I had almost a very similar thing happen to me 2 years ago on public with the wife I set up the night before come back early in the morning and by daylight I had a 185”+ deer about 50yrds in the timber so while I’m waiting I let about a 130-150” walk by to get this other buck he closes in about 30yards and I take the shot and he was gone idk if I hit a branch or what happened but that was the last time I saw him I just started using cameras this year so if he is still alive I’d be impressed! Nice deer brother congrats

Learning experience. Overcome the buck fever and make sure the buck is not moving when you shoot. Bad decisions lead to bad results most of the time.

It’s my second time hunting this year and out of two days I’ve seen 9 bucks and on day one I missed both shots and yesterday (the second day of the hunt) I saw two huge bucks but they where to far for my liking to shoot it.

One reason I shoot a bow that is the same pin to 30 yards. Has bailed me out of a lot of these situations. I am lucky enough to have a 30.5" draw too. So, I have options others don't.

Need all the Luck I can get here in Harlan Ky being that there’s zero ag here! A man has to be able to do everything from start to finish the old way with no cameras and nothing but natural food sources. All the terrain is big, thick mountains. The deer numbers here are most likely the worst in the state.

A gut shot is going to be lethal, just a matter of time. People have to be patient and simply back out. Tracking can of course be very difficult if guts plug up the hole/s. Grid searching is often involved, maybe a dog. Fact is, that deer is dead somewhere.

Bow sight ins off target. If they weren't. You wouldn't have hit that deer that far back. Your pins weren't dead on at 15, 20, or 30 yards. The farther the shot. The more off the impact.

Making an error between 25 or 30 yards does not send an arrow over a deer's back. Additional 5 yards of travel in that range is about 1 inch of drop. You pooched it, just admit it.
