and Roger Craig. Steve Young is always that knife you know someone is stabbing in your back!

Sure, don’t pay the guy who’s been in the SB and won the championship game, but give $60M to Prescott who never had a decent run in the playoffs, $55M to Lawrence who has one playoff win total, or $53M to Tua with his 0-1 playoff record. Purdy deserves his big contract, with his carrier NFL passer rating of 104.9
@surfingcavachon7 күн бұрын
Terrible logic. You don't pay someone for their past. You pay them for what they are going to do. And you don't make the same mistake as others, you learn from them. He has a 65.3 QBR in 2024

All the $60million guys now haven’t done sh!t in the playoffs but got that $. Purdy deserves his pay day just like the other players have gotten.
@vincechan4552 күн бұрын
Let me spell it out very clearly. If the 49ers are going to pay Purdy top dollar, then they will have to trade two or more of the following guys: Deebo, Aiyuk, Kittles, or Bosa. They can't pay everyone based on the salary cap. Secondly, they need to open their damn eyes and see what happened this year. Even when they are all healthy and playing together, it's no guarantee that they can make the playoffs or even win a Super Bowl.

You pay a young QB who's trajectory is going up, not going down. Purdy has a great first year. He had a really good second year. He's now having a bad third year and we're talking about paying him $60M a year? Doesn't make much sense at all, regardless of the talent, or lack of, that is around him. Some of his worst plays didn't come with pressure closing in. The ball slipping out of his hand in the rain and snow had nothing to do with pressure. He just has small hands and can't handle a wet football. The final INT in last week's game had nothing to do with pressure or the receiver. He made a horrible decision combined with a horrible throw. That is not a guy you pay big money to. Purdy nearly went undrafted and did well in this system. No reason to think that they can't do that again with another player. There isn't anything special about Purdy. He's not the biggest. He doesn't have a great arm. He's not the most mobile. He doesn't get through his progressions. So what makes him this great player? The system, thus a system QB.
@wreckim8 күн бұрын
If you don't pay Purdy, Purdy will end up on another team and win playoff games and likely a Super Bowl or two, with that team. Purdy is a special player, and he is extremely young still for having accomplished so much already. He's not perfect, no. But he's not Dak. Let's get real.
@ManovSteelo3 күн бұрын
Similar to when Bryce Young was at Alabama, Purdy is at his best with better (read: superior) talent; he's proven he's not a guy who can carry a team offensively by creating something out of nothing. He def should get Paid -- insofar as that means awarding him a contract that far exceeds what he's earning per his seventh-round scale -- but to Steve Young's point, paying Purdy ridiculously (Tua contract; Trevor contract) will prevent SF from acquiring the top-shelf talent that will allow Purdy to play at his best. A Daniel Jones- or Derek Carr-level deal (4yrs, ~$160M) with partial guarantee(s) would speak to rewarding him on merit of what he has done over his time as a starter, but reflective of the fact that he isn't playing like a top-level QB and so should not be paid like one. At the end of the day, if a team is smart about the power they wield and don't succumb to public pressure, they can make it very easy to keep a QB under its thumb for increasingly long periods of time and force the player to prove his excellence consistently before shelling out the big bucks. So guys like Tua, Trevor, and even Dak don't necessarily get their current contract extensions that, so far, they have yet to live up to, based on their play this season, and guys like Jones don't even sniff their contract money, in the first place.
