The 'banana' is just an extreme example of 'conspicuous waste', which is how the wealthy compete with each other once they already have everything they could possibly need and are no longer competing with the hoi polloi who all live hand to mouth. It's just a battle for status and two fingers to the starving, the homeless, and the 'losers'. It has always existed from the 'no man can eat two dinners' days when plenty of anything was a rarity, so feasts and orgies were the way the rich showed off. Then there's only so many mansions you can keep track of, but there's only one Mona Lisa, so you move on to the latest T rex or Stegasaurus. Then, when the clutter just gets too much for the effort of showing off, (how many electric compost makers can you manage?), you buy a banana off a wall for the media attention, and wash it down with priceless old grape juice that probably tastes worse than the tasteless commercial banana.
