My personal preference is always shorter and lighter games, but this makes Pandemic almost identical to Forbidden Island. I guess if someone doesn’t have either game, it’s cool that they have different themes to choose from, but Forbidden Island is definitely prettier with nicer components.

This is like pandemic travel version. I can see my self packing this up in a back pack and play on vacation..
@IcyTicey4 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. I like these "express" versions because I can pack a bunch of small games into a Tupperware container and take them on vacation without the bulk or weight of full games (or damaging boxes). I picked up a copy of Hot Zone before going to visit my parents a few weeks ago and introduced them to Pandemic. We played, and lost, 3 games, so I don't know if it made a good impression on them. 😆 Not to say we would be going on a cruise again anytime in the foreseeable future, but I liked to pack small footprint games for passing time on at sea days.

My issue that has arisen (my partner and I have played 3 times) is that the player card deck runs out every time. I can’t see how either of the other scenarios would cause someone to lose. Curing a disease costs 4 cards, and then you have to draw 4 more. Two cures is 8 cards, and that’s likely not going to happen within the first few rounds so the deck is already diminishing. Then after 8 expended cards, we still have to get 4 more in line with one person’s hand. Are we missing something? Are we just dumb? Lol.
@nienke77134 жыл бұрын
If you already own pandemic, only get this if you really have a desire for a more concise/distilled/light version for whatever reason (table space, shelf space, portability, playtime, people you want to play with), and even then I'd argue the free official print-and-play of it you can get (combined with some components from the regular version) might be enough to satisfy that desire as well. If you own neither but want one of them, then consider the play time, and even then, consider first trying out the free print-and-play of this smaller version, if you like it fine and don't desire anything more, stick with the PnP or buy the game if you want nicer components, if you feel like you've been given a little taste of something good and want more, go for regular pandemic (not only because it gives a longer play time with a better game arc, but also because if you later want even more, you can get expansions for it, which currently isn't the case (yet) for hot zone). If you have a need for a pandemic Demo you can display (e.g. at a store or stand) then Hot Zones is probably ideal.

Question on the hierarchy of the games okay pandemic the longest and then 20 minutes on this version. P. Reign of Cthulhu, does that fit in between these two games time wise?
@S0nyb1ack4 жыл бұрын
In my experience the longest pandemic is Rising tide. It has more "epidemic" (they are called differently of course) cards, making hte setup the longest (since you have to shuffle so many tiny decks) and was in my opinion by far the fiddly-est pandemic I've ever played. Since you have to check for spilling and similar it made the turns go by slower (at least in my experience - I've played it around 5 or 6 times) and the map didn't help (I think it is much less clear thus again slowing down the game). Fall of Rome has some similar "issues" with the between turn upkeep taking a bit longer than in other versions, but less so than Rising tide (you still have to parse which way the barbarians are coming and trace it back instead of just looking where to add cubes like in regular pandemic) Normal Pandemic and Iberia are basically the same timewise. As you said Cthulthu is somewhere in between - the board is sligthly smaller and the difficulty is not changed by the amount of "epidemic" cards, but by removeing regular cards, so you always only have to make 4 piles to shuffle for setup. This one seems certainly shorter than Cthulthu.

@S0nyb1ack4 жыл бұрын
Have you tried Pandemic: Fall of Rome ? That version has a separate solo mode, which helps if you don't really want to play multiple hands of cards. The changes in that mode makes it so that, despite playing 3 roles you only have one single hand of cards (but as I said still 3 roles) :)

GARBAGE GAME! The first thing I thought of when I saw this was those city versions of Ticket to Ride, WHICH I HATE. I understand the need to make versions of these that go a little faster. I especially understand that for Ticket to Ride, which can sometimes drag. But Pandemic never drags and it never takes an hour. Getting rid of the actions that make this a puzzle and replacing them with luck is NOT the way to make this shorter. It's a way to make it boring. I like the idea of introducing people to Pandemic via Cthulhu, which last 45 minutes, AT MOST. The luck there is still tolerable, but it does a much better job of removing some of the puzzly nature of the game without turning it into slightly-puzzly version of Go Fish!
