I bought my Mirage DSK-1 new in 1987 (it was my first 'real' keyboard) and recently had it come back into my life after more than 20 years separated. Reconnecting with it has been amazing, and it warms my heart to see how well it's still regarded today. 🧡

What a beautiful video! Thank you so much. Today I switched on my DSK-8 for the first since 2004 and it worked. Phew! Back in 1985, although my day job was being the Fairlight Series III demonstrator at Syco Systems, I did actually do the launch demonstration for the Mirage in the UK. So I love how you have highlighted the unique quality of the Mirage and also reminded us about the respect to have for what is going on in the engine under the bonnet of the technology we have today, and often take for granted. Much respect. Happy 2022!

My first Sampler, circa 1987. It's so awesome to see you support this Lo-Fi Dream Machine. I actually miss mine, but that was so long ago. If your real lucky, you can still find the Triton Soundprocess Synth Operating System for it.

And thank you so much for the Manual ! and to add its totally worth the time it takes to sample with this machine, its a tool a texture of its own for anyone to apply with.

Such a beauty, thanks for this. I was recording with mine yesterday and it became 80% of the layers of the track Another gnarly process (I saw Legowelt do with his s950) is record a synth sequence into the Mirage then play it back lower or higher to get a different result. Ive noticed you can degrade more when lowering the master tune, once the sample is loaded.

I like your choice of terms for the Mirage: The Wayback Machine of samplers. Younger viewers might think this term is in reference to the internet archive website, but the origin of the Wayback Machine is named in reference to the famous Mr. Peabody's WABAC (pronounced way-back) machine from the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon show from 1959. Some of us are old enough to remember watching this as kids. Had my Mirage since it was brand new! Love it. Cheers.

Nobody knew what a Mirage was when you first got it? The Mirage is a legendary game changing sampler. ...widely known as the first affordable sampler and was used extensively by countless groups and underground music producers from the time it came out.

I adore the Mirage - have had one in my setup always. I'm hoping that someday, another OS will be developed that will allow for LFO to control filter cutoff/modulation and dynamic sample allocation. It's got such an interesting palette of sounds - like using a different brush and ink. Gauzy, metallic - yet gentle. Like audio cheesecloth.

What about a comparison Mirage / BitCrusher VSTs? I would love to tinker around with a Mirage, I had an Ensoniq ESQ-1 and was super cool. But still, if VSTs do more or less the same job then there's no need for a Mirage.

Hi, Just flipping with the possibilities of sound design! Me and my brother just bought the rack unit! Has rack unit the same specs as the keyboard? For example the sequencer? Thanks for your videos Best

Yep it does for the most part its 98% the same.

Despite my drive still working I’ve contemplated getting an emulator to simplify matters, and to protect the original drive from dying. I’m curious if an emulator would in any way limit it’s more experimental sampling functions?

Is there a difference between the sequencer on the asr 10 and mirage?
@ghostexits2 жыл бұрын
It has more character than almost any other sampler, but you need a friggin hexadecimal translation card in front of you just to edit your samples. How did the Mirage make it to marketplace this way?

@Spring Spring yo nurd, don’t nibble my bits
@TheDaydreamSound2 жыл бұрын
What's up!!! Yep! Hex is easier to understand than the decimal system that we commonly use. The fear of it is more myth than real. I can tell you there's a lot of people right now that wish they'd bought a Mirage sooner but were talked out of it because of the fear of Hex. Unfortunately now they're paying for it 10x the price for it.
@ghostexits2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDaydreamSound my feeling was, the hex code is extra step on what is already an obtuse 2-digit data entry interface design. The parameter legend isn’t printed on the panel; you generally need the parameter card on hand while you’re editing. I prefer instruments to be streamlined and simple. I had a Mirage for years and it sounds fantastic- but sadly it has the worst interface (is there anything close?) For someone like me who might only keep one hardware sampler around, the Mirage would not be my first choice.

The best Thing of the Ensoniq Mirage is the keys. really. No better keys....tried hundreds of keyboard, never had that smooth and easy feeling like the Mirags keys. Totally underrated.! Compare it!

Hey what is going on? If you have both the original user guide and the musician’s manual do you need this manual you are offering?
@TheDaydreamSound3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out! Common question. The artists who invest in these manuals do so mainly because they appreciate and resonate with the way that I expound on sampling and music. With that as the denominator I would say that if you have a Mirage and don’t understand it or are thinking about getting one and want to understand it then this manual would be a great option for you. If you aren’t familiar with me or my approach to music and sampling. You can always look at the manual curriculum at anytime www.thedaydreamsound.com/sampler-courses In addition, you can also have a look at the content right here on this channel to give you a comprehensive notion of what to expect. For more general information about The Daydream Sound manuals I would encourage you to have a look at the FAQ section www.thedaydreamsound.com/faq

What's up man!!! I do think about that possibility sometimes but I doubt it. I know there's a good bit of people who creep this channel and won't admit it openly but even so that's not enough to warrant what's happening to the Mirage these days.
