Freiberger, I have to come clean. Having followed you, somewhat begrudgingly, for years all the way back to Hot Rod Magazine, and then on the Discovery Channel, I never was able to give you the credit I now find you deserved. I always liked your co-hosts (Lucky, Finnegan, Chapelle, and especially Steve Dulcich) better on screen. After the ending of all the tv series, and watching what you are doing now, you have definitely earned the respect and admiration of an old old hot rodder. I am totally into what you are doing, exploring all these historical places, and telling their stories. Many of these may never be able to be shown again. These series bring up a lot of forgotten memories of when I was a little kid in the 50's and early 60's, being dragged across country on vacation from Alabama to California by my parents along Route 66. Thank you so much for what you're doing, and for converting an old curmudgeon to appreciating what you young whippersnappers are doing. Kudo's Sir! I always look forward to your YT videos. I hope you are safe in the CA fires these days. All the best David!!

David I would like to say thank you. For the last 20 years I have been working on Bugatti's, Talbots, Delahaye's and many more old cars for very wealthy people. Somewhere along the way I lost my passion for vintage cars. After closing my shop I found your Motor trend shows and now your KZbin channel. Because of you and the shows I have also found my passion for old cars again. Got myself a 1966 Ford Fairlane wagon and getting it running to go on some road trips. So once again Thank you very much. My wife said to tell you thank you also. She enjoys watching your shows also.

Hey David, I went for a bit of a road trip in central NSW when I came across an old Holden and Chevrolet dealership. The 1950’s Chevrolet letting caught my attention then when I looked inside there was a brand new ‘64 Bel Air sedan and four ‘64 EH Holdens. There were spares behind the counter and vintage mag wheels and tyres in the shop next door. Apparently the owner closed the doors and left everything as it was. Really cool signage everywhere.

David, I've been following you for awhile and there was always an exhibition of your passion for automotive history which is greatly appreciated. But there were also hints of your passion for the underlying pop culture and Americana history that automotive nostalgia is a part of. It is great to finally see you able to have that part of you on full display for all of us to enjoy and learn from. One thing that you may not be aware of is the Ford truck at 13:47 is a not-so-common option (I wouldn't call it rare because I've seen a few myself) of the Super Camper Special which was available from '73-'79 as a single cab 2WD F-350. The distinction is the spare tire compartment forward of the rear wheel on the passenger side. The reason for this is that they stretched the wheelbase from the standard 133" to 140" to give it better handling and towing capability thus reducing the area available under the bed for a spare tire. This example is probably a mid '76 to '79 as it sports a 460 (w/AC!) and not the standard 360/390 of the '73-'76 version. Although, the 460 was an option starting in '73. Keep up the great videos!

That old "SURPLUS" sign in Pasadena once belonged to C&H Surplus. They would buy up all the old cold war-era lab and test equipment from the surrounding aerospace industry and sell it to anybody who walked through their front door. Old oscilloscopes, glass lab equipment, and a bunch of stuff I couldn't even identify. As a design student, I spent many hours there looking for inspiration for my school projects. Still have some cool old aircraft instruments and military gadgets from there.

Hey Dave Had a 83 square body 3/4 ton when i was 18. Bought it with 3 inch lift had stock tire size on it but came with 33’’ tires and wheels. Had a 350 with 4 barrel quadrajet 4 speed first time i drove it what a dog. Terrible gas mileage no power went right to the parts store bought long tube headers performance mufflers and exhaust tubing. Eliminated the emissions spent days just getting the rusty manifolds off. With just a little compressor and cut off wheel in late fall upstate NY ya it was cold lol!! Finally got headers on took some old wire ran it where i wanted exhaust tubes to run. Took that to my local muffler shop had him bend my exhaust tubes. Got exhaust on then the 33’s truck was a animal after. MPG went from 10 to 18mpg highway. Couldn’t help but think about how stupid emissions were back then. Gained Almost twice the mileage so how was the emissions actually helping anything. Burning less fuel has to be better right less polluting lol!! Idk as always great video love watching just about anything u do. O ya im a car guy truck guy bike guy ATV guy. But my biggest passion is probably snowmobiles but idk really love my Camaros to lol!! Iv been on snowmobiles since i was 5 im now 46. Raced snowmobiles 15 years Snow cross and pro cross country with many wins and championships. My first car was a 79 Camaro white with 450 HP 358 with muncie rock crusher 4 speed 4:10 12 bolt rear end. Man i loved that car was only 16 had the fastest car at school maybe in 3 countries never got beat lol!! Unfortunately got into some trouble at age 18 lost my license then my father talked me into selling camaro. One of the biggest regrets of my life.

When my daughter was living in Pasadena going to Caltech, we drove that route many times. One memory of Newberry Springs… my wife and I got caught in a sandstorm that had traffic stopped on 40 for a while. I had to replace the windshield and headlamps on her 2014 Grand Cherokee when we got back to Texas, and I spent half a day changing filters and vacuuming all the sand out of the engine bay when we got to our daughter’s place in Pasadena. No long term effects, the Jeep is still going strong 6 years later at 160,000 miles. I just remember that for the rest of that trip, I had to make sure we were never driving toward the sun, because it looked like the windshield was covered in thick fog. Heading east, we always started late and drove into the evening… until oncoming headlights were almost as bad as the sun.

In 2015 my dad and I did The Great Race in his '63 Vette SWC. The course that year was Route 66, from St. Louis to the Santa Monica Pier. Neither of us had done a road rally like that before. Driving by spreadsheet is surprisingly fun, but what was more fun was taking the transmission out of it 2x (maybe 3?) because it kept lunching throwout bearings for whatever reason. Seeing these sights brought back some great memories. That was nearly a decade ago, my goodness. Where does the time go? Thanks Freiburger.

They deliberately dont put paper in pumps so you go in a buy stuff just like i noticed places dont have price check anymore like walmart thinking you will just buy it now and not worry everyone in a go go go mood anymore its crazy . Just like we see all these towns are closed now and everyone being pushed into living in cities and containing us in certain areas but there are few of us left that need to keep going living the old way repairing our own stuff and making ideas and things work. Thank you for videos of these cool places cant wait to go see my self .

Thanks Dave, my family took Rt66 out to Fontana Ca. to visit dads two older sisters. The year July 1966, the car was a brand new 1966 Chevrolet Impala, 283 2bbl, and a Powerglide(air-conditioned). The stop in Needles was at 9am .Dad opened his door and said, "Anybody want to get out", us 3 kids said NO! I know there was no blastfurace nearby, but it sure felt like it! We got to Fontana via the Cajon Pass and on to the relatives! Anyway, again, thanks for jogging my memories of that trip, lots of great memories from when I was 15 years old!

@RaceCar21 My first job (at 12) was working at my dad's Gas Station in the early to mid-70s. A gallon of gas and a pack of cigarettes were the same price (around $0.50 each). I don't remember very many CC purchases in those days...no need for a card when you can buy gas and smokes for pocket change.

Funny how a whole genre of cars was developed to pick up travelers and their luggage at the train station and take them to local hotels. The birth of the "Station wagon" and the name stuck to today. The Brits call them "Estate wagons". I like station wagons. When on a photo work shop in the 90s every one went from the Kelso sand dunes down to Amboy for a burger and a malt. We to tired of heating up burritos on the engines of our cars. Told the Highway Patrol cop in Amboy that we saw a small private plane land on the road adjacent to the dunes and taxi over to a mine. The cop investigated and turns out it was a drug smuggling operation. Fly low over the border and drop the stuff in the deserts. That must explain the late night gun shots we heard. Perhaps someone unhappy with the deal? This is why it's a good idea to take a gun with you when poking around the dessert. The unexpected.

The Kelso sand dunes ae located between Baker Ca, and Amboy. Huge beautiful sand dunes. Very cool. There is also an old rail road maintenance trainring enter for developing rail workers skills. Lots of cool stuff in the desert if you look. The amboy crater where an asteroid hit is cool. The desert is no place to roll the dice in bad weather. Huge flash floods come down from the mountains and can be deadly.

It's a terrible feeling to pump 35 gallons into your car, be driving along, and realize you have a range of under 350 miles. Then do the math while you're looking for the next gas station & feel your wallet.

From your story telling of the Americana to the buildings and automobiles which you come across, I think the thing I respect about you most is that you respect other's property by not trespassing and even when you find something of interest on the ground, you put it back after filming and leave it for someone else to find. This brings back some memories, I am 65 now but back when I was a teenager our family had a place on the Colorado River just south of Needles. Just before you cross the river on the west side there was an HOA campground, if you took that frontage road along the river you would come to some homes, I would love to say they were nice ranch style home but it truth they were single and double wide mobile homes and that is ok because we did not spend much time in them. We had VW dune buggies, birt bike and boats to keep us occupied. I remember riding the bikes from there all the way into town through the desert and stopping at the gas station to gas up and have a Coke out of the old vending machine. Those were some good times and I thank you David for bringing some back. Keep up the fantastic content and you will have me viewing for life 😮

Thank you, David. We are kindered spirits. I love rural America. Thanks for showing me the west coast, Route 66. I loved it. The history, the old buildings, the old signs, amazing. Some day, I would love to see it before it's gone completely. Being from Ohio, we have a lot of valuable history, but the lure of Rt 66 is almost more than a mere human can stand. I can understand why half of America followed that route towards prosperity and the American dream. Thank you again for showing me a bit of it and resorting my lust for that part of our country . God bless America.

Back when my dad was in the Air Force, he drove Route 66 five times in his '50 Chevy Fleetline. March Air Force Base in Riverside to Middle Tennessee and back. He still talks about those days and reads books about The Mother Road. He used to talk us about going out there with our motorcycles and riding some of it, but he stopped riding a few years ago - at age 85. I'm sending him this video. Thanks again for all the history and nostalgia. Another note: I'm a fan of John Lautner's architecture, so I recognized those roof lines. I dread to hear how many of his homes (and Eichler's, Neutra's, etc.) were lost in the recent fires. Not to mention the classic cars, motorcycles, and vintage musical instruments.

I love old gas stations too. I worked at one back in the seventies during the fuel shortage. We ration gas 10-gallon maximum, odd or even number plates, there would be multiple fist fights every shift. Plus it was the time when gas broke the $1 per gallon. That was a huge problem with analog pumps, they weren't capable of doing that. So whatever the pump said we had to double it. The gal were always right but the price was half and my drawer at the end of the shift would be off sometimes as much as $40 because I would forget, I was running four Islands by myself, doing windshields and checking oil on every single car. The good old days.

Wow, one of your best adventures yet! We stayed overnight in Barstow 12 years ago. It was SO hot! 82 degrees in the motel room with the A/C blasting all night along with the train horns. So cool that the old Cessna 182 was just taxing down the road. Malcom was a true legend, best off road racer ever. He made everyone else look slow. So cool that he knew you and said he couldn't afford cars so he had motorcycles! Same!

Thanks for the memories. As a kid I actually lived on Route 66 between Helendale and Oro Grande north of Victorville. I rode the school bus when in kindergarten and first grade on 66. We went on vacations back east traveling on 66 and I can still remember every place you visited when they were in operation in the 50’s and 60’s riding in my dad’s 53 Buick and 60 Ford. My dad spent 32 years working at the Riverside Cement plant in Oro Grande and drove Old 66 everyday.

My 1954 chevy 210 that I still haven't got on the road, has the original Phillips 66 spare tire in the trunk with the Jack.. Never used.. Was a born and raises Southern California kid who now lives in Oklahoma because my grandparents fled the dustbowl as children with their families and met in California during the early 40s. Loved the stories they would tell of driving 66. My plan was to get the 54 on the road and drive it with my grampa since my grandma passed. He was a complete and total car culture original.. Unfortunately I was diagnosed with leukemia, then he passed and now the 54 sits and I think of him every time I look at it.. Its a time capsule of time and memories. I have thought of selling it but just cannot. The motor is in the stand still sitting in front of it.. Some have keepsakes. Mine just happens to be a 54, 210.. I will make that trip one day.. Thank you for the memory stoking videos. They mean a lot..
