And the Netherlands is more than just Amsterdam, the whole of the Netherlands is littered with bike and footpaths. And everything is well organised so that you can get to all corners and holes by walking, cycling, public transport and car. And don't drive a car in Amsterdam or the big cities, you pay a fortune with parking. That's a cash cow, so you better take public transport IF you come to the Netherlands and there is more than just Amsterdam (which foreigners probably forget)

You are so adorably American in your reaction to the way of life in the Netherlands and just so you know, your not alone. We are so blessed with trains, trams, busses, boates that connect the whole country and almost always ride on time with excellent connection. And then there 's the bike infrastructure and the development of ebikes which make long distance biking more enjoyable. If you ever come to the Netherlands I'd encourage you not to remain in Amsterdam alone but visit other beautiful cities. I do recommend to maybe reach out to some other content creators who operate out of the Netherlands to maybe guide you through your experience and I would highly recommend you do the rounds through various delisious etnic restaurants and foodcourts that are on offer in the bigger cities in the Netherlands. My experience of the world goes mostly through my stomach 😂. A human well fed is a satusfied human.

If you just go to Amsterdam, don’t get a car. I live 20 minutes by car or train from the city center, but the traffic, high parking fees and limited parking spaces make it the worst choice of transportation if you want to spend a relaxed, fun time there. If you plan to see more then just the big cities in the Netherlands, a road trip with a rental car would be fine. It’s a small country, you could visit every corner easily if you want. But whenever you go into town or city centers, bikes are always the most freedom providing mode of transportation in our country!

We walk and bike a lot because every thing is close-by. The innercity, and Every suburb has store's and schools nearby. The Netherlands isn't that big, you can compare it with Idaho? We are also only a two hour train ride away from Paris. People are not afraid to drive in the city, the city wants adjustmance to ban cars to keep the air cleaner, streets saver. and make everything easier with bike or walking. Every parent has a baby carseat in their car. My wife also takes a kid on the front and one on the back on her bike. Specially to school. Kids grow up on a bike, we all did! BTW, i do EVERYTHING by car now. But walk a lot, for exercise and the fun of being outside. Toerists can move around Very easely, directions clear where to go. No matter if you go by car, bike or walk. Roads, as you can see, are in great condition. Its easy peasy to go around. Just be carefull, a lot of pick pocketing, and people who try to sell you crushed paracetamol pills in litte bags... specially near Centraal Station. Kind Regards from The Netherlands :)

Yes you can use a car in Amsterdam for sure, but its just not encouraged, expect high prices to park your car for example. Thats even a big difference with mostly the rest of the Netherlands. In practice a resident in Amsterdam who own’s a car will mostly only use his car when traveling outside the city, and use the bike in town. I live in the town of Naarden for example where like most of NL on street parking is free and way more easy then Amsterdam. But I also do most of my shopping and chores by bike or on foto. Just because its just as easy as taking the car but greater for (mental) health. And when i go to Amsterdam i never take my car but just go by train😅

Bigggest difference between Amsterdam (and most large(r) cities in the Netherlands) and most American cities is, that there is no highway running through the city and it's centre. The highway is there, but it goes (mostly) around the city like a ring (hence the name ringweg=ring road). Yes, there are roads that ables you to go from one part of the city to another witin the city itself, but it takes a lot more of time because of all of the low speed roads, crossroads and traffic signs. So normally it is way better to take that 'ringweg'. And this way most of the car traffic is taken away from the dence housing/living areas and the bicycle lanes. Specially commuting car traffic. Making it much more pleasant to live in the city of Amsterdam (although there's plenty of car traffic left, depending on witch area/street you live)

Always fun to watch your reactions! To answer your question about the metro: Six minutes is on the high end during the day, there are metro lines with as little as 2 or 3minutes. For reference: I live in Rotterdam and work in Delft, and there is a train service (not metro, not light rail, but a real train) every three minutes. Now that's an exception, most train services are only every 15 or even 30minutes, but just to show that, yeah, a six minute wait can feel like a long time :) Ow, and yeah, you're better of driving to a P+R on the outer limits of the city, park and take a train or metro from there. Driving and parking in the inner city is an expensive hell in most (larger) inner cities.

The city is doing more to discourage cars in the city center, but cars are still allowed. Amsterdam is relatively small compared to most US cities. It’s very easy to get around with the trams, metros and buses. And biking is actually faster. Once you get outside of the city center there are roads, freeways etc, so you can easily drive to the outer parts of the city and to other towns. And the roads and freeways are newer and better maintained than Los Angeles, where I am from. With all the public transport options in all of the country, you can get around easily without a car. We don’t have one. But a car is very useful if you have to drive to remote places where a bus might run once every hour. Most families have only one car. And it’s common for companies to give you a company car to use. So road trips are possible and many families prefer to drive to other countries rather than fly.
@cb163612 күн бұрын
Driving with your car to the inner city of Amsterdam is not the greatest idea. That has been build in the time that no cars existed. To make sure that the car is a really unpleasant form of transport in the inner city, the price of parking your car is crazy expensive, all kind of obstacles are there, like one way roads and forbidden areas. Which make sense, otherwise you would have a congested city. Take the public transport of bike. Your are faster, more convenient and less expensive. You could drive to a P + R location at the edges of Amsterdam and take the tram or metro. Also, this is probably true for most European cities. We, kids and I, have done a couple of times Inter-rail. We just take our suitcase and hop on the train to visit various cities all around Europe in 2 or 3 weeks. Public transport in hot major cities is overall very convenient. We have seen and experience more then if we did that by car. And also not that far.

Here in the Netherlands I think we have on average 1.3 bikes per capita So you'll see people getting on their bike at home, bike to the trainstation, take the train to the town or city where they work, take a bike they have waiting for them there, and bike to their place of work

This infrastructure doesn’t come like in a snap of your finger. We are like Trump calls ‘communists’, we pay taxes for this, we build new suburbs with metro connections and bicycle roads to the inner cities. It’s made hard to use a cars that way. It makes Dutchies are relatively fit by walking and cycling. We pay the state and the state pays us back, for everybody, the rich snd the poor.

21:02 Cities like Amsterdam, Groningen, UItrecht, Rotterdam where as carcentric as USA cities are today, but in the 1970's they gor fed up with traffic jams, stroads through cities, exhaust fumes in the streets, and fatal injuries by cars. Then the fuel crisis came and on top of that Dutch government decalred Auto Free sundays.. only emergency vehicles where allowed to drive. Shopkeepers angry becausr no one would be shopping... Ha !! They stoppped whimpering the next carfree sunday... Cars don't do the shopping... people do, and you can fit more people into a shopping street then cars. The shopkeepers saw theyr sales triple and even quadruple when compared to sales when cars where alowed inthe streets. That is when governement started building people friendly streets instead of carfriendly street. People started walking and cycling, streets where narrowed, or made carfree. Go by bike in Groningen from one part of the city it'll take 10 mins, by car 20 mins. Card have to pull out of the quart of the city, take the ringroad and re-enter the cuity. People who love their car are made happy, they can spend longer in their car, drive more around the beautyfull city, all happy :)
