I visit Kerala every summer due to my nature of work and as a Mumbaikar I found that Hindus, Muslims and Christians are living there in peace and harmony. Their only religion I found is education and hard work. When we asked Why he said "His mother died today morning". I was born a Muslim in Kollam in Kerala, although i have never been religious. I hate to say this but followers of Islam in Kerala have become so much more fanatic and conservative than we ever were. I remember how back when i was young(90s) how during onam we used to visit my father's friends and for Id we used to used to invite them over to our home and if they couldn't come over, we would take different non veg dishes to their homes. But my parents and siblings are not like that anymore. During conversations at home they even refer to Christians as "Nasranis" rather than by the their names of pronouns. My sister and mother started wearing burqa in 2017 and they wear it all the time. My father was open to my views of secularism until a few years back. Now he gets angry at me everytime i tell them about anything related to secularism or other religions. 4 years back when i told him I wanted to MTech, he didn't even let me join an NIT Durgapur and made me do my MTech at a Muslim management aided engineering college in Kollam(i think people can figure out which college) just because he didn't want me to go to north India and be influenced by Hindus(that was his reasoning, and I'm not kidding). Our relatives have become so much closer to us while some of our family friends from other religions are being pushed away from the family on purpose by my parents. This is the case in many of my friends' homes as well. When Popular front was banned in Kerala, everyone at home was distributed for a few days although we've always been LDF(communist) supporters since my grandfather's days. We don't buy stuff from non muslims shops even now(which not difficult because most shops in Kollam city are indeed run by muslims). This is the grim reality of many muslims in Kerala. I don't care what politicians and media of Kerala say about muslims of Kerala, but the truth is we have become extremely conservative, sectarian and manyfold religious than we ever were. I dislike this and i genuinely wish Kerala went back to what is was 20-30 years back. Even then there were religious fanatics here, but the difference is, they were not this influential and they were a small minority. But today they are highly influential both politically, and financially. One of the best examples being Yusuf Ali. Not a single malayali muslim would say a single bad word about his even when he openly constructs his malls on wetlands and even encroaches public land. Governments, politicians, religious groups and even judicial officials work with such people purely for financial gains. While common people close their eyes to such injustice purely for religious reasons. Kerala isn't god's own country anymore. It just isn't.. i wish sometimes that more muslims stopped being so conservative and spoke the truth. The Modi government and its hindutva is partly to blame for this, as they have given one more reason to muslims to come together and hold their faith closer to heart. While the communist government of Kerala is milking the moment by indirectly asking muslims to come together and stand with the LDF who claim to the saviours of secularism(which they aren't, they just want to win elections).

This was quite sad to read. First thing I want to point out is just because your family experience is that way, you cannot generalise the vast majority of Muslim malayalis having this extreme fear. And I'm happy you pointed out the tactics of the BJP because they are creating this division. Yes there is definitely increased fear but not every Muslim household manifests that the way your family is. Second since you mentioned you are not religious I hope you understand that alot of your parents behaviour is against Islam. So the solution would be to educate yourself and them as best as you can to show how our prophet lived amongst non-muslims. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- îaram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
