Hey Tom! Great review as always. Just wanted to point out that the books stack on top of each other on the scoreboard. It's actually pretty clever. lol

On a tangent the iOS version of Paperback is great, I play that solo all the time when I'm in the mood for a quick word game. :) Hopefully the same company that developed digital Paperback will be hired to make a digital version of Hardback, Hardback looks like a pretty decent word game in its own right.

Cool. I’m looking forward to the review for the Paperback expansion. Already have it preordered!

We didn't really cotton to Paperback. The problem was, too much analysis paralysis. For some of us it was hard to find words that worked very well and there was very little conversation other than complaining about how hard it was to come up with words (and harder for some of us than others). The changes for Hardback look like they would mitigate that problem, with the wilds and the ink tokens. So I sold off my copy of Paperback but might give Hardback a try. The basic concept of combining deck building with a word game I like in principle, maybe Hardback will hit the sweet spot...

That's the second time I have seen Tom say that there is not a lot of room inside Paperback. There is a ton of room inside. So much room that they included a foam block to hold up the cards. Presumably it was put there so that a future expansion could fit inside? But from a guy who loves throwing away useless inserts and stuff, you'd think he would have chucked the foam and stopped being bothered about the lack of room.

You can sleeve the cards and fit them in the box after removing the foam blocks. A thoughtful touch for a deck builder.

Jeremy Ginsburg and you know Tom isn't sleeving anything, so how is he running out of room?

Brandon Graham It’s true- removing a foam insert (in Paperback anyway) gives you plenty of room, but I could see how the library scoring track in this one might make things a bit more difficult. Also, I would have loved a box where the top went all the way to the bottom. That’s really my only complaint with Paperback. Just try to keep that instruction booklet looking pristine!

Yes, the expansion for Paperback does fit right inside of the box, still room for a few more expansions. I was trying to put the expansion and it's own box into the original box and I accidentally dumped the cards from Paperback on the floor... I still have to resort it all again.

I loved Paperback, and this looks like like something I'd love as well. I just wish I had someone who would play it against. No one in my gaming group has as much love for word games as I do.

If I use an ink to get a letter card, & then use a remover to get rid of that letter I drew, does the letter I drew go into my discard, back into the game's draw deck, or is it removed from the game?

Do you need any extra purchases for this? Big turnoff for Paperback was the need to purchase things beyond the core book. Doesn't look like it, but doesn't hurt to check

I like both and have both but feel like I should get rid of one. The hard thing is Paperback is easier to teach but harder to setup while Hardback is the reverse so it's tricky. Hardback might be a bit too hard to teach to the kind of casual gamer I want these kinds of word games for though. Paperback is an easy sale as "Scrabble but a card game!" while this is more like "Scrabble but it's Magic the Gathering" and requires stronger knowledge of common card game mechanics.

I really disliked paperback, but I feel like this would be a huge improvement over paperback just by the wild card rule alone. It also seems a little more gamer-y so I'd like it more, might have to get it!

I find that Paperback can run too long. Hardback’s playing to 60 means that it can play quicker.
@leshrac369
@leshrac369 7 жыл бұрын
Hardback actually lists alot longer potential playtime. I dont know if the 60 points actually makes it quicker (Paperback lists 45 Minutes. Hardback lists 45-90 minutes). Though because its points you could just trunacate the point total (granted you could also just reduce the number of scoring cards in paperback).
