What other tracks from the Phil era should I check out? After watching this performance, I am KEEN to hear more. I have heard many things about it (good and bad) but it's an era I am not familiar with as much. I know A Trick of the Tail back to front but that is it.

The vast majority of any negativity comes from the self important super nerds. Genesis have evolved over the years and bands that do that are pretty much the only ones with very long careers.

You should listen to the Duke suite, Home by the sea, Domino, Tonight tonight tonight, no son of mine, driving the last spike, dreaming while you sleep, fading lights etc etc... And don't forget to watch "and so to f" Brand X tune live by Phil Collins in 82

Nice reaction. In the 80's I worked for a security company and worked several Genesis shows. Phil traveled with a ping pong table and played every night. I was working so I never got to play with him but many non band members did. Super nice and funny guy.

You are at the top of the reactor class, and Genesis will always be the top of the band class in my book, and your reactions to my favorite band are always top-notch and I will always watch anything you have to say about them or anything having to do with them. Wise enough in your music to give any song a second Chance live is a philosophy I follow and thoroughly admire although it is not common these days.

Genesis from any era is fantastic! Phil, imo, is the GOAT as far as drummers go. Phil's just effortless the way he plays. The drumming equivalent to David Gilmour's effortless guitar, imo. And Chester is the most underrated drummer of all time. He deserves to be a household name. He's top 5 for sure. More Genesis from this era is welcome!

I agree with you on the fact that this live version of Abacab is just brilliant! 😀 It turns the song up several notches. I also agree that Phil is very often underrated as a drummer. There's a channel called Drumeo, which has released a documentary on Phil and includes interviews with a huge array of drummers from Chad Smith to Marco Minneman.

While Mike isn't known that much for his lead guitar capabilities in the grand scheme of things, that was him during his peak. He did have creative ideas later on in his career, but here, the combination of skill, practice and that aggressive-yet clear guitar tone made it pretty much the definitive version. Their very last ever Abacab performance remains unmatched and i am glad that it has been documented. Being a fan now for decades, i still think that Genesis works live the best. Same with Los Endos, Firth Of Fifth and many other tracks - it is mainly live when the music finally starts to blossom. Your reaction is priceless, as it feels like the track went from a 4/10 to a 9/10 - kind of, the improvements are simply that insane - much tighter.

I love the album version too, the production is amazing and was such a bold move from the band at the time, they were prog dinosaurs in the eyes of the new wave bands of the time but unlike their Prog peers they broke the mould with Abacab and entered the 80s a creative force and became even more popular along with Collins solo career...

A true gem of early Phil Collins era Genesis from 1976, "Genesis In Concert" kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3-opYKmq8qfe6s is one of the only pro shot videos from the Trick Of The Tail tour with Phil debuting as frontman, and he simply crushes it, also featuring the legendary Bill Bruford on drums that tour, 45 minutes of peak Genesis from 1976. Well worth a watch, if not an entire reaction. A simply stunning concert video, featuring songs I Know What I Like, Fly On A Windshield, The Carpet Crawlers, The Cinema Show (Part 2) Entangled, Supper's Ready (Part 2), & Los Endos. 💯🔥🔥They used to play this at midnight movies for years in the late 70's to mid 80s, and I must have gone to see it over a dozen times over the years.

Now it doesn't mean anything, but back in 1987, I was probably the only person who loved Phil Collins AND Sex Pistols. In my circles, Phil Collins and Genesis were reviled. But I always loved him, even as my tastes became more informed and diverse.

Domino from wembley 87 is awesome. You did the drum Duet from wembley 87 but cut it off before it moved into Los Endos. You have to watch that whole drum Duet/Los Endos double header it's incredible. Also, Old Medley from 1992 Knebworth is an incredible 18 mins of musicianship and for a bit of fun and "modern" genesis try Jesus He Knows Me from knebworth 92. Possibly the best live performance of them on KZbin is the 1984 In The Cage Medley

Not 100% sure if this is true or not, but I once heard that the name Abacab came from the original chord structure of the song. A B A C A B, but it was changed during recording.
@mickr144816 күн бұрын
Saw it at Hampden Park Scotland, this was the band in their prime, no-one apparently liked Genesis at this time lol and yet every gig in massive stadiums sold out, I believe Abacab is the chord progressions but i'm not a musician so could be wrong.
@swirll36021 күн бұрын
just a friendly FYI: that was Mike on guitar. I know you always express how much you appreciate the information we give you so I'm comfortable you'll be cool with it. Typically, when Genesis plays live, Daryll will play Steve's guitar parts. Mike is a good guitar player, but he's not as skilled. Mike plays his own guitar parts from the albums after Steve left. It typically goes like that. There might be a variable here and there but generally, that's how it's done live. Mike himself has said Steves's parts were more complex than his abilities could handle (paraphrasing) so Daryl was hired mostly by Mike with the band's blessing.
@schmedrake542919 күн бұрын
You were praising Daryl’s guitar playing here, but it was Mike’s playing you were commenting on. Daryl was on bass on this song. He’s lead in Phil’s band, but largely bass in Genesis. He did do both in Genesis. Mike is identifiable because he’s very tall and lanky. He’s also usually identifiable by his two neck guitar. But not in this video.

I n my opinion but you do you, i got so fed up at Wembley at a Floyd concert i went home , it is a dreadful venue for music ("see" Stones ,Springsteen there too on a giant screen! ) it was built as a football stadium not a music venue for greedy bastards racking in as much as they can in one fowl stoop rather than do weeks at Hammersmith Odeon & the Rainbow Theatre where you can see them and hear them and have a great night out like in did in '78 when AC/DC done Hammersmith and it was GREAT .
