Agreed. It’s never a good idea to throw someone in the deep when learning about something. It can turn them off for good. It's like taking a novice skier to the top of the chairlift first time out. I’m sorry their “director?” Doesn’t cull better. This was not a good match for them at this point in their journey, and frankly, might never be. It certainly has never been for me.

That's Phil Collins on the drums, before he became a singer. Steve Hackett on lead guitar. Tony Banks, the keyboardist, is the main songwriter on this one. Peter Gabriel is the singer and played the flute. Finally, Mike Rutherford was on bass.

@rk41gator I considered saying 'lead singer,' but one could also argue that he sang lead as far back as Flaming Youth -- or before that, even. I already have a tendency to needlessly complicate things. Doing so can interfere with communicating simple points, so I chose to err on the side of simplicity in this case.

As a huge fan of both prog and punk, popular music shouldn't lost sight of what it is. Early 70s prog was an anomaly though; bands like Genesis, Camel, and Renaissance knew how to develop structure, which differs from what now is considered prog - a bunch of musical ideas simply stitched together, sons of Rush.

Hi Guys. Great reaction with a true appreciation of the music. Firth Of Fifth is a masterpiece, Steve Hackett the guitarist here who left the band in 1977, still does this in all his live shows and it is incredible, live it just is much better. The back catalogue of Genesis is immense. So many songs it almost impossible to recommend. However, the period from 1973-1977 was epic. Four incredible albums Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, A Trick Of The Tail, Wind and Wuthering. The live versions as always sound so much better. Even in the 2007 tour when the three Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins ( yes the famous solo artist and drummer here replaced who Peter Gabriel as Lead Singer in 1976) reformed along with Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer, the old medley of songs was 17 mins of pure musical majesty. The medley of In The Cage/Cinema Show/ Dukes Travels/Afterglow was imperious give it a listen kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnS0kmeohMegq7s

Genesis were way ahead of their time in 1973 when this record came out... That's why people didn't get them; it took years for the public to catch up to what the band was musically capable of... Genesis became superstars by the 80's and both their lead singers (Peter Gabriel, and then Phil Collins) became iconic solo singers. Unlike most UK bands, Genesis were not formed by struggling musicians... They were 4 rich kids who became friends and got a band together to play music in the late 60's... Their goal was to make the most challenging and surreal music possible. The original Genesis was: Peter Gabriel (lead vocals), Mike Rutherford (guitar & bass), Tony Banks (organ/ keyboards) and Anthony Phillips (guitar)... In 1970, Anthony Phillips left Genesis and was replaced by Steve Hackett (guitar)... and Phil Collins (drums) joined Genesis. Genesis released a string of albums that drew a loyal fanbase but couldn't sell too many records... Their singer Peter Gabriel was more famous for the fantasy characters and costumes that he would portray onstage in concerts... However, a family emergency in 1975 prompted Peter Gabriel to leave Genesis after the 1974 album 'The lamb lies down on Broadway'... He launched a solo career a few years later and became a star by the 80's. Many Genesis fans still consider their early records w/ Peter Gabriel as their best work. Working on new music, Genesis began recording a new album without a lead singer as they auditioned prospective vocalists... Phil Collins would sing backup and harmonies for the band but he sounded better singing lead than any of the singers who auditioned, according to the band members... 400 vocalists were auditioned over months and they couldn't agree on hiring anyone by 1976... With a new album 'A trick of the tail' complete, Phil Collins finally relented and recorded the album's vocals. To the shock of everyone, the album 'A trick of the tail' became a bigger commercial hit than any of the previous Genesis albums... The band was in debt and the album's sales generated enough money to settle most of what they owed... Steve Hackett left Genesis in 1977 after the album 'Wind and Wuthering'... Genesis became a trio w/ Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks, and would tour w/ session musicians. In 1978, Genesis had a huge hit single 'Follow you, follow me'... from the album 'And then there were three'... and it ushered a more modern, commercial sound from the 1980 album 'Duke' onwards... Phil Collins released his first solo album 'Face value' in 1981 and it outsold Genesis albums... but he stayed loyal to Genesis as they became massively popular in the 80's and sold out arenas and stadiums on tour.

Yes, this song is amazing... Genesis was an incredible prog rock band in the 70's. From the same album (great album), you can listen to "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight", Phil Collins is a genius on that track, and yes, the whole band is amazing. You could also react to "The Knife" in live (1973), very appreciated by metal listeners, incredible guitar solo too, huge bass line and drums. Great reaction, I also listen to this song all the time, a pure journey. Thanks, guys, subscribed and love from France ❤

Really enjoyed watching your reaction to the best Prog Rock song ever written. I have been listening to Genesis for over 40 years, it never gets dull, still discovering something new on repeated listens. Genesis is a deep rabbit whole, 1970’s Genesis was prog rock, then with the advent of punk rock in the late 70’s Genesis knew they needed to evolve to stay relevant, so they transitioned to a more commercial stadium rock sound in the 1980’s. I see a few have suggested, “suppers ready”, which is probably there best prog rock song after “Firth of Fifth”. Cinema Show is also highly recommended.

I recommend that you try the band Supertramp. It is very accessible prog rock from the early 70's onward. Everyone loves "The Logical Song". One of my favorites is "Crime of the Century" from the masterpiece album of the same name. Or you could keep going with Genesis, just don't hit them with "Supper's Ready" yet. Maybe "Dance with the Volcano", "Carpet Crawlers", or "Driving the Last Spike", yikes just so many good ones. If you stick with Genesis, do try to find the live versions if they are of decent quality. Genesis live is so good and they have a huge catalog, you could spend some lovely time here, and I doubt anyone would be disappointed. If you want to move to Pink Floyd, I would suggest starting with the album, Dark Side of the Moon. IMO, that is PF at their most upbeat. I would not start with "Animals" or "The Wall", even though they are both masterpieces.

@@rk41gator I also love "Animals", it might be their best, but I didn't love it when I first heard it. Coming right after "Wish You Were Here", it was jarring, bleak, and black. I had read Orwell's "Animal Farm", so I got the references. "Supper's Ready" is another one, I had to actively listen numerous times before it clicked. Now I can't hear it without tearing up. Even though an avowed prog rock lover for forever, I have not spent time with either Gentle Giant or King Crimson. I have heard King Crimson's big hit but that is it. I'll put them on my LLL (listen later list). I'm glad I left a few bands from that golden age for discovery in my (hah!) golden years.

The progressive music of the late 1960s and early 1970s was so ahead of its time that people are only recently rallying around it. This song is consistently listed among the top five in the genre, as well as the album, which is also among the best ever. Don't miss "Close to the Edge" by Yes, "In the Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson or "Echoes", Pink Floyd live at Pompeii. These are all representative of the greatness of that renaissance in culture and music. The band, Renaissance also always delivers. Tull's "Thick as a Brick" is also essential. Much is owed to the great John Coltrane, who reincarnated as Jimi Hendrix, trading a sax for a guitar. Great show y'all. New subscriber.

Would not be surprised if he listened to some prog growing up mixed in with all that jazz and soul he was into. This whole album is pretty great, though the other real "prog masterpiece" from it is "The Cinema Show." For my money, Genesis were at their best doing moody, atmospheric stuff. "MAd Man Moon," "Entangled," "Blood on the Rooftops," "Dance on a Volcano," "In the Cage."

This is considered by prog rock lovers, to be among the finest prog rock compositions in history. I’ve tried and tried to connect with it and like it. No such luck. I appreciate the immense skill and talent of the musicians. But that’s as far as I can take it. But then, I’m just not a natural lover of prog although there are particular songs I do love…the more “accessible” ones.

Is it too calm? Genesis use a lot of polyrhythms in a jazzy way with 'interesting' syncopation. But I am surprised. From your previous comments I thought you loved Prog.

@ I go song by song. Some I love much of Later 80’s Genesis as it morphs in my mind with solo Phil Collins. I like certain songs by Yes ADORE Pink Floyd which some label as prog but I call a genre of their own. Love several Marillion songs. Liked allot of Moody Blues, whom I consider OG prog. Supertramp. Some Camel, Gentle Giant Strangely I’ve lately ( 4 years) discovered prog metal (Tool, Porcupine Tree, The Pineapple Thief) and like that better than prog rock because it has a deeper and more powerful deep end. I adore powerful bass But early Genesis, Yes, ELP, King Crimson..NO Love syncopation…..as I mention, Tool Also Maynard’s other projects Puscifer and….A Perfect Circle Myles Kennedy. Classic prog rock is too “busy” for me. I like jazz, but smooth jazz, not busy jazz. All that frenetic busyness leaves me cold emotionally, although I can appreciate it technically. And no, Firth of Fifth is not too calm. I’d prefer it if it were allot MORE calm.

@@helenespaulding7562 Interesting response. I am surprised you don't like King Crimson. While not my favorite band (because they often drift into what I would call Metal Prog), they have my respect with some incredible lyrics and musical adventures. I would put PF in the prog camp but agree they are their own genre. Love them. (I think I read that Phil did not.....which also surprises me). So much great music out there to find and enjoy.

@@rk41gatorhonestly? I’ve only heard a couple of song from KC and made my judgement off of that. In The Hall of the Crimson King I think. It hits me like Close to the Edge by Yes or Firth of Fourth. Don’t get me wrong: As I said, I RESPECT these groups allot. Those song just don’t connect with me. My taste runs several ways ( many actually) but is centered in blues rock. If you realize that When the Levee Breaks is in my top five EVER, that should tell you what moves me. Pretty different from Firth of Fourth, yes?

@@helenespaulding7562 No doubt. At least I know Genesis intentionally went away from the blues. It seemed as prog emerged blues was king and they wanted to stay 'English'. Of course, Eric Clapton was Anglo and seems to rock the blues, so what's in that? Crimson was rather clinical and sterile, can say they ventured into the blues either. But 'Epitaph' and 'Starless' are pretty emotional. Bleak? And of course, '21st Century Schizoid Man' is bizarre and off in it's own world. A lot of English Prog is rooted in Renaissance and Jazz music. Not for everyone. I love it all but oddly connect most to Prog and Southern Rock. But Supertramp is near the top of my list......funky.
