Agreed. I'm not too happy about our role in this Gaza fiasco. It's my #1 problem with Biden. However, trump is a proven bigot when it comes to muslims and will do nothing or do harm to Gaza (whatever is left of it). Also, just came out today that Kushner wants to turn Gaza into condos.

That poor person who will not read fiction because it is "worthless". l have taken classes most of my life (the pandemic and transportation interrupted my studies.) I love to learn, but l also used to read Barbara Cartland Romantic Books for fun, and l actually learned a lot. Being British, l learned a great deal about British culture, class system, and what things were like. She championed the gypsies. It was fun to let go of current reality and just pretending to live in those tomes with current knowledge. I am currently reading non-fiction because l am concerned for our democracy and Constitutional Republic. I was raised in a Republucan Household, but the party left me when Reagan created homelessness in a very cruel way in my home state of California. I have taught elementary school, been a paralegal, paramedic, and actually taught a college level anatomy lab. I thibk that gives me academic credentials, and l still love fiction. Tell that person to get a life!!!!

@@darksesh8247 You are seriously deluded. FIVE KEY ECONOMIC AREAS PROFITTING UNDER PRESIDENT BIDEN: Jobs. Manufacturing. Growth. Wages. Inflation. 1. Jobs ….. The unemployment rate fell to 3.6% in June, 3.7% in November. It’s now been under 4% for 17 straight months. That hasn’t happened in more than half a century. 14.5 million jobs ADDED to the economy, thanks to President Biden. 2. Manufacturing ….. Remember “Build Back Better?” President Biden delivered 800,000 new jobs and $200 billion in new investments by manufacturers, fueled by Biden’s new spending via the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the Chips and Science Act. 3. Growth ….. The latest growth figures came out showing U.S. GDP grew at a 5.2% annual rate over the third quarter of this year. Way above the 2.0% economists had expected. The U.S. economy is growing. 4. Wages ….. You know what else is beating inflation now? Worker’s wages. They’re going up faster than the prices of goods; up more than 4%, since last year, higher than that 3% inflation rate. 5. Inflation ….. Inflation dropped to 3% in June, according to government data released last month. That’s the lowest level since March 2021, and just slightly higher than the Fed’s ideal rate of 2%. Inflation has gone down in America for 12 straight months. This month, U.S. inflation was at 0%. You will NEVER see those numbers under a Republican president. Try again.

A person who is uncomfortable with human emotions will often withdraw socially to the point that reading fiction is a threat. They are so uncomfortable with their lack of ability to properly demonstrate public empathy it would be like giving a speech when terrified by public speaking. They explain why fiction is "safe" to them as it does not run the potential of knotting your throat or squeezing a tear. It is more personally applicable as opposed to an elephant in the room scenario; no worries Dave it's just an individual with some emotional issues to work through.

In 1984, Orwell thought carefully about the power of language. Newspeak, the invented language of the novel, is specifically designed to control the thought process via a limited vocabulary and a system of brutal simplification that prevents complex thought or the expression of any concept not in line with the totalitarian government’s orthodoxy. I dont think we are going down as a country because people don't read fiction. Reading is a form of entertainment and if the argument is that people learn empathy from books, i would have to say that people can also learn empathy from things like tv shows and movies. Fiction books are just stories that are now in written form. Before books, people would sit around as someone tells a story. Nowadays we see stories through multiple media sources. Sonin conclusion, its complicated.

Probably all produce some form of familiarity and perhaps understanding/empathy. I think all “remote” interactions pale vs. meeting in person a people and their culture. My concern is folks assume a falsely deep level of understanding based on a limited amount of data. “You don’t know what you don’t know” can not be understated

Do people not enjoy reading fiction to unwind after a hard day? Do they not enjoy a variety of entertainment? For media that can mean gaming, TV or movies, sports, documentaries, podcasts, reading, etc. I can get someone saying that fiction can be a bit too repetitive at times but maybe then just try different genres or different authors. I honestly prefer to consume fiction in the form of books or games. To me reading is a way to unwind before bed. Spending 5-30 minutes with my Kindle before I fall asleep is part of my ritual. The only risk there is when reading something new that really gets my attention, sometimes that 30 minutes turns into 3 hours and that can be a problem the next day at work. I know the trope of a movie or show based on a book is the book is better. And that does usually seem to be true because some things have to be cut and sometimes the decisions by the show writers can really harm important parts of the stories, characters, and worlds. But as much as I'd love to see a great adaptation of Dresden Files to TV for example, there would still be something about starting from the beginning again. I can't imagine always taking myself so seriously that I refuse to enjoy fiction. It is too easy to focus on growing my skills for work or wanting to always learn by seeing for example the 3x+1 problem from Veritasium. But sometimes I just need to run some echos on Last Epoch or play a few hands of Balatro after work. Sometimes I want to watch some Star Trek series or read Will Wight or Jim Butcher's books. Never taking the time to enjoy a story to me feels like training for a marathon by always doing interval training and never settling down to endurance or tempo pace runs.

On the subject of reading, my takeaway from the year of high school where the reading was all non fiction: all autobiographies are for authors to justify their actions. The only exception to that I've read was "A long Way Gone" by Ishmael Bae, and that dude was an actual child soldier who had every right to blame the world and instead he says "I killed people, heres how I did it, heres what got me to stop". So I've proudly not read any non fiction personal stories since high school.

The problem is that an honest "think like a lawyer" book for children in a way would actually teach some level of dishonesty. You'll see lawyers themselves saying things along the lines that the case a lawyer makes isn't so much concerned/related with the truth of the matters, but rather what would be possible to get away with. I think that was usually said not in open admission of doing that themselves, but on why there would be some defense cases made for some people, that the case being made doesn't really mean it has a factual basis to support it, only that they hope it may seem so or be beneficial in some other way, somehow.

3:25 Actually it has nothing to do with that and everything with urbanization. Cities have always been demographically negative since the beginning of history and they still are today. If the majority of the people live within cities then the country will have a negative birthrate. France has the highest birthrate in Europe cause it's also one of the least urbanized ones.

Jesus how does this branjo guy get through his life? Is he sitting there all day just mindlessly reading reports about things that happened? I can't even imagine how to spend your time completely without anything fictional.

I don’t think that Luke asking about the interviewees income, will not work too well. - I guess most people will end the interview. - Discussing the impact of the next president on someone’s income will require a long form discussion based on honest answers. And the outcome might be rather specific for that person. - It will require a vast amount of knowledge, about different different industries, taxes and benefits in the different states. - It will flip the script, as it would lead to Luke being up point and the interviewee rebutting them. Rather than Luke easily addressing tired talking points. - And I might vote against my direct financial interest is I think there is something more important to address. David and Luke are probably financially better of due to the craziness of the US politics, but love the country and democracy more than some extra money. And keep in mind that in general Trump voters seem to have a faith based worldview, particularly one where wealth is closely linked to being in the good graces with god. They mostly take it on faith (and propaganda) that Trump and MAGA are chosen by God and it will work out for the better. And they might understand that other things need to be addressed before their situation is improved. But in the end they have god on their side.

The reason the birthrate decline is a problem is that more and more countries are seeing their birthrates drop below replacement levels, meaning that more people are dying than are being born. In the long run, this is a bad thing in all sorts of ways.

Oooh...Sir, I just disagreed with you, David. I would've ran off a list of accomplishments with dates, years and signed Bills. Leaving it the way you did only affords the naysayers say "well, I guess Biden hadn't accomplished anything." As much as I pay attention to politics I cannot run off a list. Please consider doing a show of his accomplishments. Now that would be the best advertisement for voting for Biden.
