My preference would be Sky Team and Daybreak. Both excellent cooperative experience that deserves to be played by more people. And the cardplay in Daybreak is one of the most fun thing you can do for any player who enjoys the feeling of chaining effects in games.

Nice discussion - thank you! I've been especially excited by the SdJ's this year. We've been charmed and delighted by Sky Team, while think Captain Flip is the more fitting nominee for SdJ. Even Darwin has been great fun. It's a good year for us!

Daybreak has probably the best cardplay in any game i've played over the past few years. The use of tags and the clever ways the cards play off it is outstanding; I play it digitally solo on the easiest mode during lunch time just because I dig the *feel* of it so much. Fantastic theme as well; some of the co-op stuff is a little bit of a miss for me personally but I'm suuuuuuuuper excited to see the card play mechanism get iterated upon.

Ticket Ride Legacy is definitely playable after the legacy. Last weekend we had an epic 4 player game. The family is really digging it post legacy which I was unsure if it would have legs

I think the push your luck aspect in Captain Flip is the Gunner tile. Having three gunners loses the game so that's your gamble.

I hope you're wrong about Spiel picking Guild of Merchant Explorers, not because I think GoME is bad, but because I think Daybreak is the game that most "advances" the hobby of tabletop gaming. By kind of rising up and challenging other designers to think more ecologically about the impact of the hobby, and offering a really fun, challenging, and fast cooperative experience. To me, it's the more "important" title of the nominees.

My wife loves TtR Europe. How does TtR Legacy play with 2 players?

In my opinion, the TtR Legacy board is way too large for two people. There wasn’t much competition, and we didn’t even touch a lot of the mechanisms. It would be much better at 4.

@milesstone7032 my impression is that since it is competitive, it would be best to have the same 4 players each play. Is that correct? Does it ruin the game if the players change? We don't have a regular gaming group, so we play when we can with whomever is available.

The Spiel jury considers a game eligible in the year that it was released in the German market specifically. Same thing happened with Raiders of the North Sea a few years back and probably a few others recently.

Here in Germany we received English copies about two years ago. But it is the German version that counts.

My guess is Captain Flip and Daybreak. Having said that I think Captain Flip would be a C tier SDJ game. Its pretty forgettable. The game that has now been snubbed by the SDJ is Wandering Towers. Its been a hit with both the game group and family. It would have been a solid B tier SDJ game.

I really hope GoME wins. I think it's an incredible game that far too many passed up due to its awful name and drab artwork. It's a GREAT game. It deserves the recognition, and the bump. TTR will be fine.

I will be utterly shocked if Ticket To Ride Legacy does not win. The original game won the Spiel 20 years ago, and the committee clearly adores Matt Leacock. I don’t think the award is based on game quality; once the finalists are chosen, it’s about other things.

@0:00 The phrase is "Welcome back", not "welcome out". "Out" does not make sense. Not sure where you might've picked that one up.

I agree it's a bit odd, but it's not completely nonsensical. It's certainly uncommon but I have heard the phrase "Welcome out", but it's more fitting for an outdoor venue, like a farmer greeting visitors: "Welcome out to our beautiful farm" (not so much a KZbin video); having said that, it's still a valid introduction.
