Genesis music always makes "sense". Every player is brilliant.

A brilliant opening track to this album. After the departure of Peter many thought the band wouldn't survive, well once we heard the opening sequence knew everything was going to be ok, such power and brilliant musical construction. Steve Hackett wrote the final fast part of this with intricate guitar and just so much going on. It's strange because even though I preferred The Gabriel era this is my favourite Genesis album. It's a superb record with this powerful opener, superb track like Entagled, Mad Man Moon and Ripples, and bookended by the brilliant Los Endos using Dance On Volcano and Squonk in reprise. This album is a masterpiece in construction.

Have you checked out ProgRadio online? I am in no way affiliated and found it by mistake but it's ad-free and they play some odd stuff that I otherwise would never listen to.

Genesis was the best prog rock band to me... And there are some tracks really heavy, like "Dancing with the moonlit knight" or the live version of "The Knife" (1973), Phil is amazing, creative and subtile. My favorite track is "Firth of Fifth", I could listen to it all the time... Great reaction, thanks 😉

Excellent choice! Thanks, Tom. This was the opening song on the first album with Phil Collins. One of my favorites along with 'Blood on the Rooftops'. Many try to emulate Genesis, few succeed because Phil Collins is unique in grooving odd time signatures while holding it all together with the band being so crazy tight. Genesis always, ALWAYS, puts the music first. The lyrics on this are fantastic. "Lava's the lover who licks your boots away" A volcano is chaotic like the music. It is a metaphor for life but also alludes to WW1 and trench warfare (more chaos) "crosses are green, crosses are blue" (indicating which gas killed them) then it alludes to Phil coming out from behind his kit to sing lead! ("move into the light") He better start doin' it right! (I think he did)

I used to think I was a fan of Peter Gabriel era Genesis; I eventually noticed I was actually a fan of Steve Hackett era Genesis. There's a lot of overlap, but I'd put this album up there with Nursery Cryme. Thanks for figuring out the time signature, I couldn't get it! I'm glad you put enough caveats into the rant part that something like Ghost Love Score can maybe get a pass...

My dad would play Genesis constantly when I was younger, and that got me into the music I listen to today. Love Genesis. Especially with Phil Collins.

The verses have got this crazy shot on the offbeat between the 6 and 7 count. Phil's drumming is superb through the whole thing. This entire album is fantastic and showcases some of finest drum tracks ever laid down. I think they also achieved the greatest recorded production of drums I have ever heard. Squonk is another good example. Phil sounded like a crispy version of Bonzo and the way he starts hammering the quarters on the china-type and the crashes as it builds... Just bonkers drumming..

One of my fav albums from the 70's. Genius!! Worth a full play through. PS often point out that the difference (in my mind) between the progressive bands of the 60s through 70s and "prog" bands. The former were trying new things, pushing musical boundaries, being creative - but so often later "prog" groups work to a "me too" formula inside of a box. _Not the same!_

Actually, there were a few bars near the end where they slipped into a four count and a three count, but they were fleeting and quickly went back to seven. If you want to hear a band nail 5/4 to the wall and stick with it through an entire track, try Starbird by Manfred Mann's Earth Band which has a middle section call and response duel between electric guitar and synthesizer that kicks butt.

Early Genesis is my favourite band, good track but overall I like prog albums with Peter Gabriel more, they were truly on point, it’s not enough of it here. You can understand me if you will listen to “The Cinema Show”, “Firth Of Fifth”, “Supper’s Ready”, “The Musical Box” etc

With all respect, I'm fairly amazed at your obsession with time signatures. Keep this in mind: it is possible to find yourself completely and pleasantly immersed in a song while being completely oblivious to whatever time signature the band is in at the time. Ya know? To me, it's just _what do you feel_ about the melodies & groove during the times when they are using a different time signature for certain passages? Unless you only listen to music that you can dance to, what the hell difference does it make? (Could you guess? I'm a big YES fan...)

My favourite Genesis album..... Trick of the Tail. Loved your reaction David. Think the drummer may of been Chester Thompson on this one. I know he toured with them.
@BillPassmore9 күн бұрын
what? phil collins played drums on every genesis record from nursery cryme onwards
@RubesGoodBrainCoffee9 күн бұрын
Chester Thompson was their touring drummer, but he didn't play on any of the albums. Collins played on them from 1971 to when he left the band in 1995. There's one last album from 1997 that they had two session drummers play on.
@PracticallyFixed8 күн бұрын
Studio work is always Phil since NC. When Ant Phillips left after Trespass, they decided to change drummers at the same time and that was when they picked up Phil, with Steve Hackett shortly after. For the Trick tour, their tour drummer was Bill Bruford, to be replaced by Chester afterwards.

Most of the song is 7/8, but the into is 6/4, 11/16, 7/8, 11/16, 7/8, 11/16 then 7/8 (all most, may be more complicated)

@jamesbatcho7 күн бұрын
No we weren't. The start is not 7/8. And from 14:11 on you get 2 bars of 4/4, and then a whole mess of 4, 5 and 6 beats per measure. It's certainly not 7/8 all the way through. The reason you couldn't tell is because the genius of the tune is that it feels so consistent. Side note: I know this is a co-written song, but this is SUCH a Steve Hackett tune.
@michelcamino62904 күн бұрын
I’m not sure about this but I remember reading long ago that Mike had started writing/playing the first notes and concept of the song and the band had begun jamming to it. This was while Steve had been away working on his solo album. When he did join in he made his contributions, most likely in the jazzy instrumental section in the latter part of the song.
