I've owned pretty much every popular type of guitar at one point, but my number one for the last five years has been a PRS. But it's all up to taste - What music you play, your influences, aesthetics, etc. No harm in having a different opinion and you've done that being completely fair by pointing out the positives and highlighting the quality. Thanks Dave, from a PRS fan ❤

Had a shot of my pals for a week. The plastic nobs on the tuners and the plastic truss road cover ruined the headstock for me, made it look cheap and spoiled the rest of the beauty of the guitar. Fit and finish was on point, fret work was lovely. Pups were very uninspiring. I've always felt the same with PRS, never connected with them. Always wanted to buy one as I think Paul Reed Smith is one of the coolest guys in guitar world. I nearly bought the PRS se Zach Myers 594 in blue as it looked beautiful, apart from the plastic tuner nobs. Felt amazing to play and was stunningly beautiful in person but sadly I just can't get into humbuckers 😢😢. Another thing with PRS for me is they are way to pricey. My mate bought one for about £1400-£1600 (think it was a McCarty) and it had the 85/15's that you get on the SE range. I'm sorry but if I'm paying £1400+ for a guitar, I'm expecting premium pups. Love your vids Dave. Good honest reviews then a full on concert of amazing guitar playing. Always watch your outro jam with the captain on Andertons. Always chuckle when the Captain tries to follow you then he's like "i can't follow that, you take it away again". Hope we are going to get to see a Pete and Dave jam soon 🤞🤞🙏🙏

i would really love for you to get ahold of a sterling by music man cutlass. i've loved strats, got a cutlass and thought it was where fender needed to go with the strat (makes sense since leo was at music man after fender). i got a silver sky from my wife last year and while i love it, the neck is "bigger" then what i would usually want, but that cutlass neck is just that bit thinner at the nut and slimmer, couple that with a slight soft V, its perfect (for me)

I'm more of a LP guy and I've never cared for any PRS models really. But when the McCarty .594 singlecut came out in the SE line, I bought a standard in vintage cherry. It needed some upgrades to the tuners and electronics, but now it's found a place in my collection for good. The pickups are excellent, and the guitar does stuff the others just can't. I can recommend it without hesitation.

Sounds great. But I hear you on feel. New fenders and PRSs are the same for me, just don’t feel like the old ones, they just don’t feel like a handmade instrument, even the custom shop. Neck shape doesn’t fit the hand. And what’s with new guitars feeling like they’re coated in plastic. Once you’ve played an original 50s or 60s or even 70s fender it’s just hard to swallow what they’re putting out these days. Now the high quality Japanese builds on the other hand…

I think, you are biased against PRS guitars from previous experiences. So if you really want to review them you should do it blindfolded and compare it to other strat like guitars (not your own guitars though). I think only then you can do a "fair" comparison.

I love the SE Silver Sky! I think the pickups have a chimey top end that fender's don't have. I really don't like the grey plastic tuners and truss cover. The se trem is better without having to put a tiny spring in the hole. And putting thread tape on a fender trem arm works! I personally would buy three of the se silver sky's over an expensive usa fender. The squires and the mexican strats are just as good for much less money than usa.

In other words, you hate it, but you're being polite. The neck just look chunky in your fingers. Why continue putting knobs in the path of a picking hand. Anyway. beautiful sound as always. I'm partial to slow melodic and brighter tones, so this session was pleasant to me. I'm in my 6th month as a beginner (59 year old) guitar player. I wish you would give some tips on legato and getting the full sound from less picking. Is that possible? Is it lots to do with amp settings? thanks Dave, across the pond.

Question, would you choose a bullet for a Sonic Squire over this? PRS have a very distinct tone. Which I love with some songs, but for my general liking, I would prefer to have a Gibson (Epiphone) or a Fender(Squire). PRS lies in a weird middle position which I do not like. I think the only two bands that it really fits with is Breaking Benjamin and whatever band Mark Tremontii is playing in :) And then yeah, Santana. Again, they are great, but would not be my #1, perhaps a great #3, or #4. If I had all the cash in the world.

I'm a lefty. I've managed to find a pre 2000 lefty Custom 22, and a 2010 Ltd edition lefty McCarty. Both are brilliantly constructed. But the McCarty really didn't engage me. TBH the Custom 22 is, to me, a far better guitar. But neither make / made me as keen to play them as much as, for example, a far more available Les Paul or (especially Tele) I've recently traded the McCarty for a AV II '51 Tele (plus other stuff) Hope whoever has it loves it more than I did.

I really like Prs, and have a fender parts caster, I genuinely don’t like silver sky’s because for me all the finishes are quite boring, the tuners I hate the look of and also the truss rod but being plastic aswell, and I’m like fair enough with them being plastic for se guitars at £600 odd but for Prs silver sky guitars that are £2000+ there is absolutely no excuse for them to be plastic

@hjalmarconte492610 ай бұрын
PS Just to add that, to me, the silver Sky does not feel like a Strat - my overall feeling is that the headstock and the strings spaced up on two sides (like a PRS or Les Paul) create a different string tension and convey a different feeling compared to the feeling given by a Strat. I might be completely wrong about that, or this could be a sort of strange placebo effect, but that was the feeling I got when I (extensively) tried one. And I did not like it ...

Everything you said mirrors exactly my experience with the Silver Sky and with PRS guitars in general. I do not doubt that they are quality instruments, with great finish/tops etc., but I have never been able to connect with them. And The Silver Sky gives me the creep ... the combination of a traditional stat body with a PRS neck looks like a Frankenstain guitar ... and that is just like ... well ... my opinion man ...

Such a gracious review. You are a true gentleman. You took a guitar you don't even like yet celebrated its virtues and explained all the reasons so many players love PRS guitars. I actually agree with you. I don't like PRS guitars. I don't connect with them and find them rather ugly, despite their exceptional fit and finish. PRS even managed to make the classic, beautiful Stratocaster ugly. Please don't remind me that John Mayer actually took the time to flip the headstock. It's still ugly. And that cutaway carve... ugh.

So, we won't be seeing any sponsor deals with PRS any time soon Dave? Ha, ha I have heard from other players who say the guitars are superb in terms of build quality, but lack a certain spirit, or 'vibe' as you say. Well that is what options, and choices is about eh? One of my favorite guitars is a Stirling Cutlas, which is the cheap line of Music Man, it is better than most Fender Strats I have played, it is weird, our personal tastes.

Is a matter of personal taste, but for me the big neck is one aspect I really really like abut the silver sky. Both, SE and core. As comparison I really really dislike the fender Modern C, just cant click with it, too thin.

Seen loads of these around the local music scene recently, sure it’s a great option for someone after a decent strat style guitar for a decent price but honestly I’d take any fender or even a squier classic vibe over it any day. Pickups do not have any high end ring to them in my opinion, not a great guitar for leads or high gain, it gets lost in the mix and I’m a lead heavy player so it just isn’t a viable option for me, I can understand for someone who’s going to slam out a few chords that needs something to get the job done but still in that situation I’d grab a player series or something. Could just be some fender bias from me but my fender Strats are the only guitars I haven’t sold off besides my first squier and a Harley Benton tele that I have that I’d still rather use over the silver sky as it’s a great guitar with a lot more character. Big comment but that’s my opinion, probably works for chordsy players but if you’re after some high gain screaming leads or versatility this just isn’t the right guitar. Not a fan

at first glance it amazes you just how good the guitar is. But there is this problem - where does it fit in? whats it identity in music genres - a soul, blues, pop music like john mayer YES, and ofcourse a great students guitar or first guitar.

Honesty wins. Every time. Here's a chalk to cheese comparison for you (being that the PRS is really a variation of the Stratocaster theme...): I gave the Gibson Les Paul a fair chance. Had one for four and a half years, and I really(!) tried to fall in love with it. And it was not(!) a bad guitar (once I'd replaced the horrid Kluson's with Grover Rotomatics; that was really the only fault with that guitar). But, I could never make it sound like me. Only the Strat could, so that's the one I've kept. That was a long time ago now; roughly 30 years; and every time I've picked up a Les Paul since, I've instantly been reminded of why I got rid of mine. I would hazard a guess, that that's sort of how you feel regarding this Paul Reep Smith... If it doesn't click, it doesn't click. Even if it is a terrific guitar in all measurable ways possible. Yeah, you compared double glouchester to Jarlsberg, whilst I was comparing the cliffs of Dover to Gauda... So... Anyway, back to your regular scheduled programme 😀
