Internet learning has helped me greatly. There's something about getting multiple points of view, and being able to replay difficult parts over and over, plus I can fit it into my schedule. Also, it doesn't have to be linear, sometimes I jump from old style thinking to newer perspectives (especially in philosophy) and back again for better insights. As long as I avoid confirmation bias then the internet fosters an open mind. Thanks for the video and I hope you feel better. Edit: I feel this has helped me in relation to ego work (I have a strong ego) because it's helped me to diffuse my ego thru openmindedness. It's helped me in developing my weak persona by educating me on why things happen, and building compassion for others...we're all in the same boat.

This is absolute gold. I have a very weak ego and it continues to wreck me, is what I realized after a few videos of yours and especially this one. After all the various psychological theories I've learned about, this feels dead on point. I'm not entirely sure of how to build a strong ego, but I'm trying to get to know myself better as you suggested here. Thanks a lot.
@hotsauce06062 жыл бұрын
Same. I'm starting with affirmations and replacing my current unwillingness to commit to an ego with beliefs that serve me. Now, without the hesitancy of having an ego overall. I don't know if that makes sense, but previously I didn't want to make judgements about myself because I thought having an ego itself was a bad thing that caused overidentification with the self, but I can now see that it's hurting my ability to function and cope as a human altogether.

I am so used to people sayling the ego is something to get rid of. Treating the ego as a trouble maker. This explanation is more fair. Seeing the ego as needed and something to keep healthy is a nice change. It seems important to keep ego in check to avoid negative outcomes, but also to keep ego in good health. Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
@diogeneslantern182 жыл бұрын
People don't understand what they are talking about. It's the same as the concept of the "nice guy" - what it means as a defined archetype in psychoanalysis is quite different to what is meant in a day to day sense by society.

In active imagination my ego first presented itself as a very tall, narrow tower. A little later I went looking for the source of my pride, and it was at the top of the tower. I’m not 100% but I’m pretty sure my pride continues to build my ego taller and taller, and whenever anything does damage to it, the tower begins to crumble but pride hoists it back into place.

A very thorough and lucid explanation. I particularly liked the emphasis on the possibilities of developing or amending the ego in whatever direction is relevant, because ego-related problems often weigh people down and cause difficulties which are relatively easy to resolve compared to, say, persona-identification. I am now in my second half-century and the concept and goal of individuation has recently begun to affect me on a very profound, almost visceral level: it makes me so hopeful to see a young acolyte such as yourself help others explore the riches a Jungian approach can offer to those genuinely seeking a full and creative life.

I was just listening to you talk about how we can create and choose both negative and positive traits to be valued and relegated to the ego, and how you feel grateful that one of the traits you deemed valuable was being hard-working. it made me realize that from an extremely young age I have done the opposite, deciding that laziness, and specifically putting in little or no effort and still doing well (mostly academically but in other aspects as well) was an integral part of who I was. I think this may be a problem with other people who were constantly told how "gifted" and special they were from a young age, not in spite of never working for anything, but because of it. Regardless, valuing this trait has had major consequences for me as an adult. I'm not sure if it was said in this video or another, but you cautioned against defining one's self by something fleeting, such as youth or beauty, and sadly, I was not capable of remaining as slothful as I sought higher education and started being surrounded by people at a similar level of intelligence to myself but who were harder working; I was expected to actually put in effort if I wanted to even keep up, and not only was this incredibly alien to me (knowing how to study or take notes etc.), but it was genuinely terrifying to me *because* I had made this trait a major part of my identity. This trait felt absolutely necessary in order to maintain any semblance of self worth, so, I started to avoid situations which would challenge the idea that I was not, in fact, effortlessly special. If I knew I was going to do poorly on a test, I would simply not take the test and *choose* to get a 0; if I get an F, it's because I didn't bother trying, but if I take the test and do poorly, then I'll have a fucking identity crisis. Similarly, even if I knew I was relatively prepared for a test, if I felt like I'd get a B, I would rather not take it and choose to get an F for the same reason - I only get As or Fs because mediocrity is the most ego shattering thing to me. Losing the ability to fully identify with this trait has left me with an incredibly weak ego as it was my main source of value and identification. It's something I think parents should be really careful not to fuel - to instead value hard work, failed attempts, and "the process." Anyway my life isn't going great LOL, hopefully your videos can help save my shitty brain.

thank you for this clip. it cleared some of the confusion I felt that I had but didn't quite acknowledged. most of it stems for the various interpretations of points of view from which the ego is seen. the unreality of the ego as it is pointed out in various spiritual traditions, that stem from different religions has lead me to some warped beliefs, one of which being that "the ego is bad" somehow. I am still in the process of uprooting this belief and it strikes at the most inappropriate moments.

Thanks so much for the video and the channel. These have been a great supplement to my random attempts to read Jung. A few thoughts on this one: 1. It might be a bit strong to say the ego is an illusion. A person without one, after all, is an incomplete person. Rather, it seems it is more of a complex emergent system, like most things which can be deconstruct yet which have real world effects. But yes, it isn’t absolute nor unchangeable. 2. The statement that desires are self referential sparked a huge positive response in me. I was less certain of the idea that wants are self referential as these can include, as I see it at least, choices that are both intuitively, emotionally, and rationally consistent. Or would you use a different term than wants for such choices?

Interesting, how did you change after the drug? What did you use?
@mossmore98336 жыл бұрын
Spec. . I used Extacy which I suspect was laced with LSD. Never really know what Extacy will be laced with. I changed by no longer finding enjoyment in things that I enjoyed but also by not getting upset over things that use to upset me. I feel like I became a zombie. My thought process changed also, before I use to have scattered thoughts while thinking of many things. Now my mind only follows one train of thought but not multiple thoughts trying to compete with each other. I feel like I am more present in the momen but with less energy because I'm relaxed "like a zombie" in the present moment. I miss the more likely lively feeling that I use to have.
@ShadovvStorm6 жыл бұрын
Well that suspicion of lacing sure sounds scary I feel you man. But if you're more not so reactive and present in the moment and relaxed that sound good to me friend. I had a kind of a mental breakdown with drugs too but yeah not much energy outward now but I feel good no stress no problem. Although I do feel emotions stronger though. I trust in time more genuine energy will emerge from me. I recommend checking out Eckhart Tolle if you haven't already, sounds like you're getting where he's pointing at.

So much spot on stuff. You are awesome. I wish I had a grasp of this as well as you do. One thing blew my mind and my awareness of a concept; How are we “leaving part of our self behind” as a subconscious thought from childhood when our subconscious is where we store information in early childhood, as our brain is not developed enough to be able to cope with some experiences. Directly speaking, are you saying that our subconscious leaves things behind as insignificant compared to our conscious mind as a late teen or young adult? Or are you saying we actually don’t contemplate some of our subconscious thoughts but also don’t act out on those thoughts later in life? Im not sure if Im confused or I misunderstood what you said. You first said that you can't just make up your ego, you have to look into yourself and find out about your preferences and characteristics. But then you talked about choosing your own values. How much of your values can you rationally choose and how much can they be disconnected from your preferences? You gave the example of being hard working so let's say I recognise the value of hardworking but I also recognise in myself extreme laziness, lack of focus or discipline. Since I'm the latter, how much can the former actually be one of my values if I'm unable to practice it? And how do you align your characteristics that are in dissonance with your values? Thanks! PS: you have a compressor with a long attack on. Lower the attack or use a limiter instead

Hey Emerald. I really like your videos and that you're interested in jung and jungian psychology. Do you have any experience with active imagination and dream interpretation? Maybe you can make a video about jungian techniques - how to use them and in which context - what we can gain from them - pitfalls. As i Understand it, those techniques are helpful for ego development. Meditation is helping to letting go of ego. Thanks again :)
@auggied6760 Жыл бұрын
To say that someone with a weak ego really doesn't know who she is is true, but it is also true that someone with a strong ego also doesn't know who he is. The ego is not at all what we are, and this can be known once we move past it. I also question the role of memory in the operation and formation of the ego. There could be no ego without memory. The entire sense of self is predicated on memories, which are ideas of who we are and how we identify. Many of these memories may be subconscious or unconscious, but they still create the illusion of who we are. The most ironic thing that comes out of all of this is that the problem is the way the mind has been fragmented or compartmentalized, and at the same time Psychology feeds into this fragmentation by providing labels such as subconscious, the shadow, inner child, and so on. We are, in fact, whole beings and yet we have created fragmentation not only within our own selves but also in our sciences, religion, philosophies, etc.
