39000 acres of Jagannath Puri mandir was sold by Orissa govt. 4 out of 7 mountains of Tirupati Mandir was donated to Churches and mosques 18 temples and idols were destroyed and demolished by missionaries in Tamil Nadu between 2020 and 2022 and no restoration done. Many temples of Kerala, tamilnadu, Andra Pradesh, Karnataka are still close because of either community cleansing or no funds. These things are in front of our eyes still some idiots cannot see.

FYI.. The temple was exempted from sales tax, wealth tax and income tax besides VAT by the Centre and state governments in the past but has come under the tax scheme for Modi government's GST and is now required to pay 100 crores.. There are more than 3000 temples in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh of which 70% came under the taxing scheme.

What you’ve missed Akash is the historical function of temples. They were not just a religious places, but served as banks, resting places, contract registrars - basically offered facilities for traders. That’s why you find Hindu temples even across the silk roads. They had tremendous wealth, not just from donations, hence all invaders targeted temples. Britishers institutionalised the controls, which we keep till today. The argument that ‘scale’ justifies control is weak - less scale doesn’t mean less corruption. Perhaps, a way to end this debate is to use historicity and scale in conjunction - any religious institution, which has a certain historical and archeological significance - mosque, temple or church etc - could be under an act that supervised. And additionally, any without historical importance but has scale, could be added too. But, as a secular nation, managing one religion’s institutions, whatever the arguments, and letting others run with full autonomy is definitely a problem

Merit based recruitment should be done for pandits or molvis with govt salary irrespective of Cast/ religion. Akash ! If protecting dalits was an issue, they should have taken mosques and churches under control too. Pasmanda Muslims aren't allowed in few mosques, only Ashraf Muslims can give sermons. Dalit converts to Christianity face discrimination, in few places they can't bury in the same graveyard as other upper class Christians. But they still don't take control of their religious institutions. Main reason you missed was, people like power and to control people that's why temples aren't free.

Temples were built by the kings and queens of the past, there are no religion heads who build them, they never had the money. Temples would still come under government but they should stop control and just be observer/overseer not just for temples but for other religions as well to stay secular. My ancestors built temples and have been dharmakartha but it they were part of the government to be able to do that feat. Same is the case of Bhadrachalam, Tanjaore. Temples were always funded by by government, but not controlled like how it is now. Administration should be left to locals to carry out the rituals and let them manage the money themselves.

The British brought temple control because most of the temples were rich in resources at that time. Gold, money, land etc, etc etc. We continued with a lot of archaic laws even after independence. All religious places should have blended systems such that government is just the administration of last resort.

Best option for the supreme court is to layout some conditions which should be adhered strictly by the independent temple boards, as well timely auditing of its funds by govt agencies. This will make sure that all hindus irrespective caste are allowed entry and the finance are transparent. There was a threat to all temples in India by the RSS organisation those are the sleeper cell of British East India Company. The only motive of RSS was to create division between Hindus itself based on their caste, Brahmin and Dalit etc. apart from the communal hatred. If temples are freed, the priestly community may gain a stronghold on the temples again. We don't want to be going down that road again. I think all religious institutions of all religions should come under government control, but should also have a certain degree of autonomy n freedom.
